1. General overview
1.1. Purpose
For measuring there is no need to connect the system with a computer, but later the
results can be transmitted over to the computer. To do this the measuring system is
provided with special computer software, which also allows test data to be processed,
measurement reports prepared and the measuring system to be configured.
3
IRI sensors installed on the shock absorber columns of the front wheels of a
vehicle. Depending on the configuration the system is provided with one or
two IRI sensors, which are meant for measuring IRI values in wheel-paths of a
vehicle;
the GPS antenna installed to the roof of the vehicle. The antenna is necessary
to get accurate GPS coordinates during measurement.
4

2. Installation of equipment
2.1. IRI sensors
First, the batteries must be inserted into the sensor(s). See section 2.2 for
instructions.
The most important factor for taking correct measurement is that IRI sensors should
be rigidly fixed in relation to the wheel. To ensure this IRI sensor is installed with the
help of a stainless steel hose clip on the shock absorber column of the front wheel,
under the spring socket.
The groove on the side of the sensor must be facing up towards the suspension spring
(see pictures below). Orientation of the sensor around the column is not important.
Ensure that there would be no contact between the sensor and the rim and tyre – there
must be a gap of a minimum of 1 cm between them. As the wheel is often quite close
to the column, the sensor can be installed in the driving direction in the front or back
of the shock absorber column or to the engine side (see the photo in which a sensor is
installed in front of the column). In addition it has to be checked that there is no
contact between the bolt and end of the fastening clip of the sensor and the tyre. If
necessary, cut the fastening clip shorter after the clip has been tightened.
UP
6
Attention! It is recommended to periodically check (once a year before calibration) if
the fastening clip is tight and that the sensor has not moved from its correct position.
Also, make sure that the fastening clip has no significant damage or corrosion and if
necessary, replace the fastening clip.
If the batteries are almost empty, there will be a warning text displayed on the screen
of control block along with a warning sound. Batteries should then be replaced. If the
batteries are completely empty, IRI results will be not shown during measurement.
3) Remove batteries.
The batteries are tightly held in the sensor and require some force to remove them.
Use a screwdriver or other suitable tool to push one end of the battery up. A small L-
shaped hex key can be used as a lever, put the shorter end of the hex key under the
battery and push it up. If one end of the battery is out, you can easily pull the battery
out.
7
4) Insert new batteries.
It is highly recommended to use Energizer Lithium batteries. If other batteries
(alkaline) are used, the batteries may not last as long as lithium batteries. Also,
alkaline batteries have a higher chance of leakage that may damage the sensor.
The polarity of the markings on the bottom of the battery holder must match the
battery polarity. The “+” sign on the battery must go to the “+” marking on the battery
holder. First, push in the “+” end of the battery. To get the other end into the holder,
you must bend the “-” contact of the holder slightly outward to allow the battery to
slide in. Make sure the battery is completely in the holder.
8
2.3. Control block
The control block is fixed to the windshield of the vehicle using a suction cup mount.
The windshield mount has a threaded connector that is attached to the back of the
control block (see picture below).
The radio antennas are connected to the sides of the control block with connectors. If
the antenna comes loose, tighten the locking nut on the antenna using moderate force.
Do not use a wrench or other tools to tighten the nut as it may put too much force on
the connector and might damage it.

Attention! When connecting the cables to the control block, tighten the locking nuts
so that they would not disconnect during measurement. If you disconnect a cable,
reconnect the dust cap to the socket.
9
2.4. GPS antenna
The GPS antenna is connected to the control block (see section 2.3). Make sure to
tighten the nut of the connector using only your hands. Do not use a wrench or other
tools to tighten the nut as it may put too much force on the connector and might
damage it.
The antenna is mounted onto the roof of the vehicle. It has a strong magnet in its base
so it will stay on the roof without additional fixing. Place the antenna approximately
over the driver’s seat. The cable is led from the cabin to the roof through the window
of the vehicle or through other openings in the vehicle. Use cable clips or other cable
management equipment to fix the cable inside the car.
If the antenna cable is too short to reach from the control block to the roof, an antenna
extension cable can be used. Connect one end of the extension cable to the control
block and the other end to the antenna connector.
Attention! Use the antenna extension cable only if there is a need for it. Longer cable
may reduce the accuracy of the GPS coordinates.
The control block can be powered from a USB port or from the additional
supply/expansion socket.
If using the USB port, use the included USB cable. Connect the Mini-USB plug of the
cable to the control block. Connect the other end to a powered USB port, for example
a cigarette lighter to USB adapter or a laptop computer.
If using the additional supply/expansion socket, connect the power cable to the
control block socket and the cigarette lighter plug to the cigarette lighter socket of the
car.
Attention! Make sure that the car cigarette lighter socket is clean and the contacts are
not corroded, otherwise the power may be interrupted and the control block may
switch itself off. If needed, replace the cigarette lighter socket of the car.
10
3. Measuring
3.1. Preparation for measuring
Before carrying out the first measuring after the system has been installed on a
vehicle, the measuring system must be calibrated (see section 5):
Before starting measuring the control block must be connected to a computer, the
settings of the system have to be reviewed in the computer program and the
measuring plan has to be configured (see section 4.8).
Additionally the user can set the measuring length and the pre-course length:
Measuring stops automatically when the predetermined measuring length has
been driven.
The purpose of the pre-course is to measure the road length before measuring
IRI. This can be used to start measuring from the certain road length of some
determined point (beginning of a road, cross-road, etc.).
The configuration of the settings and the test plan will be permanently stored in the
control block even if there is a power interruption.
11
there should be a sufficiently long road course before the road course to be
measured to achieve the needed measuring speed and sufficiently long road
course after the end of the road course for braking.
The maximum length of a single test is limited to 325 kilometres. After this maximum
distance has been measured, the measuring stops automatically and a new test must be
started in order to measure any further.
Measuring with the measuring system is performed via the control block. The control
block is provided with a graphic display with a backlight and four buttons.

If the device is also connected to the computer via USB, an additional symbol USB
will be displayed on the upper row.
The GPS status shows “GPS fix acquired” if the GPS coordinates have been received.
If the GPS coordinates are not yet available, the text “Acquiring GPS fix...” is shown
instead. Measurement cannot be started until GPS fix is acquired and the text “GPS
fix acquired” is shown.
12
Thereafter a vehicle is accelerated on sufficiently long runway until the required
measuring speed is achieved.
To start measuring IRI press START and the following is displayed on the screen:

direction (F=forward, B=backward)
To keep the speed the speed shown on the screen of the device should be followed,
since the speedometer of a vehicle is usually not very accurate. If possible adaptive
cruise control of a vehicle should be used.
Measuring is stopped when the course ends and STOP is pressed. The device
switches over to an interim regime, measuring is interrupted and the vehicle can be
driven to the start point of a next pre-course. An interim regime screen is displayed:

The speed can be reduced and the vehicle can be turned around only after the interim
regime screen has been displayed.
If measuring is also done in opposite direction, then before starting measuring the
required measuring speed has to be achieved. To start new measuring press
START.
13
For your knowledge! Pressing STOP button when the device is in interim regime
stops the test and the following screen will be displayed:
Now the road course just measured can be deleted, if needed, the test can be ended or
continued. To continue the test from this screen press START. Now the next road-
course is measured.
When the test is completed (all road courses to be measured according to the
measuring plan have been measured) and STOP button has been pressed, the screen
will display brief data of the test with average values:

IRI F: r 2.4 Average IRI value in forward direction.
IRI B: r 2.7 Average IRI value in backward direction.
This display remains on the screen until STOP button is pressed again.
To enter the menu of a control block press ENTER. The menu is with a circular
design and there are two buttons to navigate in it:
SELECT button is used to select the next item in the menu or sub-menu.
Long press on the button cancels an item waiting to be confirmed or is used to
leave the menu.
ENTER is used to enter the menu or a menu item or activates the selected
item.

sun is shining the screen should be lighter. Press ENTER to switch between
“Bright” and “Dark”.
15
4. Data processing
The device allows transmitting the test data stored in its memory to the computer via
USB, storing data in the computer and preparing reports in MS Excel format with
special software.
The computer software also enables the settings of the measuring device to be
changed.
To read data there must be at least WINDOWS XP with Service Pack 3 and at least MS
OFFICE 2003 installed in the computer. The software needed for data processing is
stored on a USB flash drive, which is included in the delivery and which has to be
installed in the computer.
To install the software from the USB flash drive, open the flash drive “IRIMETER”
from My Computer and run setup.exe. For successful installation of the software
Windows Installer 3.1 and .NET Framework 4.0 must already be installed in the
computer. Otherwise Windows will try installing these automatically from the
internet. If there is no internet connection, the required installation kits must be run
from the USB flash drive.
After successful installation the data processing software will start automatically. To
start the program a sub-section IRIMETER will be created in the START menu of
Windows.
Generally the computer installs USB drivers for IRIMETER-2 automatically when the
IRIMETER-2 is connected for the first time. If driver installation fails and
IRIMETER-2 is not found after pressing button "Find device" in computer software,
the driver must be installed manually. Open IRIMETER-2 flash drive and run “USB
driver\CDM_Setup.exe”. Follow the onscreen instruction to install the driver. The
computer must be restarted after the driver has been installed.
In order to read the measurement data the control block must be connected with a
computer via USB cable and it must be switched on. The device is ready for data
exchange, when USB icon is displayed next to the date.
16
The memory of the device can be cleared by pressing the button “Clear
memory”.
Attention! Reading data from the device takes some time, approximately 1 second
per 100 km of data. The time may be longer if the computer has other processes
running. If for example the device has measured 800 km worth of data, it will take
about 8 seconds to read the data to computer. The control block and the computer
program will not respond to any button presses while data is being read.

„Average“– calculates average values of measurement results. After the
button is pressed, user can choose the tests to be averaged. In order to
calculate the averages, the button „Average“ must be pressed again, after
which a new test is added to the list with the averaged results. Average values
are only calculated in those measurement points that are represented in all the
chosen tests. Because of that, the distance values of the tests to be averages
should be equal, otherwise the averaging may not function properly.
The new averaged test will have the start time and test number equal to the
first test that was selected. The direction of the averaged test will be
automatically set based on the directions of selected tests.

A graph or a table is displayed for the chosen test and range. Near the axes of the
graph, the user can change which type of data is displayed. The maximum of two
different types of data can be shown on the vertical axes. The horizontal axis always
shows the distance values. The same data that is shown on the graph will be displayed
as a table if the tab “Table” is selected instead of tab “Graph”.
It is also possible to select the displayed data range with the computer mouse. Move
the cursor to the desired starting point and press and hold the left mouse button. Now

4.4. Creating Excel measurement reports
The bottom of the window includes the tools necessary to create a measurement
reports. Pressing the button “Export report” opens selections to choose the tests and
the types of data to be exported to the report. Mark the necessary tests and data types
and press the button “Export”. After that, a new window opens that allows the user to
choose the location/name of the report file. The report file is automatically opened
after its creation.
The button “Export only chosen range” is used to create a report that only includes
the range that is currently displayed on the graph/table. The types of data sent to the
report must be also defined when using this method.
The “interval” value on the bottom right of the window defines the distance step used
in the report. Possible choices include 5, 20, 25 and 100 meters. If longer than 5 meter
interval is selected, the results will be averaged for the interval. For example, if 25
meter interval is selected, each measurement value in the report is a calculated
average of five (5x5m=25m) measurement points.
The distance values in the report correspond to the end point of each measurement.
For example, the IRI value shown in distance of 5 meters is actually the IRI of 0-5
meters. The same is true for other distance intervals.
The “Units” field on the bottom right of the window selects what unit system is used
in the report. Possible options are metric system and imperial system.
Units with metric system:
o Distance: meters
o IRI: mm/m
o Speed: km/h
Units with imperial system:
o Distance: feet
o IRI: in/mi
o Speed: mph
Attention! For preparing a report Excel macros will be used, for this the security level
of macros must be set to Medium (from Excel menu Tools > Macro > Security), after
this the file must be re-opened.

4.5. GPS coordinates and maps
If the GPS is used, IRIMETER-2 saves the coordinates of every IRI measurement. As
IRI is saved with 5 meter interval, the GPS coordinates will also be saved with the
same 5 meter interval. GPS coordinates can be written into the measurement report.
The included software also allows to create maps of the measurements.
After data with GPS coordinates is opened in the computer software, a tab named
“GPS” is available in the test results window.
In order to draw or renew the map press the button “Refresh map”. The route of the
test is shown as a black line if the default settings are used.

It is possible to save the map as an .html file that can be viewed with most web
browsers. To do that, press button “Save map” and enter the name and location of the
file.
The user can also save the map as a .kml file that can be opened with Google Earth.
Press the button “Create .kml” and enter the name and location of the file.
26
A test with GPS coordinates can be divided into line segments with equal lengths and
color the lines according to IRI values. For example, this could be used to show parts
of the road that have higher IRI.
To create these colored lines onto the map, follow the next steps:
1. Set the length of a line segments or the number of segments.
If the segment length is entered, the software will automatically
calculate the number of segments for the test.
If number of segments is entered, the software will automatically
calculate the length of the segment.
The maximum number of segments per test is limited 100.
2. Set the data type that is used to set the colors of the lines, for example right
IRI values.
3. Set the number of different colors.
4. Select each color by its number and set its properties:
Change the color by clicking on the colored box.
Set the min/max values for the color.
5. Press “Refresh map” to draw the map with colored lines.
Example:

In the previous example, the color number 1 is set to green and has min/max values of
0.00/1.00. The resulting map has the line colored green if the IRI value for the
segment is higher than 0.00 and lower than 1.00. If the IRI value of the segment is not
included in any color, it is shown as a black line.
A legend with the colors and corresponding min/max values is drawn to the top right
corner of the map.
If the user clicks on the map close to the line, the measurement value of the point or
line segment is shown. Left mouse click shows the value of the single measurement
point along with the distance of that point. Right mouse click shows the value of the
line segment along with the start and end distances of that segment. The segment that
is currently selected is shown on the map with a thicker line.

It is possible to include the GPS coordinates into the measurement report. When
creating a report, mark a tick before the text “Coordinates” when choosing data types
for the report. In the Excel file the user can click on the coordinate to see the location
of the measuring point on the map.
29
4.6. Exporting csv files

30
The format of the csv file is defined in a text box that can be modified by the
user.
The main rules that must be followed are:
1. The data row must be the last line of the format.
2. Each data definition must be enclosed between “$” signs.
3. Data definitions must match one of the values from the drop-down lists (see
picture below).

To load a csv format:
1. Select a format from the Saved formats drop-down list.
2. Click Load button.
Two example csv formats are included with the program that can be used as a
template to create new formats.
32
4.7. Resolving problems during the export of reports
The Excel report table is not being composed when ordered, if the macro security
level is too high.
Solution (Excel 2000, 2003): To set macro security level to Medium. For this select
from menu bar: Tools > Macro > Security > Security Level and select Medium level.
MS Excel 2003 is proposing four security levels. The High level can also be selected
and in Excel restart enable certificate added into Excel workbook.

The “Calibration” tab is not visible to a normal user (see additional instructions in
separate document to access and use calibration menu). This section should be only
used by the person who is calibrating or servicing the measuring system.
The “Calibration” tab is meant for calibration of the measuring system IRIMETER-2
according to the vehicle and comparison tests made with the help of a reference
device (see section 5).
Correction of IRI measurements:
o by means of a calibration coefficients,
Calibration identification code
Attention! Calibration identification code along with the unique serial number link
the measuring system IRIMETER-2 with its calibration certificate. Calibration is not
valid, if the code displayed here does not match the one on the certificate.
38
5. Calibration of the measuring system
Attention! Calibration settings are not visible to a normal user (see additional
instructions in separate document to access and use calibration menu).
The measuring system does not set any limits for the use of the vehicle but it should
be calibrated once per year or when the parameters of the vehicle are changed. Before
calibration of the measuring system the vehicle has to be prepared as follows:
the front axle of the vehicle must be lash-free;
the front and rear summer tyres of the vehicle must not be very worn, so that
they will last the entire season;
if possible, there should be a spare tyre/spare tyres of the same brand as the
tyres mounted on the vehicle;
an excessive ballast not in the vehicle during the normal use thereof must be
removed for the time of calibration.
It is not recommended to carry out measurements during winter, when vehicles are
equipped with winter tyres and due to ice and snow on the roads it is not possible
either.
