Instruction of Adjustment for Tacho System

Check item
1. Check for signal condition
The signal of encoders and pick-up sensor is to be checked whether the maker signals are correctly
given that is true or false, as described in Fig.1.

These signals can be checked in MOP screen, Maintenance → System View I/O Test as following
Fig.2.

Fig. 2. MOP screen “Maintenance → System View I/O Test → ECU-A”

- Ch.#40: MMA (signal from Encoder-A) / 0 - 180deg:True , 180-360deg:False

- Ch.#41: MSA (signal from pickup sensor on fly wheel) / 90 - 270deg:True , 270-90deg:False
- Ch.#44: MMB (signal from Encoder-B) / 45 - 225deg:True , 225-45deg:False
- Ch.#45: MSB (signal from Encoder-B) / 135 - 315deg:True , 315-135deg:False

When the signals is not in order in accordance with each angles, there might be the electlical signal cable
has been defective. And/or, the encoder or pick-up sensor might have been defective.
Please check the cabling condition between J40/J44/J45 on MPC “ECU-A/B & all CCUs” and TSA-A/B in
front of fore endcover and encoder-A/B concerning signal failure on encorders, and check the cabling
between between J41 on MPC “ECU-A/B & all CCUs” and TSA-A in front of fore endcover and junction
box for MSA pick-up sendor.

If the signal output is properly given in true & false in accordance with each crankshaft angles, the angle
of encoders might be deviated slightly over 0.20deg.

2. Check of angle deviation between encoder-A and encoder-B

*This procedure is able to carried out only in ECS version “Ver.0905-X.X” afterwards. The ECS version
“Ver.0510-X.X” is not available.

The angle deviation between encoder-A and encoder-B is confirmable as the value “Delta Tacho-B” in
MOP screen, Maintenance → Function Test → Tacho column as following Fig.3.

Fig.3. “Delta Tacho-B” on MOP column Maintenance → Function Test → Tacho

When the value “Delta Tacho-B” is over 1.00 and/or the value “Tacho Alignment Deviation” is over 0.20,
the position of encoder is to be adjusted.
Before the adjustment of encoder position is carried out, the lighting timing for LED of TSA-A & TSA-B is
to be confirmed by engine turning.

If the LED is lighting within ±0.05deg corresponding with the defined angle on one side of TSA, the
encoder for other side of TSA is to be adjusted. The defined angle is “MMA encoder-A = 0deg” and “MMB
encoder-B = 45deg”.

In case both LEDs on TSA-A & TSA-B are lighting over ±0.05deg corresponding with the defined angle,
both encoders are to be adjusted respectively.

Adjustment for Encoder A (fore side)

1. Turning the crank shaft to set NO.1 cylinder top within ±0.05 deg.

2. Loose the fix screw on a clamp ring for Encoder-A which is fore side.

3. Turn Encoder-A by a bar in order to adjust the position correctly. See the Fig.4.
(1) In case of LED of TSA-A turn off
Turn Encoder-A to Ahead direction until LED of TSA-A turns on. Then, turn Encoder-A a little
bit to Ahead and Astern direction several times in order to find where LED just turns on.
After that, tighten the fix screw in order to fix a clamp ring.
(2) In case of LED of TSA-A turn on
Turn Encoder-A to Astern direction until LED of TSA-A turns off. Then, turn Encoder-A a little
bit to Ahead and Astern direction several times in order to find where LED just turns on.
After that, tighten the fix screw in order to fix a clamp ring.

4. Turn the crank shaft to 358.0deg to make LED on TSA-A turn off. Then, turn the crank shaft to Ahead
direction. When the LED on TSA-A starts lighting within 0±0.05deg, the encoder for TSA-A has
correctly been adjusted. If the LED on TSA-A starts lighting over 0±0.05deg , the encoder is to be
adjusted again.

Adjustment for Encoder-B (Aft side)

1. Turning the crank shaft to set 45 ± 0.05 deg after NO.1 cylinder top.

2. Loose the fix screw on a clamp ring for Encoder-B which is aft side.

3. Turn Encoder-B by a bar in order to adjust the position correctly. See the Fig.4.
(1) In case of LED of TSA-B turn off
Turn Encoder-B to Ahead direction until LED of TSA-B turns on. Then, turn Encoder-B a little
bit to Ahead and Astern direction several times in order to find where LED just turns on.
After that, tighten the fix screw in order to fix a clamp ring.
(2) In case of LED of TSA-B turn on
Turn Encoder-B to Astern direction until LED of TSA-B turns off. Then, turn Encoder-B a little
bit to Ahead and Astern direction several times in order to find where LED just turns on.
After that, tighten the fix screw in order to fix a clamp ring.

4. Turn the crank shaft to 43.0deg to make LED on TSA-B turn off. Then, turn the crank shaft to Ahead
direction. When the LED on TSA-B starts lighting within 45±0.05deg, the encoder for TSA-B has
correctly been adjusted. If the LED on TSA-B starts lighting over 45±0.05deg , the encoder is to be
adjusted again.

Adjustment for pick-up sensor (MSA)

1. The target of pick-up is located between 90 deg and 270 deg after NO.1 cylinder TDC on fly-wheel.
Confirm the gap which is between the pick-up and the target is between 1.5 and 3.0mm.

2. Confirm that Ch.41 of ECU-A on MOP shows “True”, while the crank shaft is turned from 90 ± 0.05
deg to 270 ± 0.05 deg.

Function test of Tacho system

After adjustment of encoders and pickup sensor is carried out, the function test for Tacho system should
be operated as shown in Fig.7.

Fig.7. Function Test

Confirmation of crank angle

After adjustment of encoders and pickup sensor is carried out, the engine should be turn more than 3
rotations by air-run operation.
Check the angle deviation within 0.20 deg. on the screen of MOP in Fig.3, and confirm there are not any
ECS alarms concerning Tacho alarm.
