 Cyclone is derived from Greek word Cyclos meaning coils of a snake. It


was coined by Henry Peddington
2 types – Tropical cyclones & Extra Tropical cyclones

How the Cyclones are named?

 In 2000, a group of nations called WMO/ESCAP (World Meteorological


Organisation/United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia
and the Pacific) , HQ’s – Bangkok, Thailand
 WMO/ESCAP expanded to include 5 more countries in 2018
Total countries in it – 13 (13 names by each country – 169)

 ‘Yaas’ – suggested by Oman - A tree with good fragrance (Jasmine), It


originated from Bay of Bengal, hit WB and Orrisa. Yaas in Persian
language
 ‘Tauktae’ a tropical cyclone, named by Myanmar. It means 'gecko', a highly
vocal lizard, in the Burmese language, hit Guj, Kerala, Kar, Goa and MH

1. Ample quantity of water
2. Sea surface temp. (27 degree or greater)
3. Presence of Coriolis of force
