Assignment Problems

1. Calculate the energy for vacancy formation in silver, given that the equilibrium number of
vacancies at 800 °C (1073 K) is 3.6 x 1023 m3. The atomic weight and density (at 800 C) for
silver are, respectively, 107.9 g/mol and 9.5 g/cm3.

2. What is the composition, in atom percent, of an alloy that consists of 5.5 wt% Pb and
94.5 wt% Sn?

3. Calculate the unit cell edge length for an 80 wt% Ag-20 wt% Pd alloy. All of the palladium
is in solid solution, the crystal structure for this alloy is FCC, and the room temperature
density of Pd is 12.02 g/cm3. The atomic weights for Ag and Pd are 107.9 and 106.4
g/mol, respectively , whereas the densities for the Ag and Pd are 10.49 g/cm3 (inside
front cover) and 12.02 g/cm3.

4. Some hypothetical alloy is composed of 25 wt% of metal A and 75 wt% of metal B.If the
densities of metals A and B are 6.17 and 8.00 g/cm3, respectively, whereas their
respective atomic weights are 171.3 and 162.0 g/mol, determine whether the crystal
structure for this alloy is simple cubic, face-centered cubic, or body-centered cubic.
Assume a unit cell edge length of 0.332 nm.

5. To provide some perspective on the dimensions of atomic defects, consider a metal

specimen that has a dislocation density of 105 mm-2 . Suppose that all the dislocations in
1000 mm3 were somehow removed and linked end to end. How far (in miles) would this
chain extend? Now suppose that the density is increased to 109 mm-2 by cold working.
What would be the chain length of dislocations in 1000 mm3 of material?

6. A single crystal of zinc is oriented for a tensile test such that its slip plane normal makes
an angle of 65 ° with the tensile axis.Three possible slip directions make angles of 30°,
48°, 78° with the same tensile axis. (a) Which of these three slip directions is most
favored? (b) If plastic deformation begins at a tensile stress of 2.5 MPa (355 psi),
determine the critical resolved shear stress for zinc.

7. Two previously undeformed cylindrical specimens of an alloy are to be strain hardened

by reducing their cross-sectional areas (while maintaining their circular cross sections).
For one specimen, the initial and deformed radii are 15 mm and 12 mm, respectively. The
second specimen, with an initial radius of 11 mm, must have the same deformed
hardness as the first specimen; compute the second specimen’s radius after deformation.
