Crime is a major social and legal problem in the world, we live in and
population is one of the important factors, influencing incidence of crime. A
positive association between the growth in incidence of crime and the
population of the country has been experiential.

One of the most popular and often-occurring form of crime in the world is
cyber-crime which can be easily defined as the exploitation of computer
networks, systems, and technology-dependent enterprises intentionally. The
bane of the internet means a cause of great distress or annoyance to the
internet, cyber-crime refers to any and all illegal activities carried out using
technology. Cyber-crime is criminal activity that either targets or uses a
computer, a computer network or a networked device. Cyber-crime is carried
out by individuals or by any organizations.

A generalized definition of cyber-crime may be “unlawful acts wherein


computer is either a tool or a target or both.” Cyber-criminal, he can be anyone
means a motivated criminal or an organized hacker or a cyber terroroist, in short
he is a person who commits an illegal act with a guilty or wrong intention or
commits a crime in context to cyber-crime. Cyber-crime includes everything
from non-delivery of goods or services and computer intrusions (hacking) to
intellectual property rights abuses, online extortion, international money
laundering, identity theft, etc...

Cyber-crime can also be defined as the issues that are related to utilization of
communications technology, concretely “Cyber-Space”, that is, the Internet.
Cyber-crime is that offence where the victim and offender have not ever been
contacted to eachother and may never come into direct contact. Cyber-criminals
can commence cyber crimes from any country where there are weak cyber-
crime laws in order to reduce the chances of detection and prosecution.

A report by McConnell International (2000), a global technology policy and


management-consulting firm, defines cyber-crime as “harmful acts committed
from or against a computer or network.” Cyber or Computer crimes are white-
collar crimes and are committed by students, non-professional computer
programmers, business rivals, individuals having vested interest and criminals.

Victims of Cyber-crimes: -

1) Cyber- crimes against Persons or Corporate Houses are certain offences which
affects the personality of individuals like cyber stalking, defamation, fraud,
etc...,

2) Cyber-crimes against Person’s Property are certain offences which affects


persons property like hacking, trespass, money laundering, etc...,

3) Cyber-crimes against Government are certain offences like cyber terrorism,


extortion, shut down of essential services, etc..., are done by group of persons
intending to threaten the international governments by using internet facilities.

Unauthorized access; E-mail bonding; Data leaking; Data spying; Spamming;


Credit card fraud; Password sniffers; Fake auctions; Lotteries; Untrustworthy
websites, are some of the types of Cyber-Crimes.

We have gone through the analytical approach for this research paper and
various research papers on cyber-crime from ResearchGate, Legal Service India,
The Hindu, IRJET, and more have been analysed.
