What is work permit in Aramco?

SAUDI ARAMCO PROGRAM (Work Permit Receiver)

A work permit is an essential part of a process that determines the hazards associated with a

particular activity and the precautions to take so the job can be carried out safely.

Course Overview:

A work permit is an essential part of a process that determines the hazards associated with a
particular activity and the precautions to take so the job can be carried out safely.

When issued, work permits serve as official records of conditions and minimum safety
precautions agreed upon by the issuer and receiver to control hazards associated with the work.

Work permit receiver candidates are required to successfully complete the following classroom
courses as prerequisites before being allowed to take the receiver’s certification course.

Targeted Audience:

Supervisor, Operations, Maintenance, Contractors, PTW receivers, Gas testing officer Standby
Person, Fire Watches, All personnel who enter a confined space, perform Lock-out Tag-out, and
involved in Work permit process.

WPR Pre-Requisite Certificate:

The National Power Academy (NPA), being an official approved WPR training & examination
center by ARAMCO, offers a 4-day training program for WPR participants in order to gain a
pre-requisite completion certificate.

Please note:
In order to acquire the official WPR certificate FINAL ASSESMENT will be conducted in
SAUDI ARAMCO PREMESIS based on completion certificate issued by NPA.

Enabling Objectives:

Hazard Recognition and Control

 This course will provide participants with the information needed to understand the potential hazards at workplace and the
elements necessary to control those hazards.

Lock Out/Tag Out (L.O.T.O.)

 This course will define minimum requirements for safely isolating energy sources associated.
 with equipment and operating processes and project sites to ensure protection of personnel and assets during maintenance,
inspection and testing of equipment.

Confined Space Entry

 Confined spaces can be very dangerous places unless proper procedures are followed before and during entry. Working in
confined spaces is an everyday occurrence in many occupations. When these spaces are properly identified and assessed,
entry plans are in place and the plans are followed, work performed within a confined space can be completed safely and
efficiently.

Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) are used to protect users against oxygen

deficiency, dust, gases and vapors at plants, aboard vessels, at fire and in tunnels. ... SCBA has
the air breathing apparatus and oxygen breathing apparatus.
The cylinders contain about 1240 litres of compressed air at 200-atmosphere pressure. This
gives the wearer around 31 minutes of air supply for full usage or about 21 minutes for working
conditions (person breathes heavily during work hence there is more consumption of air and
that is why the time is lesser)

What are Scbas used for?

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is a device worn to provide breathable

air in environments with oxygen deficiency, smoke, dangerous gases, and other
airborne contaminants that may be otherwise dangerous to breathe.

What is the duration of SCBA?

The duration of usage for breathing apparatus is between 10 minutes (short-term
SCBA) up to about 45 minutes (long-term SCBA). Depending on requirements, you
can use cylinder volume, pressure and thus the amount of compressed air specific to
your application.

How many bars are in SCBA?

audible whistle warning air pressure 50 bar +/- 5 bar. whistle warning during use
indicates low air pressure.

How long does a SCBA last?

between 15 and 30 years

The MSA SCBA Cylinder Service Life overall is between 15 and 30 years (depending on style of
cylinder), as long as they are adequately and professionally serviced throughout their lifespan.

Stop Work Authority (SWA) provides employees and contract workers with the responsibility and obligation to stop work
when a perceived unsafe condition or behaviour may result in an unwanted event.
You probably have a Stop Work Authority Program at your work, but how efficient
is it?
Stop Work Authority programs are implemented to protect your workers from job site hazards and to mitigate the future risk that
arises from these hazards. A SWA program can be your worker’s first line of defense against injury on the job site.

In fact, OSHA makes it a point that all places of work should have a SWA program. The OSHA general duty clause, Section 5(a)(1) of the
Occupational Safety and Health Act, requires that each employer furnish to each of its employees a workplace that is free from
recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm.

Many times, workers don’t adhere to a Stop Work Authority program due to excessive bureaucracy. That could mean more injuries for
your workers.

To simplify the process, use the SAFER system:

Stop work
Asses the situation
File a report
Eradicate Hazard
Resume
1. Stop work – When a worker perceives an unsafe condition, hazard, or behavior on the job site, they have an obligation to stop work
or intervene on behalf of another person at risk.
If the danger is immediate, stop work immediately and begin the SAFER sequence. If the danger is not immanent, report the hazard to
a supervisor and make it clear that it is a SWA request.

2. Asses the situation – stop work activities and make the area as safe as possible by recognizing the hazards, removing workers
from the area, reporting the incident to a supervisor, and stabilizing the situation.
3. File a report – Your company should have an official SWA authorization form. This helps record what actions were taken to
mitigate the hazard to prevent future injuries. If the request is valid, a SWA authorization form will need to be filled out before
resuming work.
4. Eradicate the hazard – the unsafe conditions, hazards, or behaviors will be corrected according to the plans outlined in the SWA
authorization form. The work areas that are affected will need to be inspected by a qualified professional to ensure that all hazards
have been successfully resolved.
5. Resume – once the hazards have been recorded, removed or corrected, and inspected, workers will be educated on what actions
were taken and work should be then be resumed.
Finally, make sure your supervisors and managers actually follow up on these reports and make changes. That could mean the
difference between future risk and an accident-free workplace.
The SAFER technique keeps your workers safe while optimizing your organization’s efficiency at the same time. Proper recording and
following-up of these incidents will help improve workflow for future events. It also keeps your company in line with OSHA standards.

Who has stop work authority?

Situations that warrant a Stop Work Authority may include, but are not limited to the following:
 Change in conditions.
 Changes to scope of work or work plan.
 Emergency situation.
 Equipment used improperly.
 Lack of knowledge, understanding or information.
 Near-miss incident.
 Unsafe conditions.
 Alarms.

WHAT IS PTW (PERMIT TO WORK) HSE TRAINING? Course overview. Permit to work system ensures that hazardous
high risk activities, ie tasks that have the potential to cause serious injury or death, are caried out under specific
permission (permit) from an authorized competent person.
What is BA set?

A self contained breathing apparatus, or SCBA, sometimes referred to as a

Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus (CABA), air pack, or simply Breathing Apparatus
(BA) is a device worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable
air in an IDLH (Immediate Danger to Life and Health) Atmosphere.
What is a firefighter mask called?
A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), sometimes referred to as a
compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) or simply breathing apparatus (BA), is
a device worn to provide breathable air in an atmosphere that is immediately dangerous
to life or health. They are typically used in firefighting and industry.

What is Level C PPE?

Level C protection is required when the concentration and type of airborne substances
is known and the criteria for using air purifying respirators is met. Typical Level C
equipment includes: full-face air purifying respirators; ... disposable chemical-
resistant outer boots.Rab. II 10, 1443 AH

What are the 4 main components of SCBA?

SCBA consists of a backpack and harness, air cylinder assembly, regulator
assembly, and face piece assembly.

How long is a 2.2 SCBA bottle rated for?

SCBA tanks are usually pressurized to 2,216 psi (150 bar), 4,500 psi (300 bar), or 5,500
psi (380 bar). No matter the working pressure, cylinders are commonly rated for 30, 45,
or 60 minutes.
Why do firefighters wear breathing apparatus?
Firefighters rely on self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) to protect them from
dangerous heat and toxic smoke. High temperatures and heat flows in NIST fire
research melted a hole in a SCBA mask.
What is the difference between SCBA and scuba?
SCUBA regulators deliver air on demand and a SCBA is a positive pressure system
where air is continually delivered to your mask at about 5 psi then increase with
demand.

What is the full form of SWL & SCBA?

Safe Working Load
How is SWL calculated?
To calculate the SWL of fibre rope in kilograms, square the rope diameter (D) in
millimetres (mm). For example: Diameter = 25 mm SWL (kg) = D2 (mm) SWL (kg) = D
(mm) x D (mm) = 25 x 25 = 625 kg SWL (t) = 0.625 tonnes.

What is a SWL crane?

The SWL for off shore cranes are the static rated load that each complete crane
assembly is approved to lift on the cargo hook including the weight of the gear (hook,
block, wire, etc.). ...

What does MBS mean in weight?

Usually marked on the equipment by the manufacturer. It is a calculation of
the Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) aka Minimum Breaking Load (MBL) divided by
a safety factor, usually ranging from 4 to 6 on lifting equipment.

What is the difference between SWL and WLL?

“WLL” stands for “working load limit” while “SWL” stands for “safe working load.” The
main differences between safe working load from working load limit is that “SWL” is
the older term. Today, SWL is not used anymore because it has been completely
replaced by the term WLL.

What does WLL mean on a shackle?

Working Load Limit. WLL refers to the maximum allowed weight that a particular piece
of rigging can handle under normal conditions.

Can an appointed person be a crane supervisor?

An appointed person may also be a crane supervisor or crane operator in addition to
being an appointed person. The role is a very responsible one as the appointed person
must have good working knowledge of lifting operations and safe working.

What is SWL rope?

SWL (safe working limit): this is the force that can be applied to a rope (or any other
piece of lifting equipment) to lift, suspend or lower an object without fear of breaking,
and includes a margin of safety. It is sometimes referred to as working load limit (WLL)

Can you exceed SWL?

The maximum load (as determined by a competent person) which an item of Lifting
Equipment may raise, lower or suspend under particular service conditions, e.g. the
SWL can be lower than, but can never exceed, the WLL
What is WLL breaking strength?

Working Load Limit or WLL refers to the maximum allowed weight. A winch strap with
a WLL of 5,000 pounds, should not be used to secure any load above that weight.
Working Load Limit is always 1/3 of the breaking strength.

What is the difference between SWL and MBL?

This load represents a force that is much less than that required to make the lifting
equipment fail or yield, also known as the Minimum Breaking Load (MBL). SWL or WLL
are calculated by dividing MBL by a safety factor (SF).

What is load chart?

Definition of load chart

: a schematic and graphic device to indicate the amount of authorized work yet to
be performed by a machine, a group, or any other producing unit in a factory.

What is MBL in lifting?

Minimum breaking strength, MBL/MBF"

or "minimum breaking load/force" indicates the load or force that must be achieved
before the lifting equipment risks breaking or undergoing a change that causes the load
to loosen.
What is MBS in rigging?
Minimum Breaking Strength (MBS) and Working Load Limit (WLL), formerly known as
Safe Working Load (SWL), are two important strength ratings when it comes to rigging
and safety equipment. They vary based on what type of rigging or safety equipment and
are identified by manufacturers.

What is breaking load?

Breaking load means the stress or tension steadily applied and just sufficient to
break or rupture.

How is rigging load calculated?

The load factor can also be calculated by dividing the length of the sling by the
height of the sling. Once the sling load force is calculated, you can compare it with the
safe working load for the sling and associated rigging equipment. The safe working load
needs to be greater than the sling load force

How is rigging weight calculated?

Figure 1
1. Calculate the weight of a steel plate (shown in figure 1) 2ft wide X 5ftlong X 1inch
(0.0833ft) thick.
2. Use the formula:
3. Volume = Length X Width X Height.
4. Unit weight of steel is 490 lbs/ft³
5. Volume = 5ft X 2ft X 0.0833ft X 490 lbs/ft³
6. Weight = 408.3 lbs.
7. What is the formula for load?
8. Multiply the mass of the object by the gravitational acceleration of the earth
(9.8 m/sec2), and the height in meters. This equation is the object at rest's
potential energy. Potential energy is measured in joules; this is the load force

What is the difference between safe working load and working load limit?
Summary: WLL stands for working load limit while SWL stands for safe working load. ...
Safe working load is the older term of working load limit. The definition for safe working
load is the breaking load of a component divided by an appropriate factor of
safety giving a safe load that could be lifted or be carried.

How is rigging load calculated?

The load factor can also be calculated by dividing the length of the sling by the
height of the sling. Once the sling load force is calculated, you can compare it with the
safe working load for the sling and associated rigging equipment. The safe working load
needs to be greater than the sling load force.
How is working load calculated?
Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum working load designed by the
manufacturer. ... The WLL is calculated by dividing MBL by a safety factor (SF). An
example of this would be a chain that has a MBL of 2000 lbf (8.89 kN) would have a
SWL or WLL of 400 lbf (1.78 kN) if a safety factor of 5 (5:1, 5 to 1, or 1/5) is used.

How do you calculate safe working load?

How to calculate safe working load (SWL) The SWL is determined by dividing the
minimum breaking strength (MBS) of a component by a safety factor assigned to
that type and use of equipment.Dhuʻl-Q. 29, 1438 AH

How are offshore rigs powered?

The energy needed on offshore drilling rigs is usually supplied by diesel engines.

Typically these engines use 20–30 m3 diesel fuel per day, depending on the operations
performed. Several measures can be used to reduce energy consumption, the amount
of diesel burned, and emissions to the air

How do oil rigs get their power?

The most common way to supply enough power to the rig is through the use of diesel-
powered generators. ... As such, the generators that are produced to be used on oil
rigs must be built with materials and coatings that can withstand the temperature-
extremes, water, saline and wind that are present offshore.
How much power does an oil rig use?
Offshore oil and gas platforms use 16 terawatt-hours a year to power their operations.
This is an opportunity for wind and solar.

How much oil does an offshore rig produce?

The data is barrels per day per rig. The USA produces 4,577 barrels per day for every
active rig while the Middle Ease produces 59,945 barrels per day per rig, down from
140,144 in 2000. Well the reason is we in the USA just don't get nearly as much oil per
well as they do in the Middle east

How does oil drilling work on land?

The process goes something like this: first you find an oil well. Then you fence off the
land and build a rig. Next, you drill all the way down to wherever the oil well is. Once the
hole has been drilled, you then pump liquids at high pressure levels to remove the oil
from the ground.

What equipment is on an oil rig?

Drilling for oil involves the use of bulky and specialized equipment. The equipment
needs an enormous and continuous power supply. That makes power supplies an
essential part of the oil and gas industry. Heavy instruments include equipment such
as hoisting systems, cranes, turntables, pumps, and large engines.
How do oil wells work?

An oil well is a boring in the Earth that is designed to bring petroleum oil hydrocarbons
to the surface. ... Wells are created by drilling down into an oil or gas reserve that is
then mounted with an extraction device such as a pumpjack which allows extraction
from the reserve.

What is rig system?

• Circulating system. • Rotary system. • Well control system. The rig is basically
comprised of a derrick, the drawworks with its drilling line, crown block and traveling
block, and a drilling fluid circulation system including the standpipe, rotary hose, drilling
fluid pits and pumps.Saf. 19, 1437 AH
What is rig work?
As an oil rig worker, your responsibilities involve supporting oil and gas drilling and
extraction operations on an offshore oil platform. ... Oil rig positions such as a
derrickman and driller work directly with the equipment needed to drill and extract the
oil.
