1. Sentence elements.

A sentence may alternatively be seen as comprising five units called ELEMENETS of sentence (or, as
we shall see below, clause) structure: subject, verb, complement, object, adverbial, here abbrevi -
ated as S, V, C, O, A.

2. Parts of a sentences.

2.1. Subject

The subject includes the noun that is performing the action described in the predicate. The subject
of sentence has a close general relation to “ what is being discussed ”, the “ theme ” of the sentence,
with normal implication that something new ( the predicate ) is being said about a “ subject “ that
has already been introduced in an earlier sentence.Furthermore, the subject is the part of the
sentence that changes its position as we go from statement to question.

2.2. Predicate.

The predicate of a sentence is the part that modifies the subject of a sentence or clause in some
way. The predicate specifies what the subject is or does or tells what is done to the subject. Because
the subject is the person, place or thing that a sentence is about, the predicate must contain a verb
explaining what the subject does.

3. The 9 parts of speech:

3.1. Noun:

Refers to the words or phrases that represent a person, a place, a thing or activity, or a quality or
idea. E.g: John, room, question...

3.2. Adjective:

Adjective describe nouns. E.g: happy, steady, new...

3.3. Adverb:

Adverbs give information about verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Adverbs tell us how, where,
when, something happen or is done. Adverb can be a single word ( sometiomes ) or a phrases ( from
time to time ). E.g: steadily, completely, really, very..

3.4. Verb:

Refer to the words or group words that describe an action,experience or express a state of being.
E.g: search, grow, play, be, have, do
3.5. Demostrative:

Demostrative pronouns and demostrative adjectives. E.g; this, that, those,these.

3.6. Pronoun:

A proun is used in place of a noun in a sentence. A pronoun may take the place of a person, place or
thing.E.g: that, who...

3.7. Preposition:

A Preposition combines with a noun or pronoun to form the phrase that tells something about
another word in a sentence. E.g: of, at, in, without...

3.8. Conjunction:

A conjunction joins together single words or group of words in a sentence. E.g: and, then, athough...

3.9. Interjection:

Interjection expresses a strong feeling or emotion. E.g: oh, ah, ugh, phew...
