PARENT’S INTERVIEW
MY INTERVIEW SUMMARY
In my interview I realised that
To summarise, education has drastically changed
school expectations have really over the decades but the quality of education
changed, now whenever I have a remains more or less the same. In Modern day
education is given more importance in both the
doubt I don’t feel the need to ask genders and both genders receive the same quality
any teacher, I can just google it up of education. The expectation from both the
students and the teachers have changed over the
myself. The competition levels have time and now students are expected to self study
also decreased majorly more and develop research skills at a younger age
GROUP 4-EDITOR EUMIND REPORT
INFRIENDS GRANDPARENTS
when i interviewed my grandmother i found out a lot about their generation and how they lived a much
simpler life than ours.
They had a few rules and school was much stricter than how it is now but when it came to homework it
would be easier and less stressful. When i was taking the interview it was really fun learning about how
even material has changed with the times, our grandparents used to write with slate and chalk. Slate
and chalk is this small white board and a chalk is used to write on it, nowadays we only use notebooks,
pens, our laptops or our ipads. The value of school in their time was extremely high, they valued the
fact that they get to go to school and get good education while in this generation going to school is
looked like a burden. After the interview it struck me that school should still be looked at a boon just
like how it used to be looked at years back, as without it we wouldn’t be able to shape our futures as
well as we are being able to with it.
PARENTS
while interviewing my father i realised that there wasn’t a drastic change in my grandparents
generation and theirs which made me realise the only big change was between my parents
generation and ours. The only changes was the fact that they went from writing with a slate and
chalk to a notebook, and moved from typewriters to computers. The value of school was still
extremely high in this time, my father said that the reason for this was because they didn’t have
any activities like surfing on the web or playing games so they passed their time studying and
actually enjoyed it. This made me come to the conclusion that modernisation in technology
plays a role in the value of school going down.
GRANDPARENTS
When we look at education during our grandparents' time it was very simple. Education then was done without
homework and the kids had no pressure to perform well. The competition was barely there. During those times
there were not many girls who recieved education and school started from 1st grade ( age 5/6 ). When we look
at smaller places like villages, education was done in the open or in temples or the students had to travel to
another town. The teachers then were extremely strict and maintained discipline at all times. Physical
punishment like hitting with a scale was done then. Teachers put an extra effort of extending school time and
making the kids study for a longer period of time. Subject choices were given in 9th grade which were divided
into 3 sections - science, arts, commerce. English, hindi were 2 subjects compulsory then. The quality of
education during those days was not very high since there were mostly hindi medium schools.
PARENTS' INTERVIEW
During our parents time both boys and girls received proper education and
most schools followed a co-ed system but there were a few which were same
gender schools. Then also teachers were very strict and gave physical
punishment. From that time, homework started increasing with a bunch of
projects, worksheets etc. Holiday homework was also given. A subject choice was
given in 11th grade between science and commerce. Pressure to perform well
was there even then. The quality of education then was good I suppose.
Considering the English language was taught from a young age, homework was
given etc.
GRANDPARENTS' INTERVIEW
When I interviewed my grandma, I learnt that different generations do have differences in school and normal
life however there are similarities too. To start she said she had 6 members in the family living together which
includes 4 children and 2 parents. Her school used to start at 9:00am and used to end at 4:pm with two breaks
in the middle. One short break for snacks and a long break for lunch. She started going to school when she
was 6 years old and finished school when she was 16.Transporting to school back then was very hard, my
grandma said that during her time they didn’t have school buses and used traveled by foot, so if your school
was far from your house, you would have to walk the whole distance. The school system during my grandma’s
time wasn’t stressful and they used to have fun and enjoy going to school. The school system also has had
many changes from the first system being CBSE to SSC to IB and IGCSE. My grandma’s school used to follow
the SSC system and the schools used to be single gendered, she went to an all girls school.
PARENTS' INTERVIEW
While interviewing my mom, I realized that my mom's generation was quite different from my grandma’s
generation. My mom used to live with over 10 people in the same house, and her school timings used to be
from 7:00am to 1:00pm with only one break in the middle for lunch. My mom started going to school when
she was 5 years old and finished schooling when she was 15. My mom used to transport to school with the
school bus and she said sometimes she even took her cycle to school. My mom went to an all girls school
however during that time, she said that there were a few schools that were co-ed schools. According to my
mom, education wasn’t too stressful, but there was some competition to excel and do well. She also said that
she had daily homework but she didn’t have projects. She also said that sometimes if students misbehave
they would received punishments such as being sent out of the class to stand, or kneeling down on the
ground.
GRANDPARENTS
When I interviewed my grandfather, I learned that schools were few and they
were at a distance. Means of transportation were less and mostly students went
either by bicycle or on foot. School Life was only from 5 years to 13 years old.
They were attending school during World War 2, he mentioned that as a
historical fact that impressed not only him but the entire world.
MOTHER
After interviewing my mother, at my mother’s time, there were more schools in the
vicinity and even convent education had started, this shows that the quality of education
improved over time. School life was from 5 years to 16 years followed by a bachelor’s
degree. She spoke about the assassination of former prime minister, Indira Gandhi as a
historical event that impressed her since her state was in curfew, and it was the first time
that she had experienced this. Although discipline was imperative when it came to school
life, my mother would enjoy going to school daily.
