Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 38 to 44.
The influenza virus is a single molecule (phân tử)composed of millions of individual
atoms. Although bacteria can be considered a type of plant, secreting poisonous substances
into the body of the organism they attack, viruses, like the influenza virus, are living
organisms themselves. We may consider them regular chemical molecules since they have
strictly defined atomic structure; but on the other hand, we must consider them as being alive
since they are able to multiply in unlimited quantities.
An attack brought on by the presence of the influenza virus in the body produces a
temporary immunity(mien dich), but, unfortunately, the protection is against only the type of
virus that caused the influenza. Because the disease can be produced by any one of three
types, referred to as A, B, or C, and many strains within each type, immunity to one virus will
not prevent infection by another type or strain.
Approximately every ten years, worldwide epidemics of influenza called pandemics
occur. Thought to be caused by new strains of type-A virus, these pandemic viruses have
spread rapidly, inflecting millions of people. Epidemics or regional outbreaks have appeared
on the average every two or three years or type-A virus, and every four or five years for type-
B virus.
Question 38: With what topic is the passage primarily concerned?
A. immunity to disease B. the influenza virus C. chemical molecules D. bacteria
Question 39: According to this passage, bacteria are……………
A. poisons B. larger than viruses C. very small D. plants
Question 40: The word “unlimited” could be best replaced by which of the following?
A. very small B. very large C. very similar D. very

Question 41: Why does the writer say that viruses are alive?
A. they need warmth and light B. they multiply
C. they move D. they have a complex atomic struture
Question 42: The atomic structure of viruses…………….
A. is variable B. is more complex than that of
bacteria.
C. cannot e analyzed chemically D. is strictly defined
Question 43: How does the body react to the influenza virus?
A. After a temporary immunity, it becomes even more susceptible to the type and strain
that caused the influenza.
B. It prevents further infection to other types and strains of the virus.
C. It produces immunity to the type and strain of virus that invaded it.
D. It becomes immune to types A, B, and C viruses, but not to various strains within the
types.
Question 44: The author names all of the following as characteristics of pandemics
EXCEPT
A. they are regional outbreaks. B. they spread very quickly.
C. they are caused by type-A virus. D. they occur once every ten years.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 45 to 50 .
Life on Earth is in the throes of (vat lộn) new wave of mass extinction, unlike anything
since the demise(chết) of the dinosaurs. In the last 500 years, 844 species are known to have
died out, and up to 16,000 others are now known to be threatened. Conservationists argue that
humans have an ethical obligation to protect other species. Diversity and natural beauty are
highly prized by mankind, and that biodiversity is a vital resource: we rely on ecosystems to
provide food, oxygen and natural resources, recycle waste and fertilize soil for agriculture.
The total value of services provided to man by nature has been estimated at $33 trillion
annually. Plants and animals are also an essential source of new foods and medicines
worldwide. Preserving species could help protect us from disease.
Natural disasters and processes were behind the five major mass extinctions in geological
history, but the current "sixth extinction" is being caused by the success of one species-
humans. The six billion (and counting) people crowding the Earth, are driving out
biodiversity in a variety of ways. Humans began to destroy ecosystems a major way about
10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture.
But within the last 100,000 years, the hunting and burning practices of people, along with
climate change, drove many large mammals to extinction. However, the most common
reason for extinction is habitat loss. Ecosystems from wetlands to prairies and rain forests to
coral reefs are being cleared or degraded for crops, cattle, roads and development. Even
fragmenting habitats with roads or dams can make them more vulnerable.
