formed?
Imagine a sedimentary rock layer without fossils, can you think of 3-4 reasons that could
explain why no fossils are present?
What is an index fossil and how is it used to identify stratigraphic units?
Index fossils are fossils discovered in stratigraphic units that meet a variety of criteria that
allow us to date the stratigraphic unit rock to a range determined by the animal's evolutionary
and geologic history.
Name three factors that makes a good index fossil.
 Abundant.
 Easily recognizable.
 Have a wide geographic distribution.
In what layer is the extinction event located?
What is the geologic age of the extinction event?
What extinction event is represented in the exercise?
What are possible causes of this extinction event?
How are mass extinctions identified in the fossil record?
How would you determine the difference between a local and global extinction event?
