EQUATIONS WORKSHEET 1

1. Write WORD EQUATIONS for each of the following reactions:

(a) magnesium oxide reacts with water to produce magnesium hydroxide

Magnesium oxide + water Magnesium hydroxide

(b) calcium chloride is produced from the reaction involving calcium and chlorine

Ca+Cl  Calcium chloride

(c) solid aluminum is mixed with a solution of copper (II) chloride to make a solution of
aluminum chloride and solid copper
aluminum + copper (II) chloride → aluminum chloride + copper

2. Write SKELETAL EQUATIONS for the following reactions:

(a) sodium + fluorine gas  sodium fluoride

Na + F2→ NaF

(b) sodium + water  sodium hydroxide + hydrogen gas

Na + H2O → NaOH + H2

(c) potassium + magnesium bromide  potassium bromide + magnesium

K + MgBr2→ KBr + Mg

(d) magnesium bromide + sodium chloride  magnesium chloride + sodium bromide

MgBr2 + NaCl → MgCl2 + NaB

EQUATIONS WORKSHEET 2 – READ INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
Write the word equations AND skeletal equations for each of the following chemical reactions:

1) When dissolved beryllium chloride reacts with dissolved silver nitrate in water, aqueous beryllium nitrate and
silver chloride powder are made.

2) When isopropanol (C3H8O) burns in oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and heat are produced.

BeCl2 (aq) + AgNO3 (aq) →Be(NO3)2 (aq) + AgCl (s)

3) When aqueous sodium hydroxide reacts with sulfuric acid (H 2SO4), aqueous sodium sulfate and water are
formed.
NaOH(aq) + H2SO4 (aq) → Na2SO4 (aq) + H2O(l)

4) Fluorine gas reacts with calcium metal at high temperatures. Calcium fluoride powder is created.

F2 (g) + Ca (s) → CaF2 (s)

5) When sodium metal reacts with iron (II) chloride, iron metal and sodium chloride are formed.

Na (s) + FeCl2 (aq) → Fe + NaCl(aq)

6) Solid barium metal burns in oxygen gas react to produce solid barium oxide.

Ba (s) + O2 (g) → BaO (s)

7) Solid iron metal and sulfuric acid react to produce aqueous iron (III) sulfate and hydrogen gas.

Fe (s) + H2SO4 (aq) → Fe2(SO4)3 + H2 (g)

8) Carbonic acid is an unstable acid that breaks down to produce water and carbon dioxide gas.
H2CO3 (aq)  H2O+ CO2(g)

9) Hydrogen chloride gas reacts with ammonia gas to produce solid ammonium chloride.
HCI (g) + NH3 (g)  NH4CL

10) Aqueous magnesium chloride and aqueous potassium carbonate react to form aqueous
potassium chloride and a precipitate of magnesium carbonate.
MgCL2 (ag) + K2CO3 (aq)  KCL (aq) + MgCO3 (s)

11) Aqueous hydrogen chlorite breaks down to produce water and dichlorine trioxide gas.

Hydrogen chloriteWater+ dichlorine trioxide

12) Aqueous solutions of bismuth (III) nitrate and sodium sulfide yield a precipitate of
bismuth (III) sulfide and aqueous sodium nitrate.
Bi(NO3)3 (aq) + Na2S (aq) BiS3 (s)+ NaNO3 (aq)
