Capstone Project

The capstone project provides participants with an opportunity to apply their learnings from the
programme to industry-specific challenges. It is a comprehensive project that participants will work in
groups from conception to completion. At the end of the project, the participants will turn in their work
for consultation with faculty members.

REAL-WORLD CASE STUDIES
Executive Shirts Co. by Janice Hammond & Sylvie Ryckebusch
The Executive Shirt Co. is contemplating a move into custom-made shirts. The company's general
manager has charged two of his managers to develop plans for incorporating the production of custom
shirts into the existing standard shirt manufacturing process. The case introduces the applications of
various operations terminologies, computation of various operations performance measures and its
interpretations in various manufacturing organisations. It also develops approaches to analyse
operations systems for improving the expected performance.

Online Travel Agents in India: Whither Industry Dynamics? by Srinivas Gunta, Anil Kumar,
Angshuman Das & Subramanyam Mithireddy

The case throws up the changes wrought by digital interventions by looking at how traditional business
models get upended even as questions persist about the promise of digital – is it just hype or is there
substance behind the hype? It demonstrates how the presence of aggregators heightens the inability of
firms to possess pricing and power. Also, looking at the differences in the evolutionary trajectories of
the new-age aggregators, the case throws up questions on entrepreneurial mindsets and if first mover
or fast mover advantages accrue in this industry.

Route Planning at an Animal Husbandry Department by Sanjay Choudhari & Saurabh Chandra
The case demonstrates a practical application of supply chain modelling in the area of livestock
management for a group of rural communities in India. An animal husbandry department needs to
ensure timely replenishment of liquid nitrogen to several livestock locations to preserve straws for
artificial insemination. The department wishes to explore a possible route distribution redesign for
cost optimisation. The case explores the uses of the spreadsheet as a decision support tool for
evaluating several options of route redesigns.

Wal-Mart Stores' Discount Operations by Pankaj Ghemawat

Starting with Wal-Mart's major diversification move in the early 1980s in the USA, the case looks at the
steps taken by Wal-Mart till then and how they led to a competitive advantage for the firm in discount
retailing. The case is a demonstration of how strategy evolves from the entire system of activities. It
helps understand how strategy cuts across several functional areas and the essence of strategic
decision-making. It also serves to underline how strategies are made, outlining the trade-offs involved
in the process.

Prof. Choudhari is an Associate Professor in the Operations Management and

Quantitative Techniques area at the Indian Institute of Management Indore. His
research areas include manufacturing strategy, application of optimisation and
simulation in operations, and supply chain management. He has published his works
and cases in the International Journal of Production Research, International Journal of
Operations and Production Management (IJOPM), Construction Innovation, Business
Process Management Journal, Asian Case Research Journal, Asian Journal
Management cases, INFORMS Transactions on Education, and Ivey case publication.

Prof. Srinivas Gunta

Area Chair & Faculty Member,
Strategic Management

Prof. Gunta has been a faculty member in the Strategic Management area at the
Indian Institute of Management Indore since 2010. He is a Fellow of the Indian Institute
of Management Bangalore (equivalent to PhD), where he was a recipient of the Infosys
Fellowship for research in Information Technology for the period 2003-2006. A paper
co-authored by him was selected for the Best Paper Proceedings and nominated for
the Carolyn Dexter Award at the 2008 Annual Academy of Management Conference.
He has also won several best teacher accolades through his career at IIM Indore. He
works in the areas of capability building and knowledge management.

The Post Graduate Certificate in Business Management is intended to help working
