Analysis

1. Where did you learn about these practices?

I learned about the abovementioned practices at school and at home.

2. Are you still applying these practices up to this day?

Yes, of course I am applying each practice up to this day because it

became my habit and it will always be part of daily living. In fact, those are
only few of my health and hygiene practices.

3. From your list, what practices do you consider a myth? Why?

Among all those practices I have listed, only letter (f): “cutting nails
each day only during daytime” is the practice that I consider a myth because
my parents and grandparents told me that when I cut my fingernails and
toenails during the night or before I go to bed, it means that I am actually
wishing to shorten my life which will turn out that I will die first before my
parents does.
4. From your list, what practices do you consider a fact? Why?

As matter of fact, all the practices I have listed are true in my own
understanding and belief. It is because washing myself and staying clean can
kill and remove illness-causing bacteria from my body. It lowers the risk for
diseases. I consider my practices as good hygiene because it was taught at
schools and at my home. The only thing that is not a fact about it, is not doing
the practices as a daily routine.

Title: Risky Behaviors and Adolescents

Activity

1. List down all the information you know about the following:

a. Drug abuse

- street name of drugs, signs and effects

 Alcohol - upset your digestion, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting,

diarrhoea and indigestion and development of chronic diseases

 Cocaine – considered to have highly addictive substance that is prohibited in

the Philippines because it damages health and well-being

 Inhalants – inhaling solvents such as rugby or glues can starve the body of

oxygen and force the heart to beat irregularly and more rapidly

 Marijuana – it affects the pleasure-seeking part of the brain when inhaled,

some dries it off to make smoke out of it and it causes euphoria, an intense

feeling of happiness and excitement, provides brain damage such as impaired

coordination, and paranoia

 Steroids – can be taken through injections usually by athletic men during

events because for them it makes them feel powerful and energetic and adds

muscles and strength, but it affects the activity of immune system, results to

kidney problems or failure, liver damage and tumors, enlarged heart and

increased risk of blood clots.

Analysis

1. Where did you learn about this information?

During highschool, senior high school and even on college, this type of

information is being introduced to us through a symposium and health awareness

activities either at school or barangay.

2. What do you think are some situations where introduction to drugs and sexual

risks among adolescents could come in?

As for my own understanding, having peers with experience of drugs and sexual

risks can be a factor. You can be influenced out of curiousity and also, you will turn

to tolerate peer-pressure just to belong. Also, some situations such as experiencing

stress, it forces your mind on choosing drinking alcohols to feel numb about

everything.

3. What could you do to avoid being involved in drug use and sexually

transmitted infections?

First and foremost, attending symposiums and health awareness activities can be

of good help to warn myself and be educated. I should always keep in mind that

early use of drugs increases a person's chances of becoming addicted. Becoming

addicte can result to high-risk sexual activity, unsafe sex and unplanned pregnancy.

Furthermore, STIs can avoided through knowing its modes of transmission and

applying preventions that are applicable to my sexual activity. Educating myself is

the best key to avoid being involved in drug use and sexually transmitted infections.

4. What are areas of concern that you can openly discuss with any or both of

your parents? Why?

I only discuss my health state with my mother. I can openly discuss my health

state when having troubles during menstruation, experiencing health problems such

as body pains. I also aware my mother when the time I felt like I have hard circles

inside my breasts and I shared with her my breasts mass condition so she supported

me on having check-ups, guiding me and giving advices to avoid worsening my

situation.

5. What are areas of concern that you cannot openly discuss with any or both of

your parents? Why?

Raised by educated and strict parents, I cannot discuss my personal life like

having a boyfriend. Although we don’t engage on sexual intercourse, I still cannot

deny the fact that my father or my mother would tolerate me. Since I can’t openly

discuss some things like this, I need my friends and the power of knowledge to help

myself be aware of my actions and be protected from unsafe activities.

APPLICATION

Write a Key Message to Adolescents that will impact the quality of their health in
adulthood when they assume new roles and responsibilities related to work, career,
family and parenthood.

During adolescence, young people begin to

explore alternative health behaviors including:
Smoking, drinking alcohol, drug use, sexual
intimacy, and violence. As a human being, we are
born with responsibilities which we cannot escape.
So it’s better we grow into a responsible
adolescent and accept them whole-heartedly
rather than complaining for difficulties. In order to
become responsible, you should start at your home. Do household chores often and
help your parents with willingness. Be an instant support or assistance for your
parents’ hard day. Don’t miss out the chances of receiving advices from elders. They
may not be always right but do the best for you. The elders have more experiences
and they only share it when they know they learned something from it. Being
responsible is being balance at everything. Do not misuse your freedom. It does not
mean that you are in legal age, you are already allowed to drink alcoholic drinks. It
will always be your choice. You might want to choose for your betterment and avoid
alcohols and drug abuse. Avoid doig wrong deeds because we, as adolescents, are
expected to be responsible to our decisions and actions ince we already know what
is right and what is wrong. We should always keep in mind that if the peers are not
healthy anymore, learn to say no and keep yourself away from temptations that
might ruin you work, career and your well-being. Always be thankful if you have a
complete family. Learn to understand them and connect with them through any
means. It can be done when you decide to have dinner together, or occassional
conversations. It is your own decision if you want to have answers, you seek for
possible ways to find it. Communication is a must especially when we interact with
other people, even at home, with our family members. Learn to be independent and
grab opportunities that will challenge your limits as long as you are happy on what
you are doing. In meeting new things, we should always be at ease and control our
emotions to accept evrything easily. Do not let yourself forget about God who owns
you. If you are facing such difficult times, think positively and remember that prayer
is the most powerful weapon to make things easier to handle.
