Mechanical Workshop Practice 1 & DJJ10022
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Measure finished product using appropriate measurement instruments (P3, PLO5)
2. Perform fitting, welding and machining works according to Standard Operational Procedure (SOP). (P4,
PLO5)
3. Demonstrate an understanding of professional ethics, responsibilities and norms of
engineering practices according to the workshop safety regulation. (A3, PLO6)

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The word fitting means to fix a thing at its proper place. In the fitting workshop students are taught how to fix
material in the engraved piece which is already made with very accurate dimension. It is fully equipped with
bench drilling machine, work benches with bench vices, measuring tools and various cutting tools.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

To practice the safety procedures in the workshop and perform ability to operate fitting work with various hand
tools and drilling machine, marking tools, measuring and testing tools.

3.0 EQUIPMENTS
3.1 Steel ruler 3.9 Vernier caliper
3.2 Scriber 3.10 Marking out table
3.3 Drill bit (5mm) 3.11 Vernier height gauge
3.4 Cool chisel 3.12 L-square
3.5 Hacksaw 3.13 Center punch
3.6 Tap and die 3.14 Metal file
3.7 Hammer 3.15 Anvil
3.8 Bench vise
4.0 PROCEDURES

4.1 File and remove the unwanted material according to design requirements.
4.2 Then, starts filing the plate until one of the edge become 90 degrees. To test the perpendicularity of
the edge, used L-Square.
4.3 Draw horizontal and vertical lines by using the height gauge scriber. The lines are drawn by
referring to the T-Gauge and U Gauge technical drawing.
4.4 Next, mark three points as shown in the technical drawing by using center punch.
4.5 Follow by drilling the three points by using machine.
4.6 After drilling, remove the unwanted parts using hacksaw to get the T-Gauge or U-Gauge shape.
4.7 Using tap and die, groove screw threads the holes.
4.8 Finally, smooth the T-Gauge or U-Gauge surface by using metal file and sand paper
