Hi guys, It’s me Memay. I will be your guide to our lesson about Naming the
specialized structures of terrestrial plants. Are you ready? Great, let’s start!

NAME THAT PLANT

Before we proceed, let’s name some plants found in our community. Using
the number-letter correspondence, decode the plant being described in
each number.

Did you know…

…that plants grow on soil are called Terrestrial Plants? Some terrestrial plants are small,
others are big. There are plants with big trunks while others have small stem. Terrestrial plants
grow in different places. There are plants that grow directly on soil while others grow on rocks.
________________________________________________________________________________________

Plants have different specialized body structures that help them to grow and survive
in their habitats. They use their body structures to acquire from their habitats their basic
needs, such as sunlight, water, air and minerals from the soil.
Leaves are used to capture sunlight, prevent loss or hasten the evaporation of water,
absorb and release air, and protect from animals.

Some plants have few large leaves to capture sunlight or to evaporate water in
areas with abundant moisture. Plants, such as pine and grass, grow small, thin, needle-
like leaves to prevent loss of water. Some plants, like the taro plant and banana, have
waxy, waterproof coating on the surface of their leaves to minimize evaporation of water.
The leaves of some plants, like sugarcane and lemon grass, have long, sharp blades for
protection.

Roots are used to absorb water and minerals from the soil.

Perennial plants like trees and woody shrubs, grow big main roots with branching
roots from all sides to look for water in all directions. Annual plants like vegetables have
thin, small, spreading roots that can easily absorb water and minerals in loam soil.
Orchids that cling to trees have long, hanging roots to absorb moisture in the air.

Stems or trunks are used to store water, transport water and plant nutrients, and
protect plants for being damaged by animals and people.

________________________________________________________________________________________

Terrestrial Plants are plants that live on land. They grow in soil, farms, mountains,
gardens, forests, and in different landforms. They grow in trunk tree, dead logs, and rocks.
Terrestrial plants can be identified according to their characteristics:

TREES
Trees are tall and big plants with hard and thick woody stem called trunk. They grow
more than six feet tall with leaves spread wide to capture sunlight.
Examples: Acacia, Bamboo, Mango, Narra

HERBS
Herbs are small plant having a soft and delicate stem. Though its stem is soft and
delicate, they are strong enough to stand erect on its own.
Examples: oregano, pechay, sunflower, lemon grass
SHRUBS
Shrub are bigger than herbs but smaller than trees. These medium-sized plants with
a hard-woody stem, branching out near the base. Its stem is hard but not very thick compared
to trees.
Examples: rose, santan, calamansi plant
VINES
Some plants have long extended stems that climb on posts and trellis built by farmers.
Examples: grapes, ampalaya, patola, grapes

REMEMBER THESE:

Specialized structures are important to plants in order

to adapt to their environment. Thorns and hairs are some of
the specialized structures of plants. Not all plants have
thorns and hairs.

The water lily leaves have thick and buoyant leaves,

while lotus leaves are flat and broad. Water lilies have wide
flat leaves that help distribute weight over a large area, thus
helping them float.

The hyacinths have long roots so they can reach the

soil under the water.

Kangkong leaves and stems are flexible to move with

water currents. The leaves afloat on water exposing
themselves to sunlight. Nutrients, water and gases are
absorbed through leaves directly from the water. The air
spaces in stems allow them to float. The smaller, feathery
roots are only needed for anchorage and not for absorption
of nutrients. Kangkong may grow in soil that is permanently
saturated with water or always wet.

EVALUATION:
Answer the questions below. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. What plants live in salt water or fresh water?

OBJECTIVE: After doing all the activities in this module the learners are expected to
cite different benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.

➢ YOUR LESSON FOR TODAY:

Cite different benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.

➢ EXPLORE YOUR UNDERSTANDING

The fruits, seeds and vegetables in the picture
provide food that we need in order to live and grow.
Animals use the stored food in plants. Some of the
food is stored in different parts of the plant. Then
people and animals eat these parts of the plant for
health and growth.

You have learned that a plant has several parts.

What plant parts are used for food by people?
PLANT PART OR PARTS THAT CAN BE USED FOR FOOD
Malunggay Leaves
Carrots Roots
Papaya Fruit

You can make a very long list. Many foods come from the different parts of plants like roots,
leaves, stems, flowers, fruits and seeds.

What are some examples of plant products?

Trees are needed for making wooded pencils, paper, furniture, houses, wood carvings, and
many, many more things we need everyday.

➢ FIRM UP YOUR UNDERSTANDING]

• Materials for our furniture and houses mostly come from trees.
• Materials we use to generate heat and power come from plants
• After dying the abaca fibers, they will be made into ropes, bags, shoes, clothing, and many,
many others things.
