1 Introduction
Navigation maps are managed in the workshop using HDD-Update. The available maps can be downloaded
from central BMW servers. They can then be installed in the vehicle using either ISTA or ISTA/P or a USB
stick. In HDD Update, you can configure the desired source of the navigation maps: USB, DVD or online
download. If "Online" is selected in the installation menu, HDD-Update then processes a prioritised list of
servers - depending on availability - on which the maps are stored redundantly. This manual only describes
the functions relevant to the administrator in detail (Map Copy Console). A description of the functions that
are used by the Service Technician (using ISTA or ISTA/P) can be found in the ISTA or ISTA/P user guide.
The current version of HDD-Update permits the parallel online download of several maps and simultaneous
execution of an additional write or installation operation (saving on USB stick, installation from USB stick or
DVD map installation).

2 System Overview
HDD-Update consists of a server, which runs in the background as a service, as well as a browser-enabled
HTML client. The server also supplies the data to the ISTA and ISTA/P applications.

The filter results are additionally displayed dynamically and clearly in already installed packages.
The language changeover takes place immediately after the corresponding language is selected in the
selection box. 16 languages can be selected: German, English, Chinese, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Czech and Turkish.
The path for the shared storage directory is always displayed. This path is specified in the ISPI Admin Client.
If the system cannot access this path, a fallback path on the local computer is dynamically assigned and
displayed.
If unused files are found in the HDD-Update memory, the message "Also there are... MByte of leftovers
(maybe interrupted installations) found. Please do a cleanup first." is displayed and the user can manually
start a "Cleanup" procedure. Subsequently the unused data is deleted freeing up memory capacity.

In the opened area a diagram and detailed information about disk usage are displayed.
The contents of the HDD-Update memory can be reloaded using the "ReloadSharedStorage" command.
The time-controlled download function allows the download of a map to be scheduled. The Map Copy
Console includes the option to select a specific map which is loaded at a specified time. Several maps can
be selected.
A map can be added to the time-controlled download using the "Install Package" button
If the map is available online, the "Scheduled" button is also provided. Clicking this button gives the user the
option to set the date and time for downloads.
After the times are set, the selected map appears in the top area "Scheduled package downloads". Several
maps can be added to the time-controlled download.

3.4 Filter
The input boxes for filtering the results are integrated in the table headings area. The filtering is done
immediately after inputting the texts or selecting the fields in the corresponding selection lists.
Abbildung 6 Filter
In this area the maps/packages installed in the HDD-Update memory are displayed. The area can be opened
and closed.
In addition to the general package information (type, SGBM ID, name, head unit) there is a selection field for
specifying the map subscription. The subscription function guarantees that a dealer can update his usual
maps in an automated manner. For this purpose it is possible to identify a map that is already downloaded
("subscribed" selection field) in such a way, that when a more up-to-date map is available, an update for the
country and head unit is added to the operation queue for time-controlled downloads. The standard time for
downloads can be specified in the heading field "Subscribed" by clicking on the time criterion.

Action Description
The later-generation head units support the update of navigation data and entertainment data via a
directly connected USB stick. It is therefore possible to carry out an update by connecting the USB
stick with the data package to be installed directly with the head unit of the vehicle. If you have
loaded the relevant data package onto the central memory from an online server or a DVD, for
example, Map Copy Console can be used to copy the required data package onto a USB stick. The
update can subsequently be carried out directly on the vehicle. After clicking, the dialogue for
selecting the target drive and package format is displayed.
The USB stick for the download can be created in two Packaging type versions
1. "unzipped into new directory" → Here a subdirectory is created on the USB stick with the name of
the SGBM ID of the map (for several map downloads on one USB stick, making them easier to
distinguish)
2. "for installation in head unit" → Here the content of the map data is copied directly to the root
directory of the USB stick (this is the only way the head unit can read the map data).

Action Description
The system requirements for the USB stick are: a FAT32 formatted data carrier. The capacity
depends on the map to be used. 32 GByte are recommended
Data packages that are no longer required can be removed again from the central memory using
Map Copy Console, for example to free up memory capacity for other data packages. The user is
asked if a package should be deleted.
Action Description
Package installation
Action Description
If the package is not available for online download, the actions "Online" and "Scheduled" are greyed
out.
A check establishes if the correct data is available on the USB drive. If no package installations are
available the following fault message is displayed:
During the package installation, all other package actions are deactivated. The online downloads
already running continue to be carried out.
DVD installation
A check establishes if the correct data is available on the DVD drive or if a DVD drive is available.
Example message if no DVD drive is available:
During the package installation, all other package actions are deactivated. The online downloads
already running continue to be carried out.
Online
Online download is started immediately. If no faults occur the following window is displayed:
BMW Group Page 11
HDD-Update user guide Version 1711.1 of 14
Action Description
Several online downloads can be carried out in parallel. Other operations are available while online
downloads (saving on USB stick, installation from USB or DVD ) are running.
The MapCopy console also shows downloads that are carried out by other computers in the network.
However the current user can only interrupt the download that was started from their own computer.
In the case of "external" downloads the button is not provided but the computer name of the
download owner is displayed.
When one of the operations saving on USB stick, installation from USB-Stick or DVD is carried out,
the other operations are deactivated during this time. The online downloads already running continue
to be carried out.
