Introduction-
A domed musculotendinous sheet.
Separates the thoracic and abdominal cavities.
• Thoracic surface: Superior surface.
- convex on right and left sides (Summit = Cupolae)
- depressed in the middle
• Abdominal surface:
- concave, inferior surface.
ORIGIN –
Costal origin -
• Arises from the inner surfaces of the lower
six ribs and their costal cartilages
interdigitating with transversus abdominis.
Vertebral origin –
Left crus:
- Arises from the corresponding parts of the upper two
lumbar vertebrae.
- Medial margin of two crura form tendinous arc across the
front of the aorta called the median arcuate ligament.
INSERTION-
A. Large or Main
Openings in the

B. Small Openings
in the diaphragm
1. Vena caval Opening:
-Situation: Lies in the central tendon at junction of median and right
leaflets at the level of T8, 2.5 cm right to middle line
- Shape: Quadrilateral
- Structures passing:
i) Inferior vena cava.
ii) Branches of the right phrenic nerve.
iii) Few lymph vessels from the liver.
- Sliding Hernia
