Supplementary Grammar

Your English as a beginner, you may ask:

. What’s your name?
. Where do you come from?
But to be more polite and gentle, sometimes we want to use a question as part of another
question or a statement. This is called an embedded question.
. Could you tell me what you name is?
. I wonder where you come from?
It is different from other types of questions because:
- There must not be any auxiliary verb between the question word and the subject.
- If the embedded question is not part of another question then there’s no need to use a
question mark at the end of that sentence.
Sentences that include embedded question usually begins with common introductory phrases
like:

o Could you tell me

o I’d like to know
o I’m not sure
o Do you know
o I wonder
o Would you mind
Use “if” to begin an embedded yes/no question:

Have you gone to China recently? I’d like to know if you have gone to China recently.

Do you like my nail honey? I wonder if you like my nail honey.

Use a question word to begin an embedded information question:
