“Enhancing Teaching and Learning Thru Research Capability

Building”

Topic: Writing and Publishing a Research Paper

November 20, 2021

As COVID-19 continues to threaten every individual’s health, safety,

and even other aspects of their life, it is still not an excuse to cease
learning. Different sectors, particularly the field of education, have designed
their own way of carrying on their services despite the challenge brought by
this malaise. It is with the aim of continuing to enhance the skills and feed
the minds of the graduate students with new information enabling them to
be more competent especially in the field of research that the Ilocos Sur
Polytechnic State College came up with this challenging task---Research
Capability Webinar Series with the theme, “Enhancing Teaching and
Learning Thru Research Capability Building” initiated by the brilliant Dr.
Cherie B. Orpia with the aid of her students.
Last November 20, 2021, the fourth series of the said webinar took
place with another interesting topic---Writing and Publishing a Research
Paper which is believed to be a vital aspect in research writing.
The webinar started with a prayer, the singing of the Philippine
National Anthem and ISPSC Hymn all through audio-visual presentations,
followed by the opening/welcome message of Dr. Gilbert Arce, the
President III of ISPSC. The introduction to the lone speaker was done by
one of the student-facilitators. The speaker, Prof. Mark Angelo Balendres
who is currently a university researcher and professor in UP-Los Banos
talked about the topic comprehensively and enthusiastically. He also
presented an outline of his topics, making it easier for the audience to
comprehend the flow. He started with the guide in publishing research
paper, then the common reasons why we publish our research, the types of
review and its processes. He also mentioned some salient points on what
to do and not to do when a research paper gets rejected. He then shared
some things to consider before or during writing.
Moving on, the speaker showed an illustration of the organization of a
scientific paper from its abstract until the discussion and conclusion. He
provided us a smooth flow of discussion and illustrations/diagrams of Data
Presentation, Discussion, Writing the Results, Writing the Materials and
Methods Section, the Introduction, Abstract and Title. Also, he shared the
use of Academic Phrasebank to kickstart the writing since it is crucial to
choose the right phrases and terms to use in writing a formal paper like
research.
Another part of his discussion is providing us ample information about
scientific journals. Since some journals are not credible or predatory, the
speaker gave us the list of major publishers of journals that we can use.
Aside from that, he shared tips on spotting predatory journals.
He ended his discussion with powerful lines about writing.

After the discussion of Prof. Balendres, the participants were

encouraged by the facilitators to ask questions related to the topic during
the open forum.
