Section 07950 Expansion Control
Section 07950 Expansion Control
Section 07950 Expansion Control
PART 1 - GENERAL
A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including Conditions of Contract and
Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.2 SUMMARY
A. Section Includes:
B. Related Sections:
1.3 REFERENCES
A. All reference to standards, regulations and requirements of statutory bodies shall mean the
latest published editions at the time of contract. Product manufacture, testing and installation
shall comply with the following references unless otherwise stated in the specification or
otherwise approved.
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. General: Refer to Section 01330 Submittal Procedures for submittal requirements and
procedures.
B. Product Data and Shop Drawings: Submit manufacturers' product data of vertical and
horizontal expansion-joint closures, assemblies, seals, and sealants for review. Include
installation details.
C. Architectural Joint System Schedule: Prepared by or under the supervision of the supplier.
Include the following information in tabular form:
E. Samples: Full size units 150 mm long, of expansion joint cover assembly indicated; in sets
for each finish, colour, texture, and pattern specified, showing full range of variations
expected in these characteristics.
F. Fire Rating Certification: Submit copies certification for fire-rated joint covers from acceptable
testing and inspecting agency.
1.5 WARRANTY
1. Warranty Period: Ten (10) years from the date of substantial completion.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
A. Expansion joint closures and seals shall be aluminium extrusions and neoprene or silicone
rubber seals of type and size to suit the construction as indicated.
Provide continuous cover joint assemblies consisting of elastomeric fill factory bonded to
extruded aluminium frames of profile indicated or required to suit types of installation
conditions shown. Provide frames for floor joints with means for embedding in or anchoring
to concrete without using exposed fasteners and that will result in exposed surfaces of
sealant and aluminium frames finishing flush with adjacent finished floor surface without
exposing anchors.
D. Compression Seals: Preformed, elastomeric extrusions having internal baffle system in sizes
and profiles shown or as recommended by the manufacturer. Provide lubricant and adhesive
for installation recommended by the manufacturer. The joint filler in expansion or other
specified joints in walls shall be pre-moulded filler which shall be water proof, compressible
and non-extruding and shall have a high factor of recovery after compression at the
maximum temperatures likely to occur at Site. The filler shall be cut to exact width, with
edges neatly trimmed, and fixed strictly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Joints shall be finished with a joint sealant or where plastered, rendered or other decorative
finishes are applied, shall have an approved decorative cover that will allow movement
without damage to the finishes.
A. Requirements: Fire-rated joint covers shall have been tested in accordance with ASTM E119
and ASTM E814, including hose stream test at full rated period. Covers shall be classified by
approved testing agency. Minimum fire rating shall be two hours, but not less than rating of
adjacent construction. Materials shall be inorganic and shall not create smoke or contribute
fuel during a fire.
1. All metal components and cover plates shall be 300 Series (18-8) stainless steel with
No. 4 finish. Aluminium is not acceptable.
B. Fire Barrier: Fabricated of layers of ceramic fibre insulation and metallic insulation.
C. Flame Sealant: Sealant shall remain resilient to permit joint movement and shall, upon
exposure to heat, increase in volume to resist penetration of fire through voids in
construction.
E. Fire-Rated Joint Covers: Fire barrier and flame sealant shall provide required fire rating.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1 PREPARATION
B. Coordinate and furnish anchorages, setting drawings, templates, and instructions for
installation of expansion joint cover assemblies to be embedded in or anchored to concrete or
to have recesses formed into edges of concrete slab for later placement and grouting-in of
frames.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Expansion Joint Assemblies: Install expansion-joint assemblies and engineered floor and
wall seals as indicated and in accordance with the approved Shop Drawings and the
manufacturer's installation instructions and recommendations.
B. Fire-Rated Joint Assemblies: Install as required to meet fire-rated design and construction.
Install fire barriers and flame sealant as required to complete the installation and meet fire-
rating requirements.
D. Cutting, Fitting and Placement: Perform cutting, drilling, and fitting required to install
expansion joint covers. Install joint cover assemblies in true alignment and proper
relationship to expansion joints and adjoining finished surfaces measured from established
lines and levels. Allow adequate free movement for thermal expansion and contraction of
metal to avoid buckling. Set floor covers at elevations to be flush with adjacent finished floor
materials. Locate wall, ceiling, roof, and soffit covers in continuous contact with adjacent
surfaces. Securely attach in place with required accessories. Locate anchors at interval
recommended by manufacturer.
E. Continuity: Maintain continuity of expansion joint cover assemblies with a minimum number
of end joints and align metal members mechanically using splice joints. Cut and fit ends to
produce joints that will accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of metal to avoid
buckling of frames. Adhere flexible filler materials (if any) to frames with adhesive or
pressure-sensitive tape as recommended by manufacturer.
F. Elastomeric Sealant Joint Assemblies: Seal end joints within continuous runs and joints at
transitions according to manufacturer's directions to provide a watertight installation.
Do not remove protective covering until finish work in adjacent areas is complete. When
protective covering is removed, clean exposed metal surfaces and comply with
manufacturer's instructions.
