 BIODATA

William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955) is an American business magnate,
software developer, investor, author, and philanthropist. He is a co-founder of Microsoft,
along with his late childhood friend Paul Allen. During his career at Microsoft, Gates
held the positions of chairman, chief executive officer (CEO), president and chief
software architect, while also being the largest individual shareholder until May 2014.
He was a major entrepreneur of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s.
Gates grew up in Seattle, Washington, where he was born and reared. In Albuquerque,
New Mexico, he and Allen started Microsoft in 1975. It grew to become the world's
largest software company for personal computers. When Steve Ballmer took over as
CEO in January 2000, Gates stepped aside as chairman and CEO, but he remained
chairman of the board of directors and became chief software architect. He was
chastised in the late 1990s for his business techniques, which were deemed anti-
competitive. Numerous court judgements have supported this viewpoint. In June 2008,
Gates switched from a full-time job at Microsoft to a part-time job at the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, which he and his then-wife, Melinda Gates, created in 2000. In
February 2014, he stood down as chairman of the board of Microsoft and took on a new
role as technology adviser to assist newly appointed CEO Satya Nadella.Gates stepped
down from the boards of Microsoft and Berkshire Hathaway in March 2020 to focus on
his charitable endeavours, which include climate change, global health and
development, and education.
Gates has been on Forbes' list of the world's wealthiest people since 1987. With the
exception of 2010 and 2013, he was the richest person in the world every year from
1995 to 2017. In October 2017, he was eclipsed by Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of
Amazon, who had an estimated net worth of US$90.6 billion at the time, compared to
Gates' US$89.9 billion. Gates had a net worth of US$135 billion as of December 2021,
making him the world's fourth richest person.
Gates has explored a number of corporate and philanthropic activities since leaving
Microsoft's day-to-day operations in 2008. He is the founder and chairman of BEN,
Cascade Investment, bgC3, and TerraPower, among others. Through the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, the world's largest private foundation, he has provided huge sums of
money to many humanitarian organisations and scientific research programmes. He
spearheaded a vaccination programme in the early twenty-first century through the
foundation that largely helped to the eradication of the wild poliovirus in Africa. Gates
and Warren Buffett created The Giving Pledge in 2010, pledging to devote at least half
of their wealth to philanthropy along with other billionaires.
 CONSIDERATION
Bill Gates adopts a participatory leadership style. Participatory leadership style is a
leadership style that gives full confidence to its employees to be active in conveying
input, suggestions or other things. Of course, this leadership style is only carried out by
leaders who have a high sense of trust in their employees.
He did this, because according to him, being participatory could pave the way for
employees to play an active role, when employees are able to play an active role, of
course, the employee can provide input. So that the input is used as material for the
development of a company. With input from his employees, Bill Gate believes that the
company will continue to grow when it gets input from its employees.
With this participatory leadership style, it builds creativity and ideas for its employees.
Because of the ideas or creativity of these employees who will provide changes or
developments for Microsoft. Of course, using this participatory leadership style requires
great trust because the participatory leadership style focuses on how employees can
have or build ideas. When leaders do not have a sense of trust in their employees, this
participatory leadership style cannot work well. Therefore, the trust and encouragement
of a leader is very important for the sustainability and success and the achievement of
company goals.
 INITIATING STRUCTURE
Bill Gates regularly meets and has discussions with chief managers as well as company
program managers. He has aggressively expanded the marketing opportunities of
Microsoft products and grown the company to become known as a software giant.

In addition, the biggest secret of Bill Gates' success in developing Microsoft was to
introduce the concept of "Think Week." He will take a week each year to read
research papers conducted by Microsoft Company employees as well as investors.

Through his reading, Bill Gates will think about the products that will find the market
and what will happen in the future. He spent this Think Week in a secret area in a
place that is an area rich in nature. Bill Gates will go to the place by helicopter. The
average reading done by Bill Gates is for 18 hours in a day while going through this
Think Week process. This meant he read from early in the morning until late the
next morning to develop his business idea.

During that period, he did not allow anyone to see him including his own family
members. This is because he wants to focus. Among the great successes enjoyed
by Bill Gates through this Think Week was to successfully create a product called
Internet Explorer in 1995. In addition, in 2005 Bill Gates has already read a
research paper entitled Virtual Earth which is a map like Waze now which shows
traffic flow and directions directly to users.
