QUESTION 1

Having completed your first year of teaching, with its ups and downs, you are planning for
great success in your second year. You want to prevent behaviour problems by doing what
effective teachers do. Explain FIVE (5) methods on how you want to increase students
engaged time (or time on task) effectively. Provide one example for each method.

From my perspective, the five methods on how I want to increase students engaged
time effectively are by introducing interesting and exciting lessons, maintaining smooth
transition accordingly, maintaining group focus in the classroom, random calling students
during lesson and utilizing overlapping skill.

Firstly, is I would introduce interesting and exciting lessons in class. Generally, as

teachers, we are advised to create strong lesson plans before we teach according to it to our
students. Teachers must be creative to come up with potential lessons and activities in the
classroom in grasping the students’ focus and attention. Example, during lesson, I could
introduce educational games regarding to targeted lesson, whether with hands-on materials
or using online preferences. Other example is that, during in class, I could introduce a
specific period for some storybook reading session with the students. With this method, the
classroom environment would not be too dull and boring for the students.

Secondly, is I would try to maintain a smooth transition when I am teaching in class.

By having planned classroom activities, as teachers, we must make sure every activity
planned is commenced in order and must be related to one another. Smooth transitions help
to ease the students with the appropriate pace of grasping the knowledge among them as
well as the better understanding in the specific lesson taught. Example, by not having
smooth transition during lesson, I would be seemed to teach meaningless knowledge while
my students would react blurry, bored and they would easily lose focus in class.

Thirdly, is I would always maintain the group focus in my classroom. The purpose of
group focus is the opportunity for the teachers to observe and evaluate their students’
attention and focus on the lesson from time to time. Example that could navigate in

maintaining the group focus is by using choral responses from the students. Fourthly, is I
would randomly call students from time to time by questioning them regarding the lesson
taught. For me, I think this is one of the most crucial method to keep on track on individuals’
attention in class. Other than the fact that the students would always stay alert in class, in
case their names were suddenly called, I as the teacher, could also evaluate the individuals’
current performances and such as well as examine if he/she needs extra attention or assist
from time to time for the targeted lessons. Example, I would try to reach out to low-achieving
students and ask them about the use of correct past tense for the word ‘walk’. By having
group focus and randomly calling students, I am sure that these would minimise disruptions
happening in class.

Lastly, is I would utilize overlapping skills during my lessons. As teachers, we are

normalised with multi-tasking the classroom. An efficient teacher would portray his or her
professionalism in teaching by having good handling in preventing the behaviour problems
or little interruptions occurring in class while manage to continue the lessons or activities
smoothly with the rest of the students. This would result in a great classroom management
while the students are in good control with the authority of the teacher. Example, I as the
teacher in class, managed the class clown by imposing his or her time out and afterwards
continues the lesson smoothly with the rest of the students, without longer interruptions from
me as the teacher in wasting time in my remaining class period.

Imagine walking into your first day of teaching. What would build your confidence to teach?
Explain FIVE (5) qualities that you should possess and how you apply them in your
own classroom.

Walking into my first day of teaching, the five qualities that I should possess are that I
have to always motivate myself in creating a cheerful and engaging environment in my class,
remind myself to organize a good time management between me and the students, knows
and meets the students’ needs, engage with professional development and lastly, I have to
always accept criticism from others regarding how I teach.

Firstly, is that I would motivate myself in creating a cheerful and engaging

environment in class. I have to prepare some sense of humour to myself in enhancing the
mutual relationship with my students in class. Preparing effective lesson planning would also
help me to come up with ideas that engages with students’ minds and imaginations while I
could preach them the targeted lesson needed. The application for this quality could be
coming up with group contingency games in class or even just a simple storytelling among
the students. With this quality, it effects greatly in my classroom as the students would not
be bored and lose focus with only filled empty lectures by me and the students would remain
active with the activities that applied with interaction with other students and application with
the lesson taught.

Secondly, is that I would organize a good time management between me and my

students. Other than planning amazing and interesting activities in class, I have to also plan
out the amount of needed within every activity commenced. Focusing only the fun activities
would let my teaching objectives to fail as well as the students might not even grasp
anything about the lesson taught. The application of this quality is that I would spare myself
the time for excitement during lesson using the Premack Principle. In order for the students
to have fun, they have to manage to understand the lesson taught for the day, like the
correct use of tenses, the use of countable and uncountable nouns and such.

Thirdly, is that I have to know and meet exactly what my current student needs. I
definitely can not gain what my students need on the first day of teaching, but by developing
conscious mutual relationship with them as a teacher, I would probably slowly get in touch
with what they need and this is most certainly would help myself as a teacher, to assist them
well. The application for this quality might take quite a while yet if I knew what my students
needed, I would always have my extra attention on them and help assist them if they need
any help with the certain topic. If some of my students are shy, I would not hesitate to

evaluate up close with them or maybe ask if they have the extra time during outside class
hours to help them at ease and personal.

Fourthly, as a newbie teacher, it is my responsibility to engage myself with

professional development from time to time. For me, professional development is important
to enhance the credibility of myself to become a real authoritative teacher in class and
knows the rules on how to manage the students in my class more effectively. For this
professional development, I would have to attend courses outside of school and take note
every information needed to enhance myself to be a better teacher. The after effect of this
quality is that I could build more self-esteem to myself as a teacher to teach my students as
well as I would be more independent in repairing the teaching and managing skills according
to the knowledge gained attending to these professional development courses.

Lastly, I have to always be open-minded to accept criticism by others. Not everyone

is perfect especially if you are the newbie teacher in school. Accepting criticism from others
especially if they’re your senior teachers are something that I should cope within me and
take the positivity as much as possible from them. For me, criticism is something that puts
you down and degrades you from being a normal teacher. It is a spectrum for self-reflection
and motivation in evaluating how well you teach for the time being. For the application of this
quality, the criticisms received to me would help me well to repair my teaching skills in class
as well as building the courage inside of me to be a better teacher for my students.
