STUDENTS’ PERSPECTIVE TOWARDS MODULAR DISTANCE LEARNING DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC OF

GRADE 8 STUDENTS IN AG-AGRAO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL : A QUALLITATIVE APPROACH STUDY

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

The fast development of the Internet, many colleges and universities have offered online courses as a
viable alternative to traditional face-to-face instruction. However, considerable concerns and problems
have developed, particularly as it relates to the quality of online education. Base on Jasmine Paul and

opting for online classes. They find the traditional classroom modality restrictive, inflexible, and
impractical. In this age of technological advancement, schools can now provide effective classroom
teaching via the Web. This shift in pedagogical medium is forcing academic institutions to rethink how
they want to deliver their course content.

ORIGIN OF ONLINE EDUCATION.

Though it may seem that online education had its beginnings in the late 1900s, the concept of distance
learning first came into practice in the mid 19th century when the U.S. Postal Service was developed.
The notion of reliable, long-distance correspondence led to the development and implementation of
what were called commercial ‘correspondence colleges', where instructional missives would be
distributed through the postal service between students and professors. Today, at-distance education
programs have become more sophisticated and accessible due to the proliferation of the web and digital
technology. Elite institutions around the world now offer open courseware, online degrees, and online
classes that are both legitimizing and popularizing the idea of education from a computer.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The 21st century has brought about a massive change in the world of education. Gone are those days
when teaching was limited only within the confines of a classroom. The internet has brought about a
paradigm shift in the fundamental way in which learning is done. It has taken learning beyond the
hallowed walls of the universities and into the palms of everyone. According to Soumik Sarkar On May

machines and tools in education throughout history, e-learning in the modern sense of the term is a
relatively new concept. Slide projectors and television-based classes have been in use since the 1950s.
However, one of the first instances of online learning in the world can be traced back to 1960, at the
University of Illinois, USA. Though the internet wasn’t invented back then, students began learning from
computer terminals that were interlinked to form a network.
The dramatic expansion of the online education delivery methods started in the 1980s with the
introduction of the first MAC. These computers became available for any family to keep in households
and enabled them to learn in the comfort home setting. Today, with the constant growth of technology,
online learning approaches and techniques just keep on advancing and becoming even more effective. In
2020, online education is extremely popular not just amongst people who are chasing after constant
learning for expanding knowledge but also widely used by many industries and businesses for delivering
employees updates on skills and teaching new staff job procedures.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study was aimed to determine the perspective of students towards Self-learning modules under the
pandemic in selected Grade 8 of Ag-agrao National High School, the researcher aim to determine and
answer the following specifically:

1. Who are the respondents of the study?

a. Name

b. Age.

c. Grade.

d. Perception towards online learning

2. What are the factors and challenges face by the students and teachers?

a. What are they adjustments

b. How do they adopt the learnings through self-learning modules?

c. What is the mode of learning deliberation?

3. What is the impact of covid-19 pandemic to the ways of learning of Grade 8 students in Ag-agrao
National High School?
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The objective of this study is to focus on the target data of the students’ perspective towards modular
distance learning and enumerate the gathered data to provide solution in-order to determine the focal
reasoning or root of their perceptions.

This study is aim to determine the following

 To identify the factors that the students think towards modular distance learning.

 To determine the ethical background of the students who are struggling the home-based classes
through self-learning modules

 To understand the adjustment of the teachers to deliver the lessons via modular distance
learning.

 To identify the level of students and teacher’s satisfaction towards teaching and learning trough
modules

STATEMENT OF HYPOTHESIS

1. There are no significant difference between the growing field of online education, the study of
computer science can provide you with a strong foundation in the technical and theoretical
aspects of computer technology, giving you the skills you need to create innovative tools for
distance learners. However, if you are interested in the business aspects of running a profitable
online college, a degree in business administration will teach you about the different elements
that go into running a successful company, from marketing and management to finance and
accounting. Finally, if you want to help make distance learning programs more effective, you can
learn about methods and theories for creating quality instruction by enrolling in an education or
instructional psychology degree program.
2. A Comparative Analysis of Student Performance on modular distance learning vs. Face-to-Face
Environmental Science Course From 2009 to 2016 (2019) Self- leaning modules and traditional
education share many qualities. Students are still required to attend class, learn the material,
submit assignments, and complete group projects. While teachers, still have to design
curriculums, maximize instructional quality, answer class questions, motivate students to learn,
and grade assignments. Despite these basic similarities, there are many differences between the
two modalities. Traditionally, classroom instruction is known to be teacher-centered and
requires passive learning by the student, while online instruction is often student-centered and
requires active learning.
3. “literature on the efficacy of online courses is expansive and divided” (Driscoll et al., 2012).
Some studies favor traditional classroom instruction, stating “online learners will quit more
easily” and “online learning can lack feedback for both students and instructors” (Atchley et al.,
2013). Because of these shortcomings, student retention, satisfaction, and performance can be
compromised. Like traditional teaching, distance learning also has its apologists who aver online
education produces students who perform as well or better than their traditional classroom
counterparts (Westhuis et al., 2006).
4. With technological advancement, learners now want quality programs they can access from
anywhere and at any time. Because of these demands, online education has become a viable,
alluring option to business professionals, stay-at home-parents, and other similar populations. In
addition to flexibility and access, multiple other face value benefits, including program choice
and time efficiency, have increased the attractiveness of distance learning (Wladis et al., 2015).
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Colleges and university students now find themselves with other obligations beyond getting a degree.
Such as, jobs and family commitments make equal demands on their time while also having the option
of taking classes online and studying on their own time is critically important. At the same time, in
Africa, in specific Uganda, many institutions are unable to accommodate all those who want to take
classes on campus while also being flexible with their own responsibilities, escalating the demand for
online learning.
Success in an online course often depends on how connected a student feels to his instructor and fellow
students just like in a traditional classroom. I believe that online learning is growing in Uganda and has
the potential to revolutionize higher education. Students will be able to learn at their own pace and
minor problems as simple as finding a place to park on campus will be eliminated.

students and teachers.

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

This study is mainly focused on the grade 8 students of Ag-agrao National High School the researcher is
aiming to determine the perspective of the students towards online learning and to identify its factors
and impact on their online classes deliberation it makes use of the process included were evaluation
tools and questioniare to gather and evaluate the expected data analysis, As with all research projects,
there were several initial delimitations to this study. First, it was limited by defining distance education
as on-line coursework only. Distance education classes are being delivered by correspondence, video
interaction, and video and audio interaction. By examining only courses that were offered on-line, the
results of the present study may have been influenced in some way.
