PHYSICAL SCIENCE
ACTIVITY NO. 1
A MODEL OF AN EXPANDING UNIVERSE

I – OBJECTIVE :
a. Make a model of an expanding universe.

II – MATERIALS:
a. balloon (any color except red or black)
b. marker pens (red and black)
c. tape measure

III – PROCEDURE:
a. Inflate the balloon( blow the balloon with air until it expand half
-way)

b. Using a tape measure, measure the diameter of the half-inflated balloon.

c. Draw red dots on the surface of the balloon about two inches apart starting with the
central dots. ( The central dot can be located on the base of the inflated balloon)

d. Locate the central dot and encircle it with black marker.

e. Choose 10 dots _____ some far and some near the central dot.

f. Label these dots A to I or 1– 10

g. Measure the distances of dots A to I from the central dots. Record these distances in
column 2 of your data table.

h. Inflate again the balloon until it stretch tight, then knot the balloon to avoid the air in
coming out or escaped.

i. Measure again the distances of your dots starting again from the central dots.

j. Record your results in Column 3 of the data table.

k. Subtract the data in Column 2 from the data in column 3

l. Record your resulting data in Column 4

m. Divide the data in Column 3 from the data in Column 2.

47

n. Record your data results in Column 5

IV - QUESTIONS
1. What does blowing of the balloon represent?

It represents the expansion of the universe, as the balloon was inflated, the distances between the
center dot and the other dots increased. “I” represents the distance when the balloon was still half
inflated, “II” then represents the distance when the balloon was fully inflated which made the
distances of the dots increase.

2. Compare the data in column 2 with the data in column 4. Explain your answer.

Column 2 represents the data of the distances of the dots form the center dot when fully inflated
while column 4 represents the data of distance change between the half inflated balloon data and
the fully inflated balloon data. This shows the increase of distances of the dots from the center
dot, this is from the data of the half inflated and the fully inflated balloon.

3. Compare the set of data in column 2 with the set of data in column 5. Explain your answer.

Column 2 represents the data of the distances of the dots from the center dot when fully inflated
while column 5 represents the data of the distance of dots from column 3 divided to column 2.
This shows the decrease of distances of dots form the center dot.

V – CONCLUSION:

In conclusion, this experiment represented the expansion of the universe, the universe represents
the balloon while the non center dots represents the galaxies. This experiment also shows that the dots
farthest from the central dot appeared to move greater distance than the dots closer to the central dot.
This explains that even though all dots moved at the same amount of time, the farthest dots must have
been moving much faster.
