Organized by At Sponsored by
The aim of the conference is to provide a platform for Academicians, Research scholars, Practicing
Engineers and Students, working in the area of Geotechnical Engineering and Concrete technology to
interact and share their experience and knowledge. This conference provides an opportunity for the
delegates to exchange new ideas and application experiences face to face, to establish business or
research relations and to find partners for future collaboration.
There will be a Symposium on Laterites and other Tropical Soils on 1st December 2021 by the
Technical Committee TC 107 of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical
Engineering. Laterite is a soil and rock type rich in iron and aluminium, and is commonly considered
to have formed in hot and wet tropical areas. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration, because of
high iron oxide content. They develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent
rock. Tropical weathering (laterization) is a prolonged process of chemical weathering which
produces a wide variety in the thickness, grade, chemistry and ore mineralogy of the resulting soils.
The majority of the land area containing laterites is between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
Historically, laterite was cut into brick-like shapes and used in monument-building. After 1000 CE,
construction at Angkor Wat and other southeast Asian sites changed to rectangular temple enclosures
made of laterite, brick and stone. Since the mid-1970s, some trial sections of bituminous-surfaced,
low-volume roads have used laterite in place of stone as a base course. Thick laterite layers are porous
and slightly permeable, so the layers can function as aquifers in rural areas.
Theme
LBS Institute of Technology for Women, established in the year 2001 is the first Engineering College
for Women in the state of Kerala. LBSITW is managed by LBS Centre for Science and Technology, a
premier Research and Consultancy organization under the Government of Kerala. During the Twenty
years of existence, it has achieved excellence in imparting technical education for women. At present,
the College offers five undergraduate programs (B.Tech) in Electronics and Communication
Engineering, Applied Electronics and Instrumentation, Computer Science and Engineering,
Information Technology and Civil Engineering and two post graduate programs (M.Tech) in Signal
Processing and Computer Science and Engineering.
B.Tech Programme in Civil Engineering was introduced in the Institution in 2012. Since inception,
the Department of Civil Engineering is actively engaged in grooming a large pool of students into
well trained engineers. The Department keeps pace with the advances in technology by engaging in
research and consultancy works in the various emerging areas of Civil Engineering
