The use of digital computer methods to control aero gas turbines is comparatively
new.
The paper attemps to cover their background and essential features in broad outline. It
discusses the special properties of digital computer control systems in relation to
hydromechanical and electric analog arrangements and the special problems of design
and
safety involved. Some results of practical tests on a large complex engine are
presented
and discussed, special emphasis being given to those techniques which are particular
to
digital systems. The paper finally suggests the directions in which future developments
of
these systems might move.
Digital Computer Control of Gas Turbine

INTRODUCTION
The use of digital computer methods to control aero gas turbines is comparatively
new. This paper attempts to cover their background and essential features in broad
outline. This "survey o the field" is backed by illustrations of specific
points drawn from practical operating experience.
BACKGROUND
The work on digital control, which we shall
discuss, has 25-year-old roots. The Bristol
Brabazon was a very large (230-ft wing span)
transport aircraft designed at the end of World
War II. Wing flexure complicated the design of
conventional throttle linkages between pilot and
engine to such an extent that an electric position
control servo was specified when the next large
aircraft, the Saunders-Roe Princess flying boat,
was built.
This machine was to be fitted with Bristol
Proteus turbo-propeller engines. The same engine
was later specified for the Bristol Britannia.
Concurrently with the change of application, the
simple fly-by-wire servo was elaborated to give
more complete control of the power plant (1). 2
This system, which entered airline service in 1959
achieved an in-flight shut down rate of 185 per
million hours. Experience with the Proteus system
led to the use of more sophisticated electric
analog control systems on later engines, notably
the Olympus 320 for the TSR-2 aircraft and the
Olympus 593 for Concorde (2-4).
Probably the greatest virtue which these
systems possessed (from the point of view of the
engine manufacturer) was the extreme ease with
which the control schedules could be modified
during development. Digital computer methods held
the promise of even greater flexibility by program 3 changes. It was awareness of this
potential and experience of its value combined with successful operation of electric
controls which led to the work described in this paper.
Our practical research was begun in 1963, with studies of the effects of digitizing the
various traditional control modes of the existing analog electrical control systems.
Control algorithms and engine components were represented in discrete (difference
equation) form and programmed in ALGOL for the KDF9 computer. By this means we
were able to assess parameters such as sampling rate, input/output quantization
levels, and computer word length effects before specifying the irst control computer
and interface for engine tests. We concluded that for preliminary studies e needed an
established reliable machine rather than one designed for airborne use. A general
purpose core store computer was selected on the basis of programming flexibility,
speed, wordlength, and storage capacity. For similar reasons, we decided to use
existing transducers and actuators and make all inputs and outputs to the computer
do. Programming the control algorithms as simplified by writing subroutines in
machine ich could be used many times in one complete iteration of the control
program. For example, subroutines identified by the names Read, Output, Integrate,
Subtract, Schedule, Multiply, and Select were made available for the control designer
to combine as necessary. Fig.2 shows na example of a simple engine speed governor
and acceleration
control program flow diagram. The
computing time for one iteration of this program
was 5.5 mS, but the control cycle was initiated at
100 mS intervals--leaving 94.5 mS in each control
cycle for other computing tasks.
The first engine tests on a single spool engine
were sufficiently promising (11) to lead to
continued research with particular interest to be
shown in the more complex control requirements of
twin-spool supersonic engines with variable nozzle
and reheat. At the same time, the work was extended
to cover more elaborate simulation techniques
(12), the problems of multi-engine control,
and safety philosophies for digital systems.
EXPERIENCES IN COMPLEX POWER PLANT CONTROL
Engine Control
Safety Procedures
These have been discussed generally in a
previous section. Throughout the period of test
bed demonstrations, safety procedures have been included in the control programs.
The techniques
for detecting failures have been comparisons between
similar transducers and comparisons between
transducers and updated models. The latter technique
has been successfully used to detect actuator
failures and is relatively simple to organize
in a digital system.
Reversionary procedures tested have included
system ''freezing" with reversion to manual, and
reversion to a simple flow scheduling mode of control
in single-lane systems. The computer updates
a flow schedule, which is compatible with engine
conditions, so that the engine can be handled
smoothly following certain transducer failures.
A further demonstration, based on simulated
engines and two computers, has been used to illustrate
the more sophisticated reversionary modes
available in multi-computer organizations. Either
computer was able to control one or both engines
on detection of a computer failure.
Performance Optimizing
Power plant performance optimizing has been
considered to be one of the areas in which a
digital control system could show real advantages
in operating economics. Our experiments were conducted
on a twin-spool engine with variable nozzle
and with a modification such that air could be
bled from the low-pressure compressor. The aim
was to maximize thrust by manipulating nozzle and
air bleed, but to maintain constant fuel flow. An
analog simulation of aircraft and gust characteristics
was included in the optimizer loop. The
hill-climber utilized modified binary noise signals
as orthogonal inputs and correlated these
against total thrust output to compute the necessary changes in operating levels. A
typical result
is shown in Fig.b, where the optimum condition
is reached after three perturbation sequences.
An analysis has recently been completed of
the sensitivity of a typical SST performance to
wide range ambient conditions and manufacturing
tolerances in engine, intake, and controls using
an approach similar to that developed (11) for
full engine simulation. Individual system components
are simulated from rig tests, thermodynamic
data, and so on, and matched to produce running
points. Off-design aircraft conditions can be
evaluated in this way. The general conclusion has been that existing performance
"hills" are shallow, but systems designed for more optimum performance could show
more acute sensitivities and make optimization
of this type worthwhile.
CONCLUSIONS
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
armazenamento. Por razões semelhantes, decidimos usar transdutores e atuadores
existentes e fazer todas as entradas e saídas do computador funcionarem. A
e reaquecimento. Ao mesmo tempo, o trabalho foi ampliado
para cobrir técnicas de simulação mais elaboradas
(12), os problemas de controle multimotor,
e filosofias de segurança para sistemas digitais.
Controle do motor
As técnicas
para detectar falhas, foram feitas comparações entre
transdutores semelhantes e comparações entre
transdutores e modelos atualizados. A última técnica
O objetivo
operacionais.
tolerâncias no motor, admissão e controles usando
uma abordagem semelhante à desenvolvida (11) para
simulação completa do motor. Componentes individuais do sistema
deste tipo vale a pena.
