Unit 16: JHS worksheet

Why Worksheets?
Help students achieve the goal of the lesson.
They are supplementary materials to the main lesson
Can either be printed or digital
Always check the worksheet and know how to use the worksheet and how it will be
implemented into the lesson before using it in class

Worksheets will most likely have little to no instruction in either english or japanese
You will have to visually demonstrate how to complete the worksheet to the students

Make our own original Worksheets?

You can customize the worksheet to match the student’s interest.
ALT can really add value by making their own worksheets since JTEs will be super busy.

Steps: For “ABC” template

1 identify target language and think about the context where we use it in daily lives

2 “ABC” template is communicative type of worksheet 15-20 mins, make sure it matches the
lesson’s goals, task, and time

3 modify to include student’s interests.

Part A: Fill in the blank
Part B: Fill in response using target language
Part C: Classmate interaction, they use/practice the target language and record answers down

4 Make sure to have a spot for students to write down class/name. Have target language
somewhere on the worksheet. Add in pictures for visuals.

Demonstrating worksheets:
Give the worksheets meaning, make it appealing
Make sure the worksheet is visible for the entire class at the front
Don’t hand out worksheets first. Save the worksheet for after the demonstration
Show how to do the worksheet, avoid talking too much.
Assume all students do not know how to do the worksheet
Set clear rules, especially time limits. Section off the different sections.

Feedback:
Telling students what they need to do to be able to do what they need to do.
Be very simple with the instructions and make it clear for all students to understand.
Have students interact with each other if they are not engaging or talking.
Be reactive and proactive to students energy and engagement level.
Can also use nonverbal gesture to get answers from students. Have them raise their hands if
they are not comfortable with talking.
Need to tell students what they need to do. Give them direct instructions and make it clear what
you want them to do.
Explain that Students do not know anything or know how to do the worksheets before.
Might sound silly but do it anyways.
Japanese students NEED direct instruction or they won’t know what to do. That is just how they
were raised and their social norm.
