MEASUREMENT (DEE10013)
EXPERIMENT 6
Title : Introduction to Power Meter [CLO 2]

Outcomes : Upon completion of this unit, the student should be able to:
i. Construct the connection between power meter and electric circuit
ii. Demonstrate the use Power meter for performing mathematical operations
summation and difference.
iii. Explain the operation of the circuits related.

Equipment / Materials : Laptop & Software Livewire

Theory :

Power Meter is define as meter for measuring the amount of electric power used in watts and
circulating in any electric circuit which measures the power transmitted from source to load in the circuit.

Principles of analogue wattmeter

A variety of wattmeter are available to measure the power in ac circuits. They are generally classified
by names descriptive of their operating principles. Determination of power in dc circuits is almost always done
by separate measurements of voltage and current. However, some of the instruments described will also
function in dc circuits, if desired.
The simplest type is an ammeter whose scale is calibrated watts. This device can provide satisfactory
indications of power generated or consumed if:
a) The line voltage is known and varies little under any conditions where an indication is needed.
b) The circuit uses direct current (DC), or alternating current (AC) where the load is purely resistive.

Procedure (Software):

1. Draw the circuit below using Livewire.

(Gallery-Power Supply-Battery, Gallery-Passive Components-Resistor, Gallery-Measuring-Wattmeter)

2. With the input voltage, E=10V. Record the total output power and output power for each resistor
(load) in Table 1.
3. Interchange the input voltage, E=15V dc power supply. Record the total output power and output
power for each resistor (load) in Table 2.

Discussion
1. State the definition for power meter.
A Power Meter is one of the most useful and simple instruments to measure electrical power when no
deeper analysis of the measured data is required. It measures the voltage (V) and current (A) and derives
from these the most important power results
2. Construct wattmeter connection for power measurement

Conclusion
At the end of this experiment what I can determine is the wattmeter is an instrument for measuring
the electric active power in watts of any given circuit. Furthermore, we also can gain a piece of new
knowledge and skill. For example, is in this lab we are given two types of battery voltage which
are 10V and 15V. Not only that 15V is higher than 10V in the battery. By using Livewire Simulation
Software, we have to combine each resistor with a wattmeter and it is a bit confusing because a lot
of connections are made. Not only that, each resistor value is different and the result in the
wattmeter getting a different value because the resistor and value of the battery are not the same in
circuits 1 and 2. In conclusion, I admit this experiment achieved its goal to make students
understand.
