PART – A
(Compulsory Question)

1 Answer the following: (10 X 02 = 20 Marks)
(a) Write the assumptions of Fourier’s law of heat conduction.
(b) How the thermal conductivity of a material defined?
(c) List out applications of fin.
(d) Define Biot number.
(e) What are the significance of non dimensional number in heat transfer?
(f) Define the term coefficient of thermal expansion.
(g) List out various boiling regimes.
(h) Draw the temperature distribution curve of counter flow heat exchanger.
(i) Define emissivity.
(j) What is the use of radiation shields?

PART – B
(Answer all five units, 5 X 10 = 50 Marks)
UNIT – I
2 (a) Discuss the briefly factors affecting thermal conductivity.
(b) A mild steel tank of wall thickness 12 mm contains water at 950C. The thermal conductivity of mild
steel is 50 W/m 0C and the heat transfer coefficients for the inside and outside the tank are
2850 and 10 W/m2 0C respectively. If the atmospheric temperature is 150C. Calculate: (i) The rate of
heat loss per m2 of the tank surface area (ii) The temperature of the outside surface of the tank.
OR
3 (a) A long hollow cylinder has inner and outer radii 50 mm and 150 mm respectively. If generates heat
at a rate of 1 kW/m3 (K = 0.5 W/m0C) It the maximum temperature occurs at radius of 100 mm and
temperature of outer surface is 500C. Find: (i) Temperature at inner surface. (ii) Maximum
temperature in the cylinder.
(b) Derive an equation of critical thickness of insulation for cylinder system.
UNIT – II

4 (a) A temperature rise of 60 C in a circular shaft of 60 mm diameter is caused by the amount of heat
generated due to friction in the bearing mounted on the crankshaft. The thermal conductivity of the
shaft material is 50 W/m0C and the heat transfer coefficient is 6.5 W/m2 0C, calculate:
(i) Develop an expression for the temperature distribution and determine amount of heat transferred
through the shaft.
(b) Discuss the application of errors in temperature measurement in a system.
OR
5 (a) Derive the equation of lumped heat capacity parameter analysis.
(b) A steel ball 100 mm in diameter and initially at 9000C is placed in air at 300C. Find:
(i) Temperature of the ball after 30 seconds and the rate of cooling (0C/min) after 30 seconds take
h = 20 W/m2 0C, k = 40 W/m0C, density = 7800 kg/m3, specific heat = 460 J/kg0C.

UNIT – III
6 (a) Find an expression for the drag force on smooth sphere of diameter D, moving with a uniform
velocity V in a fluid density and dynamic viscosity.
(b) Air at 200C and 1.013 bar flows over a flat plate at 40 m/s, the plate is 1 m long and is maintained at
600C. Assuming unit depth, calculate the heat transfer from the plate.
OR
7 (a) Discuss the fully developed flow with suitable sketch.
(b) Calculate the heat transfer from a 60 W incandescent bulb at 1150C to ambient air at 250C. Assume
the bulb as a sphere of 50 mm diameter also find percentage of power lost by free convention.
UNIT – IV
8 (a) Discuss the briefly Nussle’s theory of film wise condensation on a vertical plate with suitable sketch.
(b) Vertical flat plate in the form of fin is 600 m in height and is exposed to stem at atmospheric
pressure. If surface of the plate is maintained at 600C, calculate the following: (i) The film thickness
at the trailing edge of the film and the overall heat transfer coefficient.
OR
9 (a) Derive expression for effectiveness by NTU in the parallel flow heat exchanger.
(b) Water enters a counter flow double pipe heat exchanger at 380C flowing at 0.076 kg/s. It is heated
by oil specific heat 1880 J/kg0C flowing at the rate of 0.152 kg/s from an inlet temperature of 1160C.
For an area of 1 m2 and overall heat transfer coefficient 340 W/m20C, determine the total heat
transfer rate.
UNIT – V
10 (a) Discuss the intensity of radiation and Lamberts Cosine law.
(b) Calculate the following for an industrial furnace in the form of a black body and emitting radiation at
25000C. (i) Maximum emissive power and wavelength at which the emission is maximum.
OR
11 (a) Discuss with sketch of electrical network analogy for the thermal radiation system.
(b) The large parallel planes with emissivities 0.3 and 0.8 exchange heat. Find the percentage
reduction when a polished aluminium shield of emissivity 0.04 is placed between them use the
method of electrical analogy.
