• Archeologists tell us that dogs, descended from wolves over 10,000 years ago, were the first animals to be
domesticated by humans. Like their feline cousins, dogs are social animals, which might explain why they
have had such a close relationship with humans for so long.

• Throughout history, dozens of dog breeds developed in different parts of the world. Each breed had
different characteristics, so it was trained for a specific use. One way that human beings have used dogs is

• Three species classified as herding Dogs are the golden retriever, the Labrador retriever, and the beagle.

German shepherd.

classifications: hounds, toy dogs, working dogs, terriers, and non-sporting dogs.
