CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 is an illness caused by a novel
coronavirus called severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-
CoV-2 formerly called 2019-nCoV), which was first identified amid an outbreak
of respiratory illness cases in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. It was
initially reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on December 31,
2019. On January 30, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 outbreak a
global health emergency. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared COVID-19 a
global pandemic, its first such designation since declaring H1N1 influenza a
pandemic in 2009.
On January 22, 2020, the first suspected case in the Philippines was
reported followed by another 633 suspected cases as of March 1.
On March 8, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation 922
placing the entire country under the state of public health emergency because
of the threat of viral infection.
The Luzon ECQ is described under a March 16 memorandum from
Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea by the order of President as
compliance to Proclamation No. 629, Proclamation No. 922 and R.A. No.
11332.
This is followed by April 30 to May 31 extension of ECQ and MECQ cities
and provinces of Luzon. The classes are suspended and resumed through
online and modular learning system.
The province of Ifugao, in compliance with the community quarantine
suspended face to face learning and ordered their schools and universities to
implement the New Normal class (online and modular learning system). Lawig
National High School, one of the prestigious schools in the province, in
fulfillment to their duties to non-face to face learning, adjusted to the
convenience of students and shifted to Modular Learning system.
In the implementation of Modular Learning system, a study shows that
students encounter challenges such as self-studying, poor internet connection,
lack of sleep due to poor time management adjusting chores and study time.
During quarantine, problems may arise but due to limited freedom, these tends
to pile up and cause stress to people.
Stress is not only a reaction to an environmental stimulus but also a
process through which individuals feel and contend with the challenges and
threats in their environments. Stressors are personal and environmental
circumstances that generate stress. Stress thus involves emotional
disturbances or changes caused by stressors.
Experiences of stress among students are considered a major problem in
higher education. Failure to cope with stress might have an adverse influence
on students’ mental and physical well-being and could become a burden.
Yusoff et. al. conducted a study to determine the impact of medical education
on the psychological health of students. The results showed that the main
health problems were anxiety (41.1–56.7%), followed by depression (12–30%)
and stress (11.9–19.9%). The learning environment at medical school is
considered to be a particularly stressful environment .
One study conducted shows that these are the main stressors during
quarantine: Duration of quarantine; Fears of infection; Frustration and
boredom: Inadequate supplies; Inadequate information and Finances.
The consequences for the Student of these mental health problems
shows through the negative effect to their energy level, concentration,
dependability, mental ability, and optimism, affecting good performance. Many
students report that mental health difficulties interfere with their studies.
This study aims to determine the Stressors and their impact in the
academic performance of students during the start of new normal class:
- What are the Stressors that affects the academic performances of
students during quarantine?
- What stressor has the greatest percentage of impact to the
students’ performance?
- Does the academic performance of students during quarantine
show (big) significant gap to their academic performance before
quarantine?
NULL HYPOTHESIS
The stressors are always present and has basically no effect in the
academic performance of senior high school students of Lawig National High
School.

- This study may provide a good framework for future studies
regarding Mental Health and can be a good reference for research
studies.
