1.0 Applicable Elements of Standard:

ASTM A 370–17a
ASTM E 384- 16

2.0 SCOPE:
A diamond indenter in the form of right pyramid with square base and with
specified angle between opposite faces at vertex is forced in to the surface of
the test piece and diagonals of the indentation left in the surface after removal
of the test force are measured.

Brinell / Rockwell hardness tester.

Equipment MAK:

3.0 Procedure:
1. Refer customer’s letter for material specifications.

2. Clean the sample properly and polish it and ensure that test piece is
free from foreign material and scales.

3. Verify the machine with standard test block.

4. Check that Diamond indenter is in place and make sure that it is
properly secured. Put the machine ON and put ON the lamp. Focus
the specimen to get clear image. Apply the load, hold it for 10-15
seconds, release the load and then measure the two diagonals of the
indentations. If the focus is disturbed, bring it back in focus and then
measure. Take the average of the two diagonals and read the

hardness values from the appropriate chart.

5. If it is found OK (within + 3%) proceed for the testing of the actual

samples in the same manner.

6. Minimum of three reading are to be taken and reported. If major

variations are observed, more numbers of readings are taken.

7. Enter the results in hardness register.

8. Note down the reading in Test Record.

9. Checking of standard block is required after testing of 20 samples.
