Importance of Leadership

Leadership is an important function of management which helps to maximize efficiency

and to achieve organizational goals. The following points justify the importance of
leadership in a concern.

1. Initiates action- Leader is a person who starts the work by communicating the
policies and plans to the subordinates from where the work actually starts.
2. Motivation- A leader proves to be playing an incentive role in the concern’s
working. He motivates the employees with economic and non-economic rewards
and thereby gets the work from the subordinates.
3. Providing guidance- A leader has to not only supervise but also play a guiding
role for the subordinates. Guidance here means instructing the subordinates the
way they have to perform their work effectively and efficiently.
4. Creating confidence- Confidence is an important factor which can be achieved
through expressing the work efforts to the subordinates, explaining them clearly
their role and giving them guidelines to achieve the goals effectively. It is also
important to hear the employees with regards to their complaints and problems.
5. Building morale- Morale denotes willing co-operation of the employees towards
their work and getting them into confidence and winning their trust. A leader can
be a morale booster by achieving full co-operation so that they perform with best
of their abilities as they work to achieve goals.
6. Builds work environment- Management is getting things done from people. An
efficient work environment helps in sound and stable growth. Therefore, human
relations should be kept into mind by a leader. He should have personal contacts
with employees and should listen to their problems and solve them. He should treat
employees on humanitarian terms.
7. Co-ordination- Co-ordination can be achieved through reconciling personal
interests with organizational goals. This synchronization can be achieved through
proper and effective co-ordination which should be primary motive of a leader.
Differences between Leadership and Management
Leadership differs from management in a sense that:

1. While managers lay down the structure and delegates authority and responsibility,
leaders provide direction by developing the organizational vision and
communicating it to the employees and inspiring them to achieve it.
2. While management includes focus on planning, organizing, staffing, directing and
controlling; leadership is mainly a part of directing function of management.
Leaders focus on listening, building relationships, teamwork, inspiring, motivating
and persuading the followers.
3. While a leader gets his authority from his followers, a manager gets his authority
by virtue of his position in the organization.
4. While managers follow the organization’s policies and procedure, the leaders
follow their own instinct.
5. Management is more of science as the managers are exact, planned, standard,
logical and more of mind. Leadership, on the other hand, is an art. In an
organization, if the managers are required, then leaders are a must/essential.
6. While management deals with the technical dimension in an organization or the
job content; leadership deals with the people aspect in an organization.
7. While management measures/evaluates people by their name, past records,
present performance; leadership sees and evaluates individuals as having
potential for things that can’t be measured, i.e., it deals with future and the
performance of people if their potential is fully extracted.
8. If management is reactive, leadership is proactive.
9. Management is based more on written communication, while leadership is based
more on verbal communication.

Strategic leadership refers to a manager’s potential to express a strategic vision

for the organization, or a part of the organization, and to motivate and persuade
others to acquire that vision. Strategic leadership can also be defined as utilizing
strategy in the management of employees. It is the potential to influence organizational
members and to execute organizational change. Strategic leaders create organizational
structure, allocate resources and express strategic vision
The main objective of strategic leadership is strategic productivity. Another aim of
strategic leadership is to develop an environment in which employees forecast the
organization’s needs in context of their own job. Strategic leaders encourage the
employees in an organization to follow their own ideas. Strategic leaders make greater
use of reward and incentive system for encouraging productive and quality employees to
show much better performance for their organization. Functional strategic leadership is
about inventiveness, perception, and planning to assist an individual in realizing his
objectives and goals.

Theories of Charismatic and visionary leadership

Visionary Leaders

Visionary leaders are individuals who use an idea about the way things could be
to motivate individuals to do as they say. This could be religious in nature, such as a
vision of a possible afterlife or a narrative of how humans fit into the big picture of the
universe. Alternatively, it could be a more worldly vision of how things here on Earth could
function, such as government policies to mandate better working conditions or how a new
product could change the world.

Charismatic Leaders

Charismatic leaders are individuals who gain a following because of their

personality. They are charming individuals who know how to make individuals think that
they like them, and have the charisma to make these individuals do as these leaders ask
to retain this imagined affection. This charisma can be a natural trait of how the leader
conducts himself, or a skill that the leader cultivates in order to carefully practice on the
individuals he leads.

Relative Effectiveness

The prime difference between strictly visionary leaders and strictly charismatic
leaders is the source of what makes people follow them -- their personality or the vision
of the future that they are selling. The problem that visionary leaders face is that simply
possessing a vision is not enough; the leader has to get people to accept the vision she
is offering and nurture their desire to make it a reality. If she cannot sell the idea, then she
had no basis for leadership. However, a charismatic leader's very strength comes from
his ability to sell his product, himself, to the people he wishes to lead.

The Motivational effects of Charismatic Leadership

Charismatic leader theory focuses on exceptional leaders having extraordinary

effects on their followers and their social system and makes their aspirations moves
from self-interest to collective interests leading to be highly committed to their mission.

The theories of charismatic leadership highlight the effect of being emotionally attached
to the leader such as the self-esteem, trust, confidence and values in the leader

A charismatic leaders’ envisioning behavior influences followers’ need for achievement,

and the leader’s empathic behavior stimulates followers need for affiliation. Followers
need for power is enhanced by charismatic leaders’ empowerment practices. It is further
suggested that the behaviors of a charismatic leader and the enhanced followers needs
promote clearer role perceptions, improved task performance, greater job satisfaction,
stronger collective identity and group cohesiveness, more organizational citizenship
behaviors, and stronger self-leadership among the followers.

I am Felipe Soriano Jr. and currently working as Accounts Payable in private
institution particularly in Makati Finance Corporation and worked for almost 4 years in this
respectable company. I interviewed our Accounting Manager Ms. Wilma P Fundan based
on the interview here are his responses:

During this pandemic, her primary strategy as a leader is being trustworthy and

the management of the company.

For 4 years working in Makati Finance Corporation, I am forever grateful to my

manager because she serves as my mentor in my first job and I always thankful to her
because she trusts me in every work, she assigned to me. For the past 4 years I handled
different type of work and personally I was very happy because it will benefit me as a first-
time employee because it will give me a lot of difference experiences that I may apply in
my future endeavors. For every new task that was assigned to me’ I always trust myself
just the way our manager trusts me and always do my best.

During this pandemic, we adopt the temporary work at home set up and honestly
it was difficult on my part because we are just renting and we don’t have enough space
in our boarding house. To cope within this situation, we properly organized all our things
in our boarding house and take necessary adjustment so that we can all adapt in this
situation.
