OCTOBER 2021
TISHREI–CHESHVAN
1 5782 BULLETIN
A MESSAGE FROM RABBI JOSHUA FRANKLIN / MAZEL TOV

Are we in Cheshvan or Marchesvan?

We are approaching every Rabbi’s favorite month in the Jewish calendar, Cheshvan,
often referred to as Marcheshvan. During the month of Tishrei, we celebrated,
Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah; but in Cheshvan, which
follows Tishrei, there are no Jewish holidays. After a busy summer season in the
Hamptons followed immediately by a busy month of Tishrei, we now are able to
decelerate into the holiday-free month.

One explanation as to why the month of Cheshvan is also called “Marcheshvan,” is

that “mar” in Hebrew means “bitter.” You might remember from Passover that we
eat “marror,” the bitter herb. Because we don’t have holidays during Cheshvan in
which we rejoice, we jokingly call it the bitter month of Cheshvan. This may be the
etymological root, but as far back as the Mishnah (200 CE), the month was called
“Marcheshvan,” not “Cheshvan.”

One explanation of the etymology is that the word “Mar” in Akkedian means “eight,” and that the name
Marcheshvan refers to the eighth month of Chesvhan. More likely though, the word “mar” might be more
linked to a rare homonym in Hebrew that means “drop.”
‫הֵן ּגֹוי ִם ְּכמַר מִּדְ לִי‬
The nations are like a drop (mar) in a bucket (Isaiah 40:15)

As we enter into the fall season, we find (especially in Israel) that Cheshvan begins the rainy season.
The Mishnah recounts that:
‫ׁשמִים‬
ָ ‫ׁשוָן ׁשֹו ֲאלִין אֶת ַה ְּג‬
ְ ‫ְבמ ְַר ֶח‬
In the month of Marcheshvan we ask God for Rain (Taanit 1:3)

A similar etymological origin looks to the Babylonian month of “Bul (also referred to as the 8th month in 1
Kings 6:36)” which means “floods of water.” According to our tradition the “Mabul,” the great flood of Noah
began in this month. To this end, the name “Marchesvhan” likely has some association with the rains of the
fall. When our outdoor plans continually get rained out, the month might after all feel like a bitter month. For
me, however, I’m going to relish in the sweetness of the quiet.

The month of Chesvhan/Marcheshvan begins on the evening of October 5.
