Second Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 1
Hi guys, It’s me Memay. I will be your guide to our lesson about Naming the
specialized structures of terrestrial plants. Are you ready? Great, let’s start!
People call this as the “tree of It is known for its bitter taste
life” yet nutritious.

Plants have different specialized body structures that help them to grow and survive
in their habitats. They use their body structures to acquire from their habitats their basic
needs, such as sunlight, water, air and minerals from the soil.
Leaves are used to capture sunlight, prevent loss or hasten the evaporation of water,
absorb and release air, and protect from animals.

Some plants have few large leaves to capture sunlight or to evaporate water in
areas with abundant moisture. Plants, such as pine and grass, grow small, thin, needle-
like leaves to prevent loss of water. Some plants, like the taro plant and banana, have
waxy, waterproof coating on the surface of their leaves to minimize evaporation of water.
The leaves of some plants, like sugarcane and lemon grass, have long, sharp blades for
protection.
Roots are used to absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Perennial plants like trees and woody shrubs, grow big main roots with branching
roots from all sides to look for water in all directions. Annual plants like vegetables have
thin, small, spreading roots that can easily absorb water and minerals in loam soil.
Orchids that cling to trees have long, hanging roots to absorb moisture in the air.
Stems or trunks are used to store water, transport water and plant nutrients, and
protect plants for being damaged by animals and people.
Cactus Bamboo Banana Stalk
Plants have adaptive structures on their flowers, fruits and seeds to enable them to
reproduce their own kind. They have adaptive structures to protect their seeds and to attract
pollinators and agents of seed dispersal.
Papaya Zinnia
All plants have basic body structures that enable them to become the food producer
on Earth. Their adaptive structures in leaves, roots, stem or trunk, fruits, flowers and seeds
enhance their growth and survival in their habitats.

________________________________________________________________________________________
Terrestrial Plants are plants that live on land. They grow in soil, farms, mountains,
gardens, forests, and in different landforms. They grow in trunk tree, dead logs, and rocks.
Terrestrial plants can be identified according to their characteristics:
TREES
Trees are tall and big plants with hard and thick woody stem called trunk. They grow
more than six feet tall with leaves spread wide to capture sunlight.
Examples: Acacia, Bamboo, Mango, Narra
HERBS
Herbs are small plant having a soft and delicate stem. Though its stem is soft and
delicate, they are strong enough to stand erect on its own.
Examples: oregano, pechay, sunflower, lemon grass
SHRUBS
Shrub are bigger than herbs but smaller than trees. These medium-sized plants with
a hard-woody stem, branching out near the base. Its stem is hard but not very thick compared
to trees.
Examples: rose, santan, calamansi plant
VINES
Some plants have long extended stems that climb on posts and trellis built by farmers.
Examples: grapes, ampalaya, patola, grapes

4. Short-sized plant that have a soft but tender stem that are strong enough to stand on
their own.

Presentation:
Since you’ve already known about the terrestrial plants and its characteristic.
This time, let us name the specialized structure of plants that have adapted
to living in aquatic environments either salt water or fresh water, these plants
are called Aquatic plants. They are also referred to as hydrophytes.
Specialized structure is important to plants in order to adapt to their
environment.

Objective:
Hi everyone! My name is teacher Ann. Today’s topic aims to Identify
the characteristics of aquatic plants. Are you ready children? I will be your
guide as you go along with the lessons. Just have fun, learn and enjoy!
Relevant Previous Knowledge: Our topic last time was all about the
specialized structure of aquatic plants. Before going on to the next lesson,
lets answer the following statement with True or False. Are you ready?
TRUE 1. Specialized structures are important to plants in order to adapt to them
_____
environment.
TRUE
______2. Not all plants have thorns and hairs.
FALSE Aquatic plants are plants that grow on dry environment.
______3.
______4.
FALSE The water lily leaves have thick and buoyant leaves while lotus leaves
are flat and broad.
TRUE
______5. Water lily is an example of aquatic plants.
Presentation:
Since you’ve already known about the specialized structure of plants that have
adapted to living in aquatic environments. This time, let us identify the characteristic
of aquatic plants. The characteristics of aquatic plants can vary depending on the
type, but there are a few that remain the same.
While some remain underwater, some of the aquatic plants float above the
surface of freshwater. Their stems and roots allow them to remain firmly affixed despite
strong currents.
Aquatic plants are quite an essential part of the aquatic ecosystem.
They provide oxygen to the animal species living underwater.
They also supply food to some of the species or animals living underwater.

PRACTICE EXERCISE 1
____________________________________________________________
Most species of water lilies have rounded, variously notched, waxy-coated leaves on
long stalks that contain many air spaces and float in quiet freshwater habitats. The
____________________________________________________________
stalks arise from thick, fleshy, creeping underwater stems that are buried in the mud.

MODULE IN SCIENCE 4
Second Quarter/ Week 3 / Day 5
OBJECTIVE: After doing all the activities in this module the learners are expected to
cite different benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.
You can make a very long list. Many foods come from the different parts of plants like roots,
leaves, stems, flowers, fruits and seeds.
• Materials for our furniture and houses mostly come from trees.
• Materials we use to generate heat and power come from plants
• After dying the abaca fibers, they will be made into ropes, bags, shoes, clothing, and many,
many others things.

Exercise 3
Complete the diagram below. Given the benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial and aquatic
plants. Cite different benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants.
P 5. lavender- flower
➢ GENERALIZATION
People produce rubber, oil, medicines, perfume, dyes and textiles from different plant
parts like flowers, barks, leaves. Some parts of plants like the trunks of large trees
(coconut, pine, narra, and mahogany) are sources of timber. They can also be used in
making furniture and household fixtures.

➢ APPLICATION
Aside from the plants that we have learned, there are different plants with specialized
structures. Let us read the following information about terrestrial and aquatic plants.
Your Barangay Captain launched Bantay Ilog Program aimed of saving our aguatic plants. As
a child, how can you help protect our aquatic plants? Express it in different ways.

➢ EVALUATION
Direction: Cite different benefits of specialized structures of terrestrial plants and aquatic plants. Write
your answer in complete sentence on the box provided.
1. rose leaf
2. cactus juice
Cactuses contain vitamins C, E, A, iron, calcium, and
more. This wide range of nutrients and more can help
reduce inflammation in the body. Research found that
taking cactus extract after drinking five to seven
alcoholic drinks resulted in fewer hangover symptoms
(such as nausea, vomiting, or dry mouth).

3. lotus flower
Lotus contains chemicals that decrease swelling, kill cancer cells
and bacteria, reduce blood sugar, help the breakdown of fat, and
protect the heart and blood vessels. Chemicals in lotus also seem
to protect the skin, liver, and brain.
4. water hyacinth
Its purpose is to control and conserve environmental condition. Water
Hyacinth can absorb metals like copper and lead from industrial sewage
and living place sewage. It also can absorb mercury and lead melt in the
liquid. Water Hyacinth can absorb minerals and inorganic substance from
the sewage.
