PHYS 111 F21 Week 10 TOPIC:

TORQUE
WORKSHEET #1
TORQUE AND MASSIVE PULLEYS:
1. Hinged Door:
a. Draw a top-view of a door attached to a hinge on the left side. Show where and in what direction to apply the force to
maximize the torque. Show the force with an arrow and label it as 𝐹𝜏max .
b. If the force was applied to the end of the door furthest from the hinge, how could the torque be zero? Show it on your
diagram and label it as 𝐹𝜏0 .

2. Massive Pulley:
a. Draw a massive pulley (solid disk) of radius 𝑅 with a string tightly wrapped around it many times. It can rotate around
the axis which is fixed to an unseen support.
b. What is the angle between 𝑅 and the tension 𝑇 of the string?
c. Write an expression for the torque created by the tension in the string.
d. If the string is pulled with a constant tension 𝑇, what is the magnitude of linear speed of the string wrapped around the
pulley? What about the angular speed of the pulley in terms of 𝑣?
e. If the pulley wheel is accelerating with angular acceleration 𝛼, what will be the magnitude of the linear acceleration at
every point on the pulley wheel circumference? What about the linear acceleration of the string after it leaves the
pulley?
f. If 𝑇 is 4 N and 𝑅 is 0.2 m, and 𝑀 is 5 kg for the pulley, calculate the moment of inertia, the torque on the wheel and its
angular acceleration.
