SONGBOOK + Mike Stoller Jerry Leiber ~ New York City, 1985 Der Leiber and Mike Stoller have been writing songs together for over forty years. Not content to be confined to a specific musical style, they have created enduring classics in a variety of genres including Rhythm & Blues, Pop, Jazz, Cabaret, and — perhaps most notably — Rock & Roll If Elvis Presley was the king of Rock & Roll, then Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were certainly two of the most important powers behind that throne. It’s impossible to think of Elvis without thinking of Hound Dog, Loving You, or Jailhouse Rock —all creations from the pen and piano of Leiber and Stoller. To carry the analogy a step fur- ther, the court jesters of the Rock & Roll kingdom would have to be The Coasters. Leiber and Stoller wrote and produced all of The Coasters’ hits, including Searchin’, Young Blood, Yakety Yak, Charlie Brown, Along Came Jones, Poison Ivy, and Little Egypt, as well as such classics as Down In Mexico, D.W. Washburn, Shoppin’ For Clothes, That Is Rock & Roll, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Framed, and Riot In Cell Block #9. it Elvis and The Coasters are only two of the acts whose careers skyrocketed because of Leiber and Stoller’s creative partnership. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, both born in 1933, began their part- nership in 1950 at the age of 7 when they discovered that they had the same passion for boogie woogie and the blues. By the time they were 20, Leiber and Stoller had seen their earliest songs recorded by such + Mike Stoller, Jerry New York City, 1959 artists as Jimmy Witherspoon, Little Esther, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Little Willie Littlefield, Bull Moose Jackson, Linda Hopkins, Ray Charles, and Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton Leiber and Stoller's series of hits as both songwriters and record pro- ducers began with “Big Mama” Thornton's recording of Hound Dog in 1953. This record and others pro- duced by them caught the attention of executives from Atlantic Records. D 1955, Atlantic signed Leiber and Stoller to the first independent production deal, for- ever changing the course of the record industry. Leiber and Stoller’s songs and productions were constantly on the charts during the next decade. Aside from The Coasters’ many hits, there were Ben E. King's Stand By Me, Spanish Harlem, and | (Who Have Nothing); The Drifters’ On Broadway, Dance With Me, and Drip Drop; as well as La Vern Baker's recording of Saved and Ruth Brown's Lucky Lips. Leiber and Stoller’s produc tions revolutionized the sound of ‘American popular music, Most notably, their use of Latin percus- sion and romantic string sections — in concert with Rhythm & Blues — ushered in the era of Soul music. Stoller, Peggy Lee, Jerry Leiber - A & M Recording Studios, Los Angeles, 1975 During this same period, while Leiber and Stoller were producing The Clovers (Love Potion #9), Jay and the Americans (Only in America), and Chuck Jackson (1 Keep Forgettin’), other artists were making hits with Leiber and Stoller compositions. There was Wilbert Harrison with Kansas City, The Drifters with Ruby Baby and Fools Fall in Love, Peggy Lee with V'm A Woman, The Cheers with Leiber and Stoller, including Love Black Denim Trousers And Me, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, Motorcycle Boots, and of course, Treat Me Nice, Don’t, (You're So Elvis Presley with Hound Dog. Square) Baby, I Don’t Care, Bossa Nova Baby, Santa Claus Is [pte creative writing genius of Back In Town, She’s Not You, and Leiber and Stoller, combined with Trouble. the kinetic energy of Elvis Presley, was the high water mark in the histo- ry of Rock & Roll. With his recording of Hound Dog, Elvis became a household word. Over the next few years Presley would go on to record more than twenty songs written by + Jerry Leiber, Corl Gardner, Mike Stoller, King Curtis, Billy Guy - Coasters recording session at Atlantic Records Studio, New York City, 1959 * Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller - New York City. 1986 In 1969, the team produced the Peggy Lee recording of their compo- sition Is That All There Is? According to music critic Robert Palmer, Is That All There Is? was the song that “...clearly pointed to the direction their new work would take.” It was this change in the cre- ative style of Leiber and Stoller which prompted Palmer to write that "...the Golden Age of Rock & Roll had come to an end.” ber and Stoller have been the recipients of many awards, including their inductions into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 1985, the Record Producers’ Hall of Fame in 1986, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. In February of 1988, Elvis Presley's recording of Hound Dog was placed in the Grammy Hall of Fame. And, in 1991, Leiber and Stolier were pre- sented with the prestigious Founders’ Award by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. + Mike Stoller, Elvis Presley, Jerry Leiber - MGM Studios, Culver City, 1957 Bu the greatest compliment to any songwriter is to have his songs recorded by the best in the busi- ness. In addition to those already mentioned, artists who have recorded songs by Leiber and Stoller include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, James Brown, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Bill Haley and the Comets, Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Johnny Mathis, Joe Williams, Count Basie, John Mellencamp, Lou Rawls, Tom Jones, Edith Piaf, Bobby Darin, Chet Atkins, Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, B.B. King, Otis Redding, and literally hundreds more + Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller - Flanders Film Festival, Ghent, Belgium, 1990 f they had written no other song but Hound Dog, the names of Leiber and Stoller would still have been indelibly written in the history of popular music. However, they didn’t start or stop there. Their con- tributions as songwriters and record producers have been so monumenta that it is impossible to envision what ‘American popular music would be like today without them. ~ Randy Poe ‘CONT Lt ALONG CAME JONES (YOURE SO SQUARE) BABY, | DON'T CARE BLACK DENIM TROUSERS AND MOTORCYCYLE BOOTS BOSSA NOVA BABY ‘CHARLIE BROWN, DANCE WITH ME DONT DOWN IN MEXICO, DRIP DROP D.W.
