Name and purpose of this period of experience

During this period,


I performed stability analysis of steel structures, reinforced concrete structures and timber structures.
I also designed water, sewer, wastewater, storm water and road infrastructure for township development in Cape-
town and Port Elizabeth.

Nature of problem addressed in this period; method of analysis, developing solutions and evaluation, decisions
and judgement

To determine the right sections to use for the stability of the structures based on results of structural analysis
To determine the right size and class of pipe for water, wastewater and storm water conveyance.
To determine the pavement materials and thickness required to carry the structural traffic for 20 years.

I used PROKON for the structural analysis of the timber and steel structures.
I used STRAP for the finite element structural analysis of the reinforced concrete structure.
I used TECHNOCARD for the hydraulic analysis and design.
I used TECHNOCARD for the geometric design of the road sections.
I designed the pavement sections in accordance with the South Africa Technical Manual for the Design of
Highways.

Documentation, report, presentations, prepared

I prepared the predesign report as well as the project plans and specifications for the projects listed below:
Symphony Way
Upgrade of Teselaarsdal Road for Provincial Government of Cape-town
Kwanobhule Phase A and B.
Malabar Township Development
Delph Township Development.
I also prepared report for 60-bridge inspections for South Africa National Roads.

Management of materials, machines, manpower, methods or money, contracts

I prepared a project schedule before the commencement of the design, these included the resources needed to
complete the design of the projects.
I updated the schedule when it was obvious to change the schedule due to unforeseen events.
I assisted in the management of the contract onsite by approving shop drawings.

Interactions with clients, stakeholders and other disciplines

I attended regularly scheduled meetings with major stakeholders.


I prepared and circulated meeting minutes to all stake-holders.
I gave presentations in neighbourhood meetings to inform stakeholders of the project implementation plans
strategies to minimize its negative impact.

Health and safety considerations; hazards and environmental considerations, other legislation

I worked with the environmental consultant to prepare the environmental impact report.
I provided the project description to the environmental consultant
I provided a copy of the pre-design report, project plans and specifications to the environmental consultant.

What outcomes or levels were you working towards demonstration

I was working towards demonstrating competencies in the design of infrastructures for township development.
I was also working towards demonstrating competencies in writing project specifications
I was working towards demonstration competencies in structural analysis and design.

Applicant’s contribution to the work


I designed the infrastructures which included roads, water, sewer and storm water services in conformance with
the South Africa Technical Recommendations for Highway 4,8,16 and 17.

I also worked with engineering technicians to prepare the project plans.


I also prepared project predesign report and contract documents.
I prepared the engineer’s estimate for the projects
I wrote the pre-design reports for the projects
I prepared the bridge report in accordance with the provisions of TMH 7, Part 1 and 2, Code of Practice for the
Design of Highways, Bridges and Culverts in South Africa.
