A-4) Target Mean Strength
f’ck = f ck + 1.65 X S
or
f’ck = fck + X
whichever is higher
Where f’ck = Target mean compressive strength at 28 days
f ck = Characteristic compressive strength at 28 days S = Standard deviation
X = factor based on grade of concrete
From Table – 2, standard deviation S = 5.0
From Table -1, X = 6.5.
Therefore target strength using both equations, that is,
a) f’ck = 45 + 1.65 X 5 = 53.25 N/mm2
b) f’ck = 45 + 6.5 = 51.5 N/mm2
Target Mean strength as per Table 1700 - 5 of MoRTH : 58 N/mm2
The higher value is to be adopted. Therefore target strength will be 58 N/mm 2 as 58 N/mm2 > 53.25 N/mm2
A-5) Approximate Air Content
From Table 3 of IS: 10262, the approximate amount of entrapped air to be expected in normal (non-air- entrained) concrete is 1
A-6) Selection of (Free) Water - Cement Ratio
From Fig. 1, the free water cement ratio required for the target strength of 58 N/mm 2 is 0.33 for OPC 53 grade curve. (For OPC
Based on trials, adopted water cement ratio as 0.33
0.33 < 0.45, hence O.K.

A-7) Selection of Water content
From Table 2, maximum water content for 20mm aggregate=186 liters (for 25mm to 50mm slump range) Estimated water cont
As Super plasticizer is used, water content can be reduced up to 20 Percent and above.
Based on trials with super plasticizer water content reduction of 21 percent has been achieved. Hence the arrived water content=
A-8) Selection of Cement Content
Water / Cement ratio = 0.33
Cementious content 161.7/0.33 = 490 kg/cum
From Table 1700-2 of MoRTH, minimum cement content for moderate exposure condition = 340kg
490 kg > 340 kg, hence, O.K.
A-9) Proportion of Volume of Coarse Aggregate and Fine aggregate
From IS: 10262 Table-3, Approximate Volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregate and fine aggregate Z
In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.33. Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required to be increased to decrease the
0.05 change in water-cement ratio). Therefore, corrected proportion of volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement ratio o
For pumpable concrete these values should be reduced upto 10 percent. Based on trials volume of coarse aggregate taken as = 0
Volume of fine Aggregate = 1-0.60 = 0.40

A-10) Mix Calculations
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows:
a) Volume of Concrete = 1 m3
b) Volume of entrapped in wet concrete = 0.01 m3
c) Volume of cement = (Mass of cement/Specific gravity of cement)X(1/1000)
= (392/3.15)X(1/1000) = 0.124 m3
d) Volume of Fly ash = (Mass of Fly ash/Specific gravity of Fly ash)X(1/1000)
= (98/2.005)X(1/1000) = 0.049 m3
e) Volume of Water = (Mass of water/Specific gravity of water)X(1/1000)
= (161.7/1.00)X(1/1000) = 0.162 m3
f) Volume of Admixture = (Mass of Admixture/Specific gravity of admixture)X(1/1000)
= (3.19/1.07)X(1/1000) = 0.0030 m3

g) Volume of all in Aggregate = {(a-b)-(c+d+e)}

= ((1-0.01)-(0.124+0.049+0.162+0.0030)) = 0.652 m3

h) Mass of Coarse Aggregate 20mm = 0.652 x 0.60 x 0.55 x Specific gravity of 20mm x 1000
= 0.652 x 0.60 x 0.55 x 2.895 x1000 = 623 Kgs

i) Mass of Coarse Aggregate 12mm = 0.652 x 0.60 x 0.45 x Specific gravity of 12mm x 1000
= 0.652 x 0.60 x 0.45 x 2.870 x1000 = 505 Kgs
j) Mass of Crushed stone sand = 0.652 x 0.40 x Specific gravity of sand x 1000
= 0.652 x 0.40 x 2.763 x1000 = 721 Kgs
