Assignment 2

Date: August 27, 2021 Time: 08:00-08:50 AM

1. A square cross section (side=150 mm) steel bar (Sut =600MPa) has a hot rolled finish.
The stress concentration factor is 1.60 and the notch sensitivity factor is 0.75. For the
reliability of the 99.9%, what is the endurance limit for the fully reversed bending of 100
MPa? How many cycles of life can be expected for the bar?

2. A rotating steel shaft (machined and Sut =690MPa) supported on ball bearings A and D
and loaded by nonrotating force F = 6.8kN is shown below. Find out whether the shaft
will have finite life or infinite life, if all fillets have 3 mm radius.

3. Prove that for a non-rotating circular cross-section shaft A95 representing the portion of
cross-sectional area that is stressed between 95% and 100% of the maximum stress is
0.0105 d2 , where d is the diameter of the shaft.

4. A steel rod is subjected to a tensile load that varies from 60 to 120kN. The material has
Sut =586MPa and yield strength of 310Mpa. Find the diameter of the rod taking factor of
safety as 2 by using (i) Goodman criterion (ii) Soderberg criterion (iii) Modified Goodman
line criterion. (Given: Surface finish factor =0.85)

5. A non-rotating shaft, shown below, is being considered on a cold drawn square profile
with machined groove. The used material is steel (Sut =400 Mpa) and the reliability of
the components should be 99%. Estimate the endurance limit for the shaft and the
allowable bending moment using a safety factor of 5.0. Stress concentration related
data is provided on the last page.
