Power SCADA History
What is Power SCADA?
• Schneider Electric’s Power Management and Control System software package for real-time
situational awareness

When was Power SCADA introduced and why?

• First introduced in 2009 to address the needs of our largest customers to manage the
increasing numbers of communicating electrical devices in their facilities.

Is Power SCADA a true SCADA?

• Based on Citect SCADA, Power SCADA is a true SCADA (supervisory control and data
acquisition) software offer. Citect SCADA is a proven process automation software package
first introduced to the market in 1991 with now over 1 million copies sold.
Scale your system as your needs evolve
Performant as you scale up

Power SCADA addresses the

increasing size & scale of modern
power systems containing large
numbers of intelligent devices

Q: What is the size of the largest deployment of Power SCADA?

A: 600,000 tags

Q: What is the average size of a Power SCADA installation?

A: 150,000 - 200,000 tags

Q: What is the shortest time Power SCADA could interrogate devices to obtain alarm, real time, and
trend data?
A: Device data acquisition can occur within seconds - it is only limited by the latency of the communications
network and the responsiveness of the devices.

Power Monitoring & Alarming
The power of a SCADA uniquely
• High performant real-time communications
designed for
• Native system redundancy and scalable architecture
Power Management Applications
• Extensive protocol support & open data exchange
• Highly customizable with scripting and an open API
• Cyber resilient networks and servers

Source Control
• Monitor complex auto-transfer schemes
• Remotely and safely control breakers

Avoid Disruption via Events Analysis

• Default, rich data integration for connected devices
(e.g. Masterpact MTZ, ION9000, PM8000, etc.).
Power SCADA Operation enables Facilities teams in Power
Critical Facilities to monitor, control, and troubleshoot issues in • Sequence of Events Recording (SER) (1ms)
real-time with their electrical distribution systems to maximize • Power Quality Waveform Analysis (COMTRADE)
power reliability and operational efficiency.

Scale your system as your needs evolve
Small systems require minimal hardware

Power SCADA has a surprisingly

small ‘hardware’ footprint.

It can be installed and run on an embedded PC like the Schneider Electric Magelis pictured above or even a
tablet such as a Microsoft Surface.

Manually Control Loads
Open/close breakers remotely

Control breakers in real time using

interactive Power graphics.

Operate breakers remotely from a safe

distance from energized equipment to
minimize potential arc-flash risk.
Real-time Situational Awareness
Animated one-line to visualize electrical system status

Quickly understand the state of

your power system

Determine which parts of your

electric network are energized and
from what sources.

See in real time when loads are

shifted as part of control schemes
using PLC’s, relays, etc.
Intelligent one-line animation engine
Technical details: All the logic and development tools you need to digitize your electrical network
Intelligent One-Line Graphics!
• The one-line animation engine
included with Power SCADA has
bus condition logic built-in!
• Not only is the Power SCADA one-
line diagrams faster to setup than
a traditional SCADA, but it
introduces repeatability in
commissioning thereby eliminating
manual engineer error.
Electrical Distribution Automated Fault Detection
System Control using and Re-energization
Power SCADA
1. Automatic and fast fault isolation and power restoration in
case of fault on the MV loop.
2. In the event of a fault on the MV loop, the main MV feeder
breaker will trip.
3. Power System locates the fault using the signals coming
from the protection relays.
4. Power System isolates the fault by opening the respective
breaker or protection relay.
5. Power System closes the previous open point in the
electrical network.
6. Power System closes the MV Feeder Breaker that tripped
earlier.
High-Speed Alarming
Technical details

Alarm capabilities
• Filter, sort and categorize alarms based
on time, severity, equipment, state,
priority, etc. in the software HMI

• Acknowledge from the software HMI

• 8 different alarm severity levels w/

customized colouring possible
* Alarm performance (ie: time between alarm occurring on
device and reflected in software) depends on equipment
communication’s architecture. We recommend Ethernet • Ability to print as alarm occurs
communications for high speed alarm performance.
• PC based alarms w/ millisecond time
stamps based on server time
Power Events Analysis

improvements.
• Showcase energy performance to a broad group
of stakeholders via Energy Kiosk displays.
• Create accountability by allocating costs to
departments or processes
• Avoid Utility penalties and billing discrepancies
