What is the first step?
The most exciting moment arrives. We begin to receive
all the selected boards in stock. Our eyes are like those
of a child when he gets up on Christmas day and has to
unpack his presents. All the boards are then organised
and classified, and the grid is formed with the parame-
ters that will build, together with the general impres-
sion, the final report. The boards are all checked and
the measurements declared by the company compared
with appropriate equipment. Then the test sequen-
ce of the boards is prepared for each tester: for each
of the tests, each tester will always mount the same
binding, so as to get a result based on common basic
parameters. The boards are pre-mounted for the first
round of tests in the warehouse with the parameters of
the first tester that will test them. Important note: the
boards are not waxed or modified in any way because
our intention is to give feedback on the exact product
the company sends to the stores and which will con-
sequently end up in the hands of the final consumer.
14
How do we do the tests?
The group of testers consists of about 20 buyers from as
many European shops, some coaches, us from the Se-
quence staff, a photographer and a filmer. We set off for
the designated location, and for the second consecutive
year we chose BreuilCervinia. The test obviously takes pla-
ce over several days which are organized in this way: wake
up at dawn so as to be in front of the lifts in time for the first
chair. We build up the booths and we prepare the boards,
set up a computer for data entry at the end of the test and
a recorder to collect global impressions. The Sequence
staff at the booth, with the test sequence, prepares the bo-
ards for the next round and waits for each tester to collect
their feedback. This operation is repeated until the lifts are
closed for all the test days. The last day, at the end of the
test, there is a meeting where the data is double checked
and each tester is interviewed to confirm and / or imple-
ment their own judgments on the individual products.

What do we do
with the collected data?
Tired but happy we return to the editorial office, as
all the data are collected, processed and compared
with those provided by the companies. A copywriter,
together with the members of Sequence staff who
conducted the tests, compiles the texts of the review:
this is perhaps one of the most difficult tasks because
in just over 1500 characters the opinions and an im-
pressive amount of data must be summarized. Once
drafted, each individual review is checked and shared
with the testers. At this point every products is sent to
the photo studio, where it is shot in every single detail
by our photographers.
What do we do
about all those boards?
Once the tests are completed, all the gear is returned to
the companies and the final report is shared with them
without possibility of modification. We believe that an
honest and balanced report, the result of the opinions
of experienced and reliable testers, as well as with very
different styles and skills, can be a valid tool for evalua-
ting the product from the consumer’s point of view. In
a short time the Sequence Snowboard Guide is going
to be printed out and then it’s your turn to open your
copy of the guide, read and learn from this long but
precious job.

We have reached such a level that pro gear is truly the best

and boots that do their dirty work in a glorious way on all
terrains. What kind of rider are you? Most of those you see
in the resorts are all mountain snowboarders with various
drifts: park, powder, carving. There are excellent all moun-
tain compromises with all three disciplines mentioned
above. To tell the truth, most of the boards on the market
today are excellent for curves and then, depending on the
discipline, they are more or less stable in speed and fast in
the edge change. However, there are also riders who get
up, go to the park and stay as long as their legs hold up,
just as there are freeriders who use the track only to move
from one off-piste to another. You have to be honest and

Flex.
The rigidity of the board is one of the most important
characteristics to consider. Generally more rigid flexes are
chosen by those who love high speeds and don't want to Flex
give up cornering and carving stability, or like riding in
powder. With a softer flex you will have more playfulness,
which makes running low-speed flat tricks much easier. If
what interests you is the park and the freestyle and prefer
medium-sized featuers, rails and kickers, it will probably be
better for you a softer board. If, on the other hand, we
are talking about XL-sized kickers, then the situation chan-
ges: a more rigid board will allow greater precision in the

output. But not all flexes are the same. The most common
is the twin flex. It means that both the nose and the tail
have the same level of rigidity. If the switch is something
always present in your riding style, this is probably the type
of flex that's right for you.
Width
In the directional flex, however, the nose will have less rigi-
dity than the tail. This technology allows for greater flota-
tion in fresh snow thanks to the bending of the front part of
the board, while the stiffer tail guarantees a more powerful
pop. There is one last type of flex which is torsional flex. It
is basic what you can feel in the midst of the bindings by
raising the tip of our boot. A board with greater torsional
flex will be faster in edge-to-edge change during a turn
and the response will be much more direct and precise. A
softer flex will make you fall and crash less, but at the cost
of a board with less accuracy.
Camber
Width.
The standard width of the boards does not exceed 25 cen-
timeters at the central point. If your boot number exceeds
US11 you will probably have to consider buying a wide
board. As a general rule, if you look at the board from the
top, once you have positioned and centered the boot cor-
rectly, the toe and heel should not exceed the edges of the
board. The cons is, during a turn with a high inclination,
that your face is projected directly into the snow.
But the board width also influences the riding. The gre-
ater distance between the edges means that the change
of edge while turning is slower. The advantage is that the
larger surface will float better in fresh snow.

thout too much effort, but thanks to the four contact points, two of
which are at the height of the bindings and the other two on the nose
and tail, the entry and exit from the curves is extremely precise and
despite the shape is rather generous, the change of edge is fast and
not difficult at all. It can face high speeds on groomers thanks to the
nice wide sidecut, it lets itself be led in wide and harmonious curves
without any difficulties. The Camber System is calibrated in a balanced
way, making the board reactive without excess. In short, the Crosscut
is a beautiful all mountain freeride board, with flawless aesthetics and Waist

Goliath
Goliath embodies the very spirit of Bataleon and has been in their
catalog since the first seasons. An all mountain freestyle based on 3BT,
once you understand it you will never leave it.
As we have already repeated many times over the years when a Bata-
leon came into our hands, understanding 3BT is not absolutely diffi-
cult, but it is necessary to reset all the concepts related to riding lear-
ned on boards with a classic profile. Ironically, we have seen beginners
immediately feel comfortable with a 3BT and long-time riders struggle Setback
to adapt. Having overcome this necessary preamble, let's move on 0 cm
to the analysis of the veteran of the Dutch company: the Goliath is
a beautiful all mountain freestyle, suitable for slopes, powder and
park transitions. The 3BT freestyle with medium uplift on nose and tail
starting from the end of the binding can be unsettling at first, when
throwing yourself on the edge will not automatically find the contact
points and you will feel like sliding: but simply by learning to perform
this movement in a more progressive way and with a little patience,
you will understand how much the 3BT actually works. By mimicking
the shape of the bottom of a boat or a surf, this shape allows you to
enter turns more naturally, resulting in smoother curves and ultimately
gaining control. The Goliath has a medium camber that is felt just
enough, especially when needed, and working together with the 3BT
and with the Supertubes carbon inserts, it results in a lively but per- Waist
fectly balanced riding experience. 25,2 cm
WE LIKE All mountain freestyle top, it makes the most of the

Marauder
Inspired by nature. Designed to provide fluidity. Take it for a ride off
piste you won't regret it.
Constantly looking for powder, a fish that can be manoeuvred with
a load-bearing spatula with a large surface and a short, lively and
characterful tail. The Marauder is well balanced and adapts well to
different terrains. The bold and elegant design is particularly suited
for medium curves. The nose makes its way into every corner with
power and then, with a swipe of the tail, pushes you out. The “Blizzard Setback
Camber" combines a long rocker section in the nose, with a set-back 3 cm
camber between the feet to offer float and strength hard to find in
a 154cm board. But if aesthetics are its first business card and half
of the pleasure is received with the eyes, it’s the technical features
which amazed us: what it lacks in length makes it up for in volume.
The Marauder is made of poplar and paulownia wood, reinforced with
bamboo crosspieces and is held together by ultra-resistant "Green-
poxy" ecological resin. Good features for both your performance and
Mother Nature. It also does well on hard morning slopes and does not
even get embarrassed in the park. Maybe it's not the "fish out of wa-
ter" it seemed, after all. Take it for a spin off the piste and you won't
regret it: backcountry, scary vertical lines, steep couloirs, everything…

Custom
The Custom has been one of the most celebrated all mountain boards
in snowboarding history and its saga continues, improving year after
year and remaining at the top of the wish list of pros and mere mortals.
It was 1996 when the Custom timidly made its debut in the Burton
lineup. Since then, no other board has gained the same status, actual-
ly climbing the rankings to become a real symbol for the Burlington
company and for snowboarding in general. Now, what could we add
to what has already been said so far? We could say that few boards Setback
like the Custom work really well on all terrains. The Camber version we

tested is perfect for aggressive track cruising thanks to its medium flex
that keeps the board stable and in edge even at high speeds without
ever being too arrogant or reactive; it performs excellently on transi-
tions, where the directional shape does not create any problems even
in fast easy landings and the camber pumps in a balanced way on ta-
keoffs and excellently cushions landings, thanks also to the generous
surface. In powder it is agile, fast, stable and floats like a dedicated di-
rectional board. It is not a model that boasts space age technologies,
yet no other brand has managed to replicate such a perfect balance
of all features, which makes the Custom a Do It All board with capital
letters. The icing on the cake, the Custom is also quite easy to un-
derstand and therefore suitable for a non-evolved audience, although
absolute beginners would be better off with the softer Flying V ver- Waist

Spring Break

It looks like a park board, but guess what? It retains many of the
geometric theories that have made the Spring Break legendary in the

Nope, your eyes don't lie: the Capita Spring Break Powder Twin is a

radius and Surf Rocker camber profile, all combined in a perfect shape
for your powder stunts. The Surf Rocker Twin Profile features a con-

of today’s best surfboards. The gentle low angle allows for maximum 1 cm
float and control. The Dual Blaster Ashpop Core features internal po-
plar strips fused with a more dense and powerful ash wood through
the insert area and along the rails. It gives you a stable and predictable
feeling underfoot, with all the pop and reliability you could ask for.
Coming from solidified volcanic lava, basalt is an abundant resource
known for its thermal properties, strength and durability, this natural
material will pump your performance. The Holysheet fiberglass con-
figuration features fiber weaves that provide tensile strength so you
can have a stronger and more responsive board without adding extra
weight while providing maximum strength and durability. The Magic

allows for a smooth edge change. The bamboo core and the carbon
structure with triaxial glass fiber guarantee lightweight and speed.
The introduction of new types of wood, carbon and anti-vibration

EMB
The right board for all those riders who want to explore every corner
of the mountain and get noticed. Because style is the only thing that
matters.
Why choose? With the DC EMB you can have both power and control
in a single board, thanks to the Lock & Load camber profile and the
new Reactive Core. Are you always in search of the perfect powder
line? If you are looking for a reactive board with lots of stability both
on piste and in the park, then the DC EMB is perfect for you. You can
bet on the confidence of a precise and reliable riding, as much as on
switch riding control. The shape of the nose and tail is symmetrical
and as the board features setback the nose looks a little longer than
the tail. The DC's skate-inspired Lock & Load Camber profile offers
a stable riding, but it's also playful and forgiving, more than just a
standard camber profile. It features a traditional camber between the
bindings and a flat camber towards nose and tail. The dynamic and
light flex underfoot makes this board peppy, allowing you to keep
control all the time. In addition to a great edge hold, the 156 performs
well in the park and freestyle. The Reactive Core is made from a light
poplar that is spread over the entire length and combines flexibility
underfoot with shock absorption. The beechwood along the edges
means quality and long life. The Sintered Supreme Base is fast but
requires careful maintenance. Waist

Battle Rusty
Peppino Stewart, Drake rider and founder of the Rusty Toothbrush
crew wanted to pay homage to the "Toothbrushes" by offering an
interesting hybrid board that reflects the crew's DNA.
When it was presented at ISPO 2020 we were quite incredulous: we
had never heard of a board that would put the backcountry and street
worlds in agreement. But Alex “Peppino” Stewart has a fair amount
of experience on both terrains and so he achieved it. At a quick first
glance this Battle looks in all respects a classic freeride/all mountain
directional with a decisive setback. Once under your feet, you can
Setback
sense the intimate nature of the board: powder and groomers. The 10 cm
center of the board is wide and can be maneuvered well even on
beaten snow. Drake and the good ol’ Alex have thought to combine
this generous shape with a camber with rocker tips and a medium flex,
so as to make the experience on groomers and in the park definitely
fun. While remaining a shape born to float, the permissiveness given
by the camber and the medium flex make it quite playful even on tran-
sitions, where it is stable and much more agile than you might expect.
In conclusion it's a nice one-board-quiver if you have an all mountain/
freeride DNA but also like to tackle the park for a few runs, especially
on transitions. Suitable for a more freestyle use to medium-tall riders
and with fairly long feet, small physique people would struggle to ma-
neuver it easily due to the generous width but could always enjoy it in Waist
the backcountry where it is universally very fun.

Radical
Versatile and aggressive, the Radical goes from XL park lines to

There are those who prefer the park and there are those who love to
go fast on groomers. Then there are those who want everything, in
two words: this Funky. The name of this board, top seller of the past
seasons and favorite model of the Funky team, describes its vocation
quite comprehensively: Radical. An agile, aggressive, fast and precise
all mountain board, it is perfect both for groomers days in ringing Setback
curves and for facing generous dimensions jumps. Thanks to the RCR 0
camber with rocker tips, it finds its comfort zone even in powder whe-

control, it ensures directional stability and makes driving child's play.
The fun mood will always be set to on, regardless of external condi-

for the type of board. It gives emotions, curve after curve. It is a de-
cidedly technical vehicle, so it is not made for everyone, but at the
feet of advanced riders it unleashes all its potential. The perfect travel
companion, inseparable anywhere you are. Light riders or riders with
untrained legs may struggle to savor its pop and responsiveness, but

Money
The Money is perhaps one of the most intuitive and fun boards in the
Gnu lineup. Soft but also performing, the Money is a real park board
with something more.
We already know from experience that no matter how playful and
predictable its creations may be, Mervin has always wanted to make
its boards as all mountain as possible, and by all mountain we mean
usable on multiple terrains: that’s what the Money is made for. From
the first turns you can sense the freestyle soul of this twin with square Setback
nose and tail, with a pleasant medium flex but which retains a nice 0
snap for power ollie and load tricks on transitions. The proprietary C2e
camber, which sees rocker in the middle and elliptical camber up to
the nose and tail, makes this board great for butter on groomers, but
thanks to the Magne Traction the edge grip is precise and worthy of
much stiffer boards than the Money. The C2e camber is so well balan-
ced that even an unexperienced rider will be at ease with it, and than-
ks to the raised anti-blade tips dirty landings will not be a problem. On
the other hand, there is no feeling of lack of support, which makes the
Money more docile than a flat camber, but still responsive as if it were
a camber. The jib lines are probably its natural terrain, but even on not
particularly large transitions it defends itself well and indeed turns out
to be really fun, unleashing a grit and a pop that you wouldn't normal-
ly think. Basically, the Money is a beautiful park board, but thanks to Waist
the effective Mervin technologies it can accompany you around the 25,3 cm
slopes and in some occasional powder outings, if not too demanding.
WE LIKE Super nice park board with very effective edge hold, soft
flex and lively pop: an excellent freestyle compromise.

are minimal but elegant, in pure Jones style. It is a pleasure under the 2,0
feet, especially on the track: the shape is agile and the edge change
is fast and precise, entering and exiting curves in a progressive way
and in general it is not at all rude. Even in the park it has its say, with
a nice reactive pop and a dynamism that make it an excellent tool
for transitions. A small note, which is not meant to be a criticism but
a clarification: when Jones tells you about a board that is "playful",
always consider that it is Jeremy's own point of view. This means it is
not universally considered a playful board, but it is definitely playful by
the Jones standard. This does not mean that it is a difficult board, far
from it, but the Stratos is still a technical board, albeit quite intuitive.
In essence, we are facing (indeed above) yet another successful tool
in Jones's line, who wanted to create a board for track riders with the
vice of transition and succeeded excellently, while maintaining a 100% Waist
Jones DNA. 25,6 cm
WE LIKE Fast, precise, not demanding but still technical, excellent for
slopes and medium-large transitions.

Orca
Once upon a time Travis Rice wanted a board easy to use on days
when he woke up without knowing if he wanted to jump into powder or
face a couple of turns on groomers…
Then came the Orca. Of course we're kidding, but Travis's intention
together with the Mervin crew may not have been so far from our
fictional version. In fact, the Orca is an all mountain board with a free-
ride soul, otherwise TRice would never have put his signature on it. Its
original directional shape is very pleasing to the eye, as are the graphi- Setback
cs that recall the homonymous marine mammal. As far as performance 0
is concerned, the C2X camber with its minimal rocker in the center
which extends to the tips with two positive camber zones, keeps the
board not too stiff but still stable even at high speeds. Handling is
guaranteed by the Magne Traction, which ensures effective edge
hold in all types of snow, even in areas with mixed soft/ice terrain. It
should be emphasized that despite the rather generous shape, with
an abundant center, on the beaten track it is agile and the speed of
edge change is absolutely not affected. Once brought to soft terrains,
however, it really unleashes its full potential, revealing a truly unique
agility, ease of maneuver and buoyancy: this board is an excellent can-
didate to become a one board quiver for riders who love to turn fast
on groomers when there’s no new snow, but as soon it increases, they
can’t wait to throw themselves off the piste and trace every corner of Waist
the backcountry. 26,7 cm
WE LIKE A high level all mountain freeride board, but not prohibitive
or difficult. On groomers it feels great, but it is in powder that it makes
the difference.

Proto Synthesis
A quite unique mix of firm pop, edge hold and agility for an all-round
all mountain freestyle.
Proto Synthesis redefines the concept of possible, offering high-level
performance combined with control and stability, even in technical
conditions. What is surprising about the new Proto Synthesis of the
American brand Never Summer is the absolute balance of the featu-
res. The Denver company's Shockwave rocker camber is perhaps one
of the most effective hybrid ones on the market, managing to perfect- Setback
ly balance a medium flex with nice responsive pop and amazing ease 0
of maneuver. At first glance it might seem like a simply intuitive board,
but as you put it under the pressure you realize that there is much
more underneath. It offers a responsive riding feel, giving the rider
control in multiple situations. On the transitions it is soft, stable and
precise, but at the same time it can forgive small errors in handling
and landing. The handling, thanks to the Vario Power Grip Sidecut,
is precise and the edge grip is effective on all terrains. Like all Never
Summer boards, it's a massive and not exactly lightweight board, but
the craftsmanship is very high standard and it's really a pleasure to
ride it. Never Summer boards are known as unbreakable and include
a 3 year warranty. Mountains are calling.

Sensor Plus
Last year we tested the standard version for the first time and it really
surprised us with the level of confidence it could give to riders of all
levels, together with the amazing performance.
And this new Sensor + only confirms our impressions of last season,
indeed with some points of further improvement. It is truly amazing
how this board inspires so much confidence and is so intuitive that
it seems you had it under your feet forever. Sometimes it happens
that such intuitive boards do not give special performances once the Setback
enthusiasm of the first rides is overcome: this is not true for the Sen- NA
sor. Defined as a multipurpose freestyle board, it is a real all-round
board with which to tackle kickers, jibs, slopes and even some curves
in powder. The pop is strong and not at all arrogant, the shape is
well calibrated with an outline that gives excellent maneuverability
and a fast edge change. The positive Camber makes it responsive
and snappy both on transitions and on track. Ultimately, the Sensor is
a pedigreed freestyle board, great if you want a "do it all" board that
does well on all terrains, especially the beaten ones. Its kingdom is
the park but on the track it guarantees exceptional edge hold and the
cornering experience is truly exhilarating. If its younger sister Sensor,
which we tested last year, was already much more than a butter board
with freestyle ambitions, this Plus version is nasty and is excellent for
even large structures and curves on the mach 3 track. Waist

Team
For over 10 years synonymous with all mountain performance, the
Team is reconfirmed as one of the favorite boards of the Nitro Team
and many more riders.
The Team needs no introduction: it speaks for itself. Ten years of de-
velopment, implementation of techs and tests have made the Team
a legend and one of the best performing all mountain board on the
market. Ultra appreciated by the entire Nitro Team for its multifaceted
nature, the Team in the camber version we tested is precise, fast in Setback
edge changes and absolutely stable, both in conduction and in take- -15
offs and landings. With the Team you can have a terrific day wherever
you are, on any terrain. Be inspired by the mountains, you will not
regret it. Suitable for those who want a unique board that tackles any
terrains, it is quite challenging for beginners. It is recommended for
riders who already feel confident enough and who will appreciate the
mix of agility and reactivity, which is always balanced. In fact, this bo-
ard doesn’t have any wrong features: despite being a fairly technical
board, you will never have the feeling of having to force your legs to
get a certain type of riding. Every aspect is well balanced in this board
to guarantee performance on all terrains, especially the beaten ones.
Bold at the right point, determined with style.

Twin Pig
The Pig series has given birth to a new genre of boards and although
many other brands have successfully ventured into the segment in
recent seasons, the Pig still remains the absolute best.
Fun Board? If we’re talking about other boards with a “modified”
volume this definition may work because they’re models with a vast
spectrum of use who know how to entertain without, in fact, excel-
ling in anything. But this definition does not apply to the Pig series,
which in its many changes has always maintained incredible levels of Setback
performance. Since the first test we did years ago with the progenitor 0
Warpig, the testers have always been amazed at how such a short and
stubby board would ride so well. This year we chose to try the free-
style variant of the Pigs family and our opinion has not change. Here
we are not talking about a fun board, but a freestyle one capable of
tackling groomers, park and even a bit of backcountry always with its
head held high. Confidence, pop, but above all surprising agility for a
board that is all in all quite wide in the center. The Pig is an excellent
all mountain freestyle that can make you have fun on side hits as well
as on generously sized jumps, always keeping that freshness that will
only make you fall in love with it. Negative aspects? Not easy to find
them: let's say that if you are a purist of narrow boards with a thin
waist, you might find the Pig slightly slow in edge change, but there’s
no much more that that. In the end, it is a great board that can be your Waist
quiver if your snow day includes a little bit of everything. 31,4 cm
WE LIKE Fun, performing, agile, multipurpose: the Twinpig is a one-
board quiver for all mountain freestyle riders who are not looking for
extreme performances or who don’t compete in the slope style of
the X-Games.

National
What hasn't already been said about the National? If we were to
define all mountain with the name of a board, surely the National
would be a top choice.
Sometimes people defined as all mountain rather anonymous boards
that are stiff enough to hold the edge smoothly and not too nervous
to maintain a docile behaviour, ideal for those who spend a good part
of their time on groomers. In truth, however, a true all mountain is a re-
ally difficult board to make because it has to perform convincingly on Setback
all terrains, i.e. powder, groomers and park. The National is a hell of all NA
mountain, because, as witnessed by the many pros who have adopted
it over the years, it is wide enough to float, nervous enough to pump
up transitions, stiff enough to hold the edge at high speed. And in all
this, it is not even too demanding for less experienced riders, who will
indeed find it quite welcoming and stable: however, it is far from being
definable as a beginner's board. The fusion camber with rocker tips
gives a hand to the less experienced ones in case of not exactly clean
handling and landings, but at the same time helps to keep nose and
tail out of the snow in case of powder. In conclusion, we are in front
of a beautiful and solid all mountain model, excellent as a one board
quiver for riders with medium-high skills, but which can accompany
even the less experienced in their progression. Bjorn Leines has been
used and abused it for years, so if that's okay with him, it should be Waist
okay with you too, don't you think? 25,6 cm

significantly helps riding, just as happens on a motorcycle, the inclination that the base-

The new Barryvox S has a wide and simple interface and intuitive operation system, im-

even more effective by the Smart Search function.
This digital/analog device with three antennas has a large digital search strip of 70m
and 80m analog and a wide and reliable reception band, 70m digital and 95m analog.
In the field, the Barryvox S proved powerful, easy and quick to use. The display is also
visible with polarized glasses and the buttons can also be used with gloves. The shell is
waterproof and shock resistant and the interface features a revolutionary graphics. All
these features demonstrate Mammut's commitment to technological innovations, made
possible also thanks to the experience guaranteed by 45 years of development and de-
sign in Switzerland. A really powerful tool: the wide circular reception bands ensure that
the signal transmitted by the buried ones is detected faster: the wider the search strip,
the shorter the route on the terrain and therefore buried people will be found faster.
The marking function improves management in the case of complex scenarios where,
thanks to the possibility of scrolling between the various signals, the rescuer can search
for each buried person individually so as to significantly halve the timing. All the signals
of the devices of the buried subjects are gradually stored in a list and the rescuer can
see every single data (distance and direction) so as to facilitate the multiple research.
WE LIKE Easily readable display even with polarized glasses. It can also be used when
wearing gloves. Impact resistance, waterproof, simple use interface.
