A REPORT FOLLOWING THE INSPECTION OF THE RECREATIONAL FACILITY
MAKERERE POOL IN MAKERERE UNIVERSITY, KAMPALA, UGANDA.

INTRODUCTION:
On the 8th of December 2021 at 12:45pm, I conducted an onsite evaluation of the sanitary and
safety conditions of Makerere pool located in Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. I was
received and assisted with guidance and necessary details by the pool’s caretaker Mr. Johnson
Mujabi.

OBJECTIVES OF THE INSPECTION:


The main purpose of the inspection was to gain field exposure and knowledge of inspection as an
Environmental Health Student. The inspection was also carried out for the purpose of inspecting
the safety and sanitary condition of the pool to see if it conforms to required set standard and also
to make recommendations where necessary.

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION:
Location: Makerere University. Care Taker’s name: Mr. Johnson Mujabi.
Name of Premises: Makerere University Pool. Care Taker’s Contact: 0702560689.
Type: Semi-Public Pool. Time: 13:45.
Operator: Makerere University Department Of sport Science.

LOCATION:
Makerere pool is located in Makerere University opposite DFCU bank Makerere Branch,
Kampala, Uganda.

LINCENSE STATUS:
Unknown

DESCRIPTION:
The premises is a permanent structure made of cement and brick masonry.
METHODOLOGY:
The methods by which information was gotten were;
 Observation and;
 Interviews.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

I. There were materials that could lead to injury around the pool.
II. There was no indication of deep and shallow part of the pool.
III. There were also plastic litters in the surrounding.
IV. There was no supervision to make sure people have their face mask on and even
sanitize their hand before entering.
V. There was no fire extinguisher around.
VI. Drainage covers were broken.
VII. The toilet light were damaged.
VIII. There was water flowing on toilet floor.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
I. Surroundings of the pool should be cleared and all injurious materials should be
removed.
II. There should be a sign indicating the deep and shallow part of the pool.
III. Trained persons should be employed to keep the vicinity clean and tidy at all times.
IV. Trained personnel should be stationed at the entrance to ensure every one sanitize and
have their face mask on.
V. Provision of fire extinguisher and first aid kit in the premises.
VI. Drainage cover should be fixed.
VII. Damaged light to be fixed.
VIII. Leakage in toilet should be fixed.
IX. Tissue, soap should be provided for good hygiene in the toilets.

CONCLUSION:
After Inspection, I will recommend the above challenges be put into consideration and worked
on as soon as possible as some aspects did not meet minimum required standard.
