Video 1: 3 Key Conceptual Dimensions of GCED

The title of the first video which talks about the three key conceptual dimensions of
Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is “Learning to live together in peace through
Global Citizenship Education”. This video was created by UNESCO, which can be
accessed from the link URL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuKzq9EDt-0. The
length of the video is 2 minutes and 39 seconds.

This video is presented in animation so that it looks interesting and catches

everyone’s eye, including children. It explains the importance of Global Citizenship
Education (GCED) in a globalized and increasingly interconnected and
interdependent world. The scene where a person who is living in a rural area, able to
connect with people from all around the world by just using a handphone symbolized
that we are now living in a globalized world. People, places and economies are
increasingly interdependent and interconnected.

However, ongoing global issues are affecting all of us because of globalization.

Solutions for global issues require us to think and act beyond the national border, and
this is why GCED is needed. It is mentioned in the video that young generation
nowadays need an education that is relevant to their world, this means that the usual
topics traditionally taught in school which focus solely on theories and concepts are
insufficient. Education should also focus on ways to practice and act upon the theories
and concepts in our daily lives.

This video also introduces the three key conceptual dimensions of GCED. Firstly,
GCED can help us learn to live together in peace by nurturing respect for all and build
a sense of belonging to common humanity based on human rights. This is the socio-
emotional dimension of GCED. Secondly, the cognitive dimension of GCED
empowers learners to think critically, and understand the interconnection as well as
interdependency between the local and the global. The third conceptual dimension of
GCED is behavioral where it motivates learners to engage and assume active roles to
resolve global challenges, and contribute to a more just, tolerant, peaceful and
sustainable world.
From the video, we understand that GCED not only can be delivered in school but
also outside of school as it concerns everybody. For instance, community
associations, authorities, family, and the media can be a platform to deliver GCED.
Education fosters global citizenship when students learn about global issues and their
impacts on communities, when they are given the opportunities to learn from each
other and taught to respect each other differences in opinion. Besides, teachers play a
vital role as GCED is most effective when teachers engage in participatory
approaches to learning and are equipped with appropriate teaching materials.

At the end of the video, it concludes that GCED is most likely to succeed when
everyone feels respected as a human being, and is encouraged to participate in school
life. We can all be global citizens through the fostering of GCED. In my opinion, this
video conveys the idea of GCED in a very simple and straightforward manner, so that
everyone can easily understand the concepts of GCED. Furthermore, the animation
presentation in the video also attracts viewer’s interest to know more about GCED.
