Minimum Energy Performance Calculator

LEED v4 EA Prerequisite Minimum Energy Performance and EA Credit Optimize Energy Performance

June 1, 2017

INSTRUCTIONS:
Complete this calculator to document the LEED Minimum Energy Performance prerequisite when using ASHRAE
90.1-2010 or a LEED approved alternative energy standard).

Note: This calculator shall be used for any LEED 2009 project using the ASHRAE 90.1-2010 pathway (via LEED
Interpretation #10421.

Step 1.
Enable macros.
Note: This calculator is for use with Excel for Mac 2011 and Excel 2007 or later.

Step 2.
Complete all sheets.

Complete the General Info tab before completing any other tabs, since this will show or hide rating system
specific information, and other project-specific information.

If the project has multiple buildings, complete the Multiple Buildings Details tab second.

Then continue by filling out all additional tabs.

These sheets are intended to assist energy modelers in developing the ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G building
energy models. The inputs include specific information about the baseline and proposed ASHRAE 90.1-2010
Appendix G modeling requirements, and provide the energy modeler with quality control checks for the energy
modeling inputs and outputs. These sheets provide the greatest value to the project team if they are completed
during the design process, with involvement from the building owner, architect(s), and engineer(s). Prior to LEED
submission, the energy modeler should confirm that the energy model inputs listed are consistent with those
modeled, and provide quality control (QC) to confirm that the outputs are reasonable based on the energy inputs
listed.

Note: If the energy modeler and project team waits to fill out the spreadsheet until near the completion of the
building design, the team may discover some ASHRAE 90.1 mandatory requirements that have been overlooked,
modeling requirements that have not been addressed, and additional time may be required to revise the model
and show compliance.

Step 3.
Upload the completed spreadsheet to LEED Online in Excel (*.xlsm) format. Complete any related summary
fields in the LEED prerequisite form and provide all additional required uploads along with the results of the
calculator
Note: For LEED 2009 projects using ASHRAE 90.1-2010 via LEED Interpretation #10421, provide the following sections of the
LEED prerequisite form:

1. Target Finder.
2. Check the additional details checkbox: "The project team is using an alternative compliance approach..."
3. For the "Alternative Compliance Path" narrative, reference LEED Interpretation #10421.
4. For the "Alternative Compliance Path" uploads, provide:
a. The ASHRAE 90.1-2010 Mandatory measures checklist, or a document confirming compliance with all
mandatory measures of ASHRAE 90.1-2010 or LEED approved alternative standard.
b. This completed spreadsheet in Excel (*.xlsm) format.
c. Upload of Target Finder results.
d. Upload of the following energy simulation reports for the proposed and 0 degree baseline buildings.

(3) Sample inputs at the thermal zone, system, and plant level (as applicable) for each system type, including
the cooling, heating, fans, controls, outside air, and service water heating system
(4) Inputs for the utility tariffs, if there is a variance of at least 10% between the baseline and proposed virtual
rates, or if the percentage consumption savings for each non-electric utility varies by more than 5% from the
percentage consumption savings for the electric utility.
(5) Output summary report of energy consumption by end use and fuel source
(6) Output summary report of total energy consumption and cost by fuel source

All proposed HVAC systems and related parameters, such as equipment capacities, efficiencies, airflows, fans,
Yes
G etc. have been modeled as designed and are consistent with supporting documentation.

Each proposed HVAC thermal zone has been modeled as a separate thermal block except as allowed by Table
Yes
G G3.1#7.

All proposed HVAC systems serving conditioned spaces have been modeled with heating and cooling as
required by Table G3.1#1(b), with heating and/or cooling added as necessary identically to the baseline per Yes
G Table G3.1#10(c&d) except where System types (9) or (10) have been modeled.

All proposed HVAC systems and related parameters can be modeled directly in the energy simulation program
Yes
G used.

All proposed fan part-load efficiency curves for variable volume fans have been modeled identically to the
baseline curves for variable volume fans (if not, provide a description of the fan curves used in the space at the Yes
bottom of this table, and confirm that the proposed curves are representative of the actual building design).

G thermodynamically similar floors per G3.1.1.

All baseline heating and ventilation systems have been modeled with an HVAC system per floor or one system
G per group of thermodynamically similar floors per G3.1.1.

All applicable baseline exceptions to G3.1.1 have been implemented. Note that these exceptions are required,
Yes
G not optional.

Where baseline or proposed efficiency ratings for DX cooling equipment, such as EER and COP, include fan
energy, the descriptor is broken down into its components so that supply fan energy can be modeled separately No

Demand control ventilation is modeled in the baseline case for all spaces larger than 500 sq ft (50 sq m) that
have a design occupancy for ventilation of greater than 40 people per 1,000 sq ft (100 sq m) of floor area (except
for spaces served by baseline systems that do not have one of the following: an air-side economizer, automatic N/A
modulating control of the outdoor air damper, or a design outdoor airflow of greater than 3,000 cfm (1,400 L/s))
G per G3.1.2.6 / 6.4.3.9.

Per Section G3.1.2.6, the minimum baseline outdoor air ventilation rates are modeled using ASHRAE 62.1
minimum outside air volume or the minimum outside air volume required by local code. The proposed outdoor air
ventilation rates are modeled as designed. The baseline outside air volume (equal to the sum of the baseline
outside air volume per system) does not exceed the proposed outside air volume (equal to the sum of the
outside air volume per system) except using schedule variations for spaces where demand control ventilation
