HERON’S FORMULA

CLASS IX
CASE STUDY

1
Area of a triangle = 2 x base x height

The above formula is used if the base and height of a triangle are
given.

If it is not possibe to find the height of a triangle, then the formula used is

Where a, b and c are the sides of the triangle

s = semi-perimeter i.e. half of the perimeter of the
𝑎+𝑏+𝑐
triangle = 2

Q. Rohan is renovating the floor of a banquet hall. He is tiling the whole floor with the new
rectangular tiles. A design is made on a rectangular tile of dimensions 70 cm X 50 cm as
shown in the figure. The design shows 8 triangles, each of sides 26 cm, 17 cm and 25 cm.

a) Find the total area of the design.

(i) 1632 cm²
(ii) 1538 cm²
(iii) 1423 cm²
(iv) 1548 cm²

b) Find the remaining area of the tile

(i) 1886 cm²
(ii) 1868 cm²
(iii) 1632 cm²
(iv) 1648 cm²

c) Find the cost of painting the design at the rate of ₹2 per cm²
(i) ₹3264
(ii) ₹3076
(iii) ₹2846
(iv) ₹3096

d) If the triangles in the design are isosceles right triangles with length of the hypotenuse
16√2 cm. Then the length of each of the equal sides is
(i) 16√3 cm
(ii) 18 cm
(iii) 17 cm
(iv) 16 cm

e) Find the total area of the design with the above meaurements of the triangles
(i) 1280 cm²
(ii) 1376 cm²
(iii) 1024 cm²
(iv) 1046 cm²
