Course description: The course is concerned about the role of computers in modern
manufacturing processes. It deals with computer aided design and manufacturing,
geometric modeling, programming languages for NC machines programming, Computer
Aided Process Planning, Industrial Automation. Group technology, cellular
manufacturing and flexible manufacturing systems and their design considerations are
also part of this course.
Course Objectives
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
Acquire knowledge about the use of computer in manufacturing;
Develop language for computer numerical controlling process in manufacturing;
Develop models using CAD/CAM.
Develop flexible manufacturing systems in production process;
Develop Computer network and communication in manufacturing;
Apply CAD/CAM in designing components for manufacturing;
Design industrial automation system
Course Content
1. Introduction and Overview of CAD/CAM/CIM;
Evolution of Computer Integrated Manufacturing, CIM Hardware and CIM Software,
Nature and Role of the elements of CIM system, Development of CIM,
CAM, CAD/CAM AND CIM, Benefits of CIM, Principles of CIM,

Numerical control (NC), NC modes, NC elements, NC machine tools, structure of


CNC machine tools, features of Machining center, turning center, CNC Part
Programming: fundamentals, manual part programming methods, Computer Aided
Part Programming.
3. Geometric modeling:
Modeling of simple machine parts (Milling and Turning) and generating machine
codes using standard Master CAM - 2018 or other CAM Packages (X5)
4. Group Technology and Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP)
Part family, coding and classification, production flow analysis, advantages and
limitations, Cellular Manufacturing, Computer Aided Processes Planning, Retrieval
type and Generative type.
5. Flexible Manufacturing Systems and Industrial Automation
Introduction to Flexible Manufacturing System, Flexibility and Its Types, FMS and
Its rule in CIM environment, Types of FMS, The principal objectives of FMS,
Control of FMS System, Recent Trends, Introduction to Industrial Automation,
Types of Automation, Advantages of Automation, Automation Strategies,
Automated Guided Vehicles Systems and Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems
6. Operational Control;

Method of Presentation:
Lecture, Seminar, Reading Assignments, Home Reading, and Design Project
Assessment and Grading Method:
Mid Exam, Test and Assignments, Projects/term work, and Final Exam
