The Great Gatsby is one of the prominent writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald which shows us
a picture of American society after World War 1. The Great Gatsby tells us about the Panoramic
vision of the American dream. The Great Gatsby was written in 1924 in Paris and US and was
published in 1925. The societal characteristics of this novel include more freedom and more
disposable income. It discusses the haves and have-nots of society. There are four main things in
The Great Gatsby. The first theme is The class which discusses the new money vs old money,
the Midwest versus the east. The second theme is the superficiality versus truth for example
many of the characters in the novel display double roles. The third theme is about The American
Dream. It discusses about what people want to do in order to get it and the last theme is the
.degradation of society. There are multiple themes and layered symbolism in this novel

This novel is a great piece of social commentary. Actually, Fritzgerald is a keen observer
and presents a harsh picture of the world which he observes around him. It explains how the
American Dream fails in eliminating the social discrimination. The divisions of classes in the
.society cannot be overcome

Jay Gatsby was the son of farmers, born in North Dakota. Gatsby is a young man, around
thirty years old. Jay Gatsby is a tragic hero as he possesses all the necessary characteristics of
modern tragic hero. He possesses the characteristics of a tragic flaw and ultimately he has a
tragic fall. Gatsby is a common man as he was not born in rich family or did not had any special
background. His parents are described as "shiftless and unsuccessful farm people “which means
that he was from humble roots just like anyone else. He has a rages to riches story in the novel
which makes him an embodiment. Being a son of unsuccessful farmer, he started his life from
nothing to little. Gatsby did not have old money as his money did not come from the inheritance.
He gains a great profit by selling liquor. He was ambitious and wanted to be successful. He
.learned the manners of wealthy people
The character of Jay Gatsby is an indicator of social mobility. He was rising and falling
in success as he wanted to win the heart of woman who was undeserving of his love. Gatsby’s
inability to tell the truth and his determination to recreate the past leads to Daisy’s rejection.
Gatsby throws lavish parties every Saturday night yet no one knows where it comes from and
how he made his this much successful destiny. He was involved in criminal activity as he
.wanted to do anything to build his social position
Gatsby likes to stay quiet even in the wild parties hosted by him. He loves to move arround
weathy and high-profile people. He depends on himself as much as possible. His character is
actually of a dreamer, who forecasts a good future for himself and foucses on all the possible
