EARTH SCIENCE
LAS-4 CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS
ACTIVITY 1: ROCK CYCLE IN ACTION

1. The three basic types of rocks are igneous, sedimentary and

metamorphic.

2.

ROCK TYPE FORMATION PROCESS

These are formed from the cooling and

solidification of magma or lava. In the

Igneous
activity the crayons are melted and

cooled.
These are the products of the

lithification or particles produced by the

weathering of other pre-existing rocks

Sedimentary organic materials or minerals that

precipitate from solution. In the

activity the crayons are crushed and

pressed.
These are form when pre-existing or parent

rocks are altered by heat, pressure, and

Metamorphic the chemical activity of fluids. In the

activity the crayons are melted (not

mixed) and placed in water to cool.

3.
ACTIVITY 2: MEETING THE ROCKS

1. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic are the three basic types if

rocks.

2. Sedimentary rocks are produced by lithification or particles

produced by the weathering of other pre-existing rocks (older

igneous, metamorphic or even sedimentary rocks), mineral fragments,

organic materials or minerals that precipitate from solution.

3. Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of

magma or lava.

4. Metamorphic rocks are form when pre-existing or parent rocks

(igneous, sedimentary or even metamorphic) are altered by heat,

pressure, and the chemical activity of fluids.

ACTIVITY 3: A CLOSER LOOK TO ROCKS

1.

Rock
Granular Holes Hardness Buoyancy Reactivity Luster Name Class
No.

1 NO NO 6 SINK NO DULL Gneiss Metamorphic

2 NO YES 6 SINK NO DULL Basalt Igneous

3 YES NO 1 SINK NO DULL Conglomerate Sedimentary

4 NO YES 1 FLOAT NO DULL Pumice Igneous

5 NO NO 5 SINK NO Dull Slate Metamorphic

2. Gneiss – due to its hardness it has many uses as a building

material such as flooring, ornamental stones, gravestones, facing
stones on buildings and work surfaces.
Basalt – basalt fiber has attracted attention as a possible
construction material due to its properties such as high modulus of
elasticity, high elastic strength, corrosion resistance, high-
temperature resistance, extended operating temperature range and
ease of handling.
Conglomerate – This rock can be used as a fill material for roads
and construction. Hard rock may be cut and polished to make
dimension stone.
Pumice – Its natural properties make it inherently environmentally
friendly. It is fire resistant, with excellent sound proofing
qualities and most importantly it is a high insulation material.
Slate - Is a Sustainable Building Material. Slate is a foliated
metamorphic rock and has known to be used since the ancient Roman
era.
3. Rocks are the basic foundation of infrastructures that’s why

identifying different types of rocks is crucial in civil

engineering. Rocks are needed to be classified in order to gain the

knowledge whether the rock is strong, flexible and suitable for

construction.
RFLECTION

1. I learned that there are different ways for a rock to form.

2. I enjoyed most on answering the activities and learning new

knowledges.

3. I want to learn more on of the characteristics of Earth.
