1.0 Task Outcome

By the end of this task, student should be able to:

2
1.1 Measure of time oscillation and convert into acceleration

2.0 Theory

The Compound Pendulum Apparatus is designed for the experimental

investigation of pendulum oscillation phenomena. It permits comparison of the
oscillations of a thread pendulum (mathematical pendulum) and a rigid-body
pendulum (physical pendulum). The physical pendulum can be used as rod
pendulum with variable suspension point and adjustable additional bob; with the
thread pendulum the length of the pendulum can be altered.

The simplest type of pendulum is the mathematical pendulum, which takes the
form of a concentrated mass suspended from a zero-mass thread (thread
pendulum).

Ti15 – period of oscillation for 15 oscillations; i – numerical quantity

4.0 Task :
Complied with the CLO 2: ORGANIZE APPROPRIATELY EXPRIMENTS IN
GROUP ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTION GIVEN. (P4, PLO4)

4.1 Work Procedure

1. Start the experiment with the fixed pendulum length and list down the time
for each 15 oscillation (Table 1).

5.0 Discussions
As can be seen, the time taken for the length of 0.25m is 16.56 seconds for the first
attempt and 21.52 seconds for the second attempt. Meanwhile, the time taken for the
length of 0.50m in first attempt took 16.67 seconds, and the second attempt took 21.24
seconds.

Following that, the sum for 0.25m is 33.23s, and the amount for 0.50m is 42.76s. We get
the acceleration of 0.25m is 0.05 m/s 2 while 0.50m is 0.06 m/s 2by using the formula
ν −υ
α=
τ

6.0 Conclusions
In conclusion, we can see from the experiment that the length of the rope pendulum
affects acceleration, i.e., the longer the length, the higher the pendulum's acceleration.
