CONCEPT PAPER

TITLE: EFFECTS OF PEER PRESSURE ON THE HABIT-FORMING BEHAVIOR

OF HONOR STUDENTS IN GRADE 12 ABM OF LAGRO HIGH SCHOOL

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:

Peer pressure is the influence employed by people within the same social group or

status. Also, it is the term used to describe the effect this influence has on a person to

observe to be accepted by the group that the child is in. Participation in peers plays a

significant role in the development of a child, especially in adolescence. Its influence

starts at an early age and continues to increase in the teenage years. Through puberty,

there are many changes in a child’s physical and cognitive health that peer pressure may

affect many things in a human's life like its academic performance or his/her habits in

behaviors.

Moreover, peer pressure may influence the child’s mind to form a habit.

According to a study by Gina Tomé, Margarid Gaspar de Matos, Ph.D., Celeste Simões,

Ph.D., Inês Camacho, Ph.D., and José AlvesDiniz, Ph.D., they stated that children may

incur behavioral problems throughout its life journey, particularly external problems such

as violent behaviors or substance use by their peers but their peers also, can be a model of

encouragement and an appropriate setting for a child to nurture. Since it's human nature

to gain acceptance by the environment it is in, peer pressure is a big factor in the shaping

of the children because it favors the society that the children are in.

Furthermore, behaviors that are generated from peer pressure may be positive or

negative depending on the behavioral background, nature, and social environment of the
child. Behaviors caused by peer pressure can simply be having the same fashion style,

listening to the same music, or working harder at school. But it can also be taking part in

smoking and drinking habits.

In this quantitative study, the researchers aim to know the effect of peer pressure

in the habit-forming behavior of Honor students of the ABM Strand in Lagro High

School. They aim to perceive the result of peer pressure on its effect on the behaviors of

the students, since it is prominent to influence children, especially at the school wherein

many other kids in the same age bracket may affect their take in their behavioral habits.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

In this study, our independent variable (IV) is the Peer pressure. The researcher

aims to know the effects of Peer pressure on the Academic performance of the Students

(DV) and on the Habit-forming Behavior of Honor Students in Grade 12 ABM of Lagro

High School (DV).

METHOD

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research design used in study was quantitative research study. The study

aimed at collecting information from a sample of students on the Effects of Peer Pressure

on the Habit-forming Behavior of Honor Students in Grade 12 ABM of Lagro High

School. This design is appropriate for fact finding as it captures varied views and

opinions held by students at a given time. It also allows the researchers for generalization

of research findings from the sample.

INSTRUMENTS OF THE STUDY

This study will use a descriptive survey method to assess the academic

performance of Grade 12 ABM honor students of Lagro High School in terms of general

average, attendance, and class participation and the effects of peer pressure on habit-

forming behavior of the students. It will also contain the factors on how the students

usually cope with peer pressure.

RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The study's target population was grade 12 ABM Senior High School honor

students at Lagro High School, who have a high likelihood of experiencing peer pressure

from their environment, which the researchers believe will have a significant impact on

their performance as honor students. It may help the student assess the factors that are

affecting their academic performance as an honor student. In addition to this, it will give
the researchers more data to work with respect to the said topic. Students are the main

target for the study and need to be studied.

The study's sample population consisted of 50 honor students from the Grade 12

ABM batch 2021-2022. This sample size was set to allow the researcher to handle them

and to avoid a superficial viewpoint on the researcher's part. The following information

will be gathered using online survey questionnaires that have been developed and

validated, as well as some personal online interviews done by the researchers.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researchers will send an online survey through the web-based app Google

Forms. The time period for participants to complete the survey is at least 2 days. The

survey will be sent to Grade 12 ABM students of Lagro High School. A link will be sent

to each participant containing an invitation to take part in the study. The survey addressed

the reason for conducting the study, a statement of consent illustrating confidentiality and

that the survey was voluntary.

ANALYSIS OF DATA

The following sample questions were asked:
